Solingen lies southwest of Wuppertal in the Bergisches Land. The city has an area of 89.45 square kilometers (34.54 sq mi), of which roughly 50% is used for agriculture, horticulture, or forestry.

Als Lieferfrauen (mundartlich: Liewerfrauen) bezeichnete man früher in Solingen Frauen, die Klingen- und Scherenteile zwischen den Kontoren der Stahlwarenkaufleute und den Schleifwerkstätten an den Bächen und der Wupper hin- und hertrugen; in der Regel in einem großen Korb auf dem Kopf. Bis in die dreißiger Jahre des 20er Jahrhunderts waren die Lieferfrauen im Solinger Stadtgebiet unterwegs. Bis zu drei Stunden dauerten die Märsche, bei denen sie rund hundert Höhenmeter bewältigen mussten; je nach Schneidwarenart wogen die Körbe 15 bis 25 Kilogramm.

Erlebbar macht ihre Geschichte der thematische Solinger „Liewerfrauenweg“, der aus Mitteln des NRW-Heimatfonds finanziert worden ist. Der etwa 16 Kilometer lange Wanderweg, zugleich der 25. Bergische Streifzug des Bergischen Wanderlandes, zeichnet symbolisch die Transportwege der Lieferfrauen nach.

Der mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln gut erreichbare Weg „erzählt“ Solinger Industrie- und Kulturgeschichte und erschließt die spezifische Solinger Topografie mit ihrem kontrastreichen Wechsel von urbaner Landschaft, Bachtal und Mittelgebirgslandschaft.

Nacker Bach 2022 am rechten Ufer verläuft der Liewerfrauenweg
Der Weg verbindet als Rundweg die ehemalige Stahlwarenfabrik Friedr. Herder Abr. Sohn, das heutige Gründer- und Technologiezentrum Solingens, mit dem vierhundertjährigen Wipperkotten an der Wupper.

Im Gründerzentrum hat sich außerdem das ehemalige „Lieferkontor“ der Firma Herder erhalten, in dem die Arbeiten der Heimarbeiter entgegengenommen wurden.

Liewerfrauenweg
Das Kontor hat ebenfalls aus Mitteln des Heimatzeugnis NRW eine neue, zeitgemäße Dauerausstellung erhalten und dient als Besucherzentrum und Willkommensort für Touristen, Wandernde und alle, die sich für die Solinger Geschichte interessieren.
