SOUTH POLE | NIGHT IN ANTARCTICA

7 Days in Antarctica (Journey to the South Pole)

Watch this video to see what it’s like to spend 7 Days in Antarctica on my Journey to the South Pole and to travel in Antarctica!

In this Antarctica Travel Vlog, you’ll see what it’s like to fly from Cape Town to Antarctica’s only private jet runway and then spend a week flying around Antarctica’s Queen Maud Land. You’ll see the luxury accommodations provided by White Desert, the incredible airplanes operating in this unforgiving environment.

We’ll fight hurricane force winds and negative 35 degree temperatures in order to visit a spot on the map that’s nearly impossible to reach. Along the way, we’ll see what it’s like to spend a week on the coldest, driest, and windiest continent.

The South Pole is the southernmost point on planet earth and that, in and of itself, is enough for me to want to visit, but there’s more. Fewer than 500 tourists visit each year. Even if everything goes perfectly – which of course it won’t – getting there just isn’t easy.

We'll fly on an Airbus A340 to Antarctica and then onboard a specially modified DC-3 called a Basler as we answer the question can you travel to Antarctica (and beyond)?

Luxury in Antarctica | ECHO, the world's most remote camp (PHENOMENAL!)

Join me on a full tour (in 4K) of Echo, the world's most remote luxury camp in Antarctica. Inspired by astronauts, Echo sits on a massive glacier in quiet solitude encircled by ice-covered rock formations. The futuristic camp is managed by White Desert and can only be reached by private flight.

The video includes the flight to Echo, a full tour of Echo, fine dining in Antarctica, as well as the activities around Echo (e.g. hiking, abseiling, biking, ice climbing and exploring a crevasse). Keep watching tell the end for a fun party in a stunning ice bar!

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory - High-energy physics at the South Pole!

What are neutrinos? How do we detect them and study them? Why is there a giant detector at the South Pole, Antarctica?

Join me on a tour through the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, located at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station, and along the way I'll explain the basics of neutrinos, and follow a neutrino from its creation to its detection at IceCube.

IceCube is supported by the National Science Foundation and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

A Walk at the South Pole - From the Station to Dark Sector POV

This is an uncut point-of-view (POV) recording of the walk from the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station to the Dark Sector Laboratory. Watch me make this nearly 1-kilometer walk in extremely cold weather, right after sunrise!

View is from an action cam in front of my right eye, so you see what I see!

A (little) tour of McMurdo Station, Antarctica - South Pole vlog #4

Well I didn't have much time for filming during my 10-day stopover in McMurdo, but I shot what I could! Here I show the main building, #155, the medical clinic, and various other sites around town. Enjoy!

Getting to McMurdo Station, Antarctica - South Pole vlog #3

After the long quarantine process in San Francisco, and then Christchurch, my cohort finally made it to McMurdo Station. Touchdown in Antarctica, woohoo! Check it off the bucket list.

McMurdo is the base of operations for all other US Antarctic bases and camps. The population in the summer is usually many hundreds, but that was somewhat reduced this year due to COVID. Still, the weather and wildlife were spectacular!

Robert Scott's Discovery Hut - Preserved for 100+ years! - South Pole vlog #5

Before I left McMurdo, I HAD to take a look inside Robert Scott's Discovery hut. Built in 1902, it and its contents remarkably preserved, including seal carcasses and old dog biscuits. Come take a look inside!

Antarctica Condition 1 Weather

Check out the new feature film here:

Filmed at McMurdo Station, where it is relatively sheltered by the surrounding hills. The weather down here is classified as being Condition 3 (nice weather), Condition 2 (not so nice), or Condition 1...

EXTREME FLIGHT - Landing on Antarctica Ice Runway

I boarded a Hi Fly A340 chartered for White Desert Antarctica (Tour Operator) to fly to the seventh continent; Antarctica. The flight time from Cape Town to Wolf’s Fang Runway in Antarctica is 5 hours and 15 minutes. Flying from 33 degrees South to 71 degrees South in latitude. Commander Carlos Mirpuri explained the Antarctic flight operating conditions and requirements.

During the flight, the founder of White Desert Antarctica Patrick explained what to expect in Antarctica. As we flew closer to Antarctica, passengers changed to winter clothing and got ready for the exploration. The Antarctic season is from mid-November to early February every year.

The weather condition was good with clear visibility for landing at Wolf’s Fang runway. The runway friction index was also sufficient to allow the airplane to stop during braking. Our A340 landed at Wolf’s Fang runway (71º 32’ 00” S 8º 50’ 00” E) around 1930 UTC time. I was lucky to observe the Antarctic landing from the jumpseat.

The runway length is 2500 m (8200') long and 60 m (196') wide. Wolf’s Fang Runway is operated by White Desert Antarctica and it’s the only blue ice runway. It takes 22 hours to groom and prepare the runway for every jet landing.

After landing, we climbed a nearby Nunatak (small mountain) and were just amazed at the pristine landscape; the white desert! The sun never set during the Antarctic summer. I also visited the newly opened Echo Camp for refreshments before the flight back. Certainly one of The Greatest Day in my aviation and travel memory!

Meet Sasha, the Lead Scientist at the South Pole Station!

Here I have a chat with Dr. Sasha Rahlin, the Station Science Lead and South Pole Telescope (SPT) scientist over the winter of 2021. Listen to Sasha's thoughts on her role here on station, what winter here is like, how she arrived at this position, and how you could possibly follow in her footsteps.
