Who are Kara and Nate?!
Watch our documentary here:

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married 2013 and were super “normal.” I was a teacher and Nate started a small business from the spare bedroom of our apartment. We discovered the world of “travel hacking” & became obsessed. So after 2 years of saving $35k and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016 for a “one year” trip around the world. Our goal was to see as many places as possible before we rean out of money and went home to normal life. We started this travel vlog to share our experiences with friends and family, but quickly fell in love with this lifestyle and did everything we could to keep going. 4 years later, we achieved our new goal of visiting 100 countries and all 7 continents. We had no plans to slow down, until 2020 forced us to ;) Which is when we bought a converted van to start exploring our own country for the first time. Van life was a major adjustment and so different than flying every week like we were used to, but we are incredibly thankful to be able to continue doing something we love every day. ????????????

Soundtrack for this episode:
T-Shirts:

In this episode, we decided to take a trip to Mohican Memorial State Forest (Mohican State Park) in Ohio to backpack in the winter and the snow and freezing temperatures. The temperatures were below freezing, and it got as low as 1 degree fahrenheit, or possibly even -6 fahrenheit according to one person we talked to. We camped overnight in the snow. We hiked past Mohican Youth Academy towards Pleasant Hill Dam where we did some sledding. Before that we saw the Mohican covered bridge. We then saw Big Lyons Falls and Little Lyons Falls. The falls were frozen into big structures of ice. Unfortunately we didn't get to see the fire tower at Mohican. We used a number of trails including Pine Run Bridle Trail, Grouse Bridle Trail, Pleasant Hill Trail, and Lyons Falls Trail. We also saw the Clearfork Gorge National Natural Landmark Plaque.

Bushcraft Show 2018 Main Stage Presentation

This is a video of my Bushcraft Show 2018 main stage presentation entitled The Value Of Using Wilderness Skills Closer To Home, including the slides I showed during the talk edited into the video. [More info below...]

This was the fifth time I have been invited to be among the expert speakers at the Bushcraft Show. which takes place every year in Derbyshire, England.

Other speakers this year included John Lofty Wiseman, Dr Sarita Robinson, Ed Stafford, Dave Canterbury, Luke Soderling, Barn the Spoon, Will Lord, Fraser Christian and Dan Hume.

My full 55-minute presentation, along with all slides is in the above video.

Below is a short description of the topic of my talk...

REAL WORLD EXPEDITIONING WITH BUSHCRAFT SKILLS
Much of what we consider bushcraft today was tied to journeying in the past, whether it was seasonal migrations of native peoples, frontiersmen pushing into new territories or colonial powers employing expeditionary forces. Despite all the technology and materials available today, bushcraft still has a solid place in modern expeditioning in wild places. From lightweight backpacking to canoe tripping to winter camping by snowshoe and toboggan, bushcraft forms a solid backbone of practical skills for pretty much any environment you can think of. Further, there are psychological benefits of entering wild places with a strong base of bushcraft skills honed close to home. In this presentation I explore and expand upon these concepts, highlighting the bushcraft skills which I have found valuable in a career of wilderness expeditions and which you can benefit from learning then applying wherever you choose to have your adventures.

**GET ADDITIONAL RESOURCES**
Throughout the above presentation I refer to various podcasts, articles and other presentations. The Reality of Life in Russia 2023 (bureaucratic nightmare)

This is our life in Russia in late 2022 / 2023. Traveling to Russia as a westerner has always been difficult, a bureaucratic nightmare, but this year is the first time Matt and I have really had any issues. We arrived in my hometown of Kemerovo, Siberia, after crossing in to Russia at Kaliningrad and flying to Novosibirsk. Once here and staying with my family, we went to register with the local authorities, but everything turned out to be a little complicated to say the least. This is a week in our lives here staying in Siberia as we hang out with my family and prepare for New years eve (the biggest celebration of the year in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and many other former Soviet countries). Welcome to a very cold, wintery Siberia.
