Top 10 Places to Visit in Shanghai - China Travel Documentary

Shanghai is one of the most fascinating cities in China, and in this video I share my personal top 10 places to visit in this amazing city.

Few cities in the world evoke so much imagination as the largest city in China. Rich and glamorous on one corner, rough around the edges on another, Shanghai is truly one of the most fascinating places in the country. Located in the East of China, Shanghai should be high on any traveler’s list.

The video starts off on the Bund, a spectacular waterfront promenade located right in the center of the city. It provides a stunning contrast between historic colonial architecture and the awe-inspiring modern skyline of Pudong on the other side of the Huangpu river. Here, you can get some of the best views across the city. After Pudong, I take you to Nanjing street for some shopping, followed by a moment of calm in the rebuilt Jing’An Temple.

After walking through the People’s (central) park where I encounter a ‘marriage market’, we search for pockets of old Shanghai. These authentic neighborhoods are fast disappearing, as development of apartment towers and shopping malls takes over.

With enough time, it’s possible to plan a few day trips out of Shanghai. Some of my favorite ones are Suzhou, Zhujiajiao, and the impressive Yangshan Port (Shanghai's main container terminal, or harbor). Back in the city, we travel to the outskirts to visit a ‘bicycle graveyard’ and visit a few trade shows. Probably not your regular 'tourist attraction', but interesting places for those interested in doing business in China. The video finishes at the former Expo site, taking you back to one of the largest events ever held in China.

*** The footage in this video was made in the years before the global pandemic. I am currently not traveling, like most people in the world. ***

Thanks for watching and feel free to leave comments below!

SHANGHAI

Shanghai is a very lively, interesting, saturated and pleasant town. It is one of the best cities that I have visited. In this time lapse video I used the footage from two visits to Shanghai in 2014. The first is Chinese New Year... hi Raskalov on the Shanghai tower) It was a trip to China together with dimid vimeo.com/user1232595, During our ten-day trip to Shanghai we met with our friends from Union of Timelapse China vimeo.com/timelapsechina, and also visited several roofs with Vitaliy Raskalov and Vadim Makhorov. During the second visit to Shanghai in the summer I continued to explore the city, and of course the roofs, at the same day with a time lapse photographer from Nanjing warrior_lmd vimeo.com/user36346657! The city is an incredibly huge, and I’m sorry for showing you only its center because I had a little time.. There are delightful road junctions and bridges in Shanghai, you can enjoy them in this video. I do like this gorgeous city and I hope that I will be able to visit it again and again!

Shanghai: The Most Developed City in China - A Driving Tour You Don’t Wanna Miss

Love Shanghai, love the city and love Lujiazui!

Lujiazui is Shanghai’s glitzy financial district, known for futuristic skyscrapers like the Shanghai Tower, with its lofty observation deck, and the needle-like Oriental Pearl TV Tower, home to the Shanghai Municipal History Museum.

The area is also noted for its luxe-hotel nightlife, with European fine dining, stylish bars and posh dance clubs offering panoramic views.

Lying on the east bank of Huangpu River and facing the Bund, Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone occupies 28 square kilometers (10.8 square miles) and is studded with around 100 high-rise buildings.

Many are landmark buildings of Shanghai, making the area a great place to experience the modern flavor of this metropolis.

Often called the 'Wall Street of China', Lujiazui is the largest financial zone in mainland China, with more than 400 banks and financial institutions from both home and abroad, including HSBC, Citibank, and Standard Chartered Bank.

In addition, it is home to the headquarters of over 70 international giants and about 5,000 companies engaged in trade, investment, and intermediary services. The sum of transactions in the Shanghai stock market ranks it the 2nd in the world only behind the New York Stock Exchange.

Since the reform and opening-up policy carried out in 1978, Shanghai has enjoyed a great economic boom, and Lujiazui is gradually becoming more widely known. However, few know the origin of the name (Lu Jia Zui in Chinese), which literally means Lu family dwelling on a mouth-shaped alluvial beach.

In fact, the name is associated with Lu Shen, a noted scholar of Imperial Academy in the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). After Lu retired, he lived on this land until his death. Today, you can still find Lu Shen's calligraphy in Shanghai Museum. His former residence and family cemetery are located in this area.

In Lujiazui, the charm of the city as an international metropolis is unfolded to the largest degree. One can admire the modern skyscrapers along Binjiang Avenue as well as various buildings of different architectural styles across the Huangpu River.

The four tallest landmarks of the city - the Oriental Pearl Tower, Jin Mao Tower, Shanghai World Financial Center, and Shanghai Tower are constructed next to each other. When night comes, all the buildings are decorated with shining colorful lights, presenting a gorgeous scene before your eyes. The Bund, facing this financial zone across the river, is the most wonderful place to enjoy the night view.

---------------------⭐⭐
Oriental Pearl Tower
Oriental Pearl Tower, measuring 468 meters (1,536 feet) in height, has three viewing floors. An exhibition hall, demonstrating the history of the city, is at the base of the tower. The lower sphere has a viewing hall at a height of 90 meters (295 feet), providing a wonderful position to see the Bund and the graceful scenery along the Huangpu River. Visitors can also have a panoramic view of the whole city on the transparent observatory at 259 meters (850 feet) or the Capsule Sightseeing Floor at 351 meters (1,152 feet).

---------------------⭐⭐
Jin Mao Tower
Jin Mao Tower, with a height of 420.5 meters (1,380 feet), is also a good place to view the city. The superfast elevator takes only 45 seconds to take visitors from the basement to the viewing hall on the 88th floor, providing visitors magnificent metropolitan cityscapes along Huangpu River, and views of the distinctive rosy dawn and sunset.

---------------------⭐⭐
Shanghai World Financial Center
As the tallest flat-roof building in the world, it is 492 meters (1,614 feet) high with 101 stories. Sightseeing area occupies storeys from the 94th to the 100th floor. The viewing hall on the 100th floor is at a height of 474 meters (1,555 feet). The sightseeing bridge on the 97th floor seems to be constructed in the air. It would give you an illusion that you are wandering in the sky.

---------------------⭐⭐
Shanghai Tower
At present, it is the tallest building in China, measuring 632 meters (2,073 feet) in height. The exterior of the building spirals upward to the top with one degree twist per storey to reduce the wind effect.

Shanghai 2023 Night Walk, The Most Famous Night View City in China | Taikoo Li Qiantan, Yu Garden

It's been a long time since I took a night view video of Shanghai.

This video was shot in March 2023, when the weather was still cold. There were not many crowds at that time, and I had a very pleasant shooting night in Shanghai.

Shanghai, an international city, is located in the east of China.

With its world-famous landmarks such as Jin Mao Building, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and Lujiazui financial centre, Shanghai has become most travellers' tourist destination.

If you enjoy shopping, you can go to Nanjing Road and Huaihai Road. They are called Shopping Paradise in Shanghai. You won't feel bored if you walk on these two roads and many goods and beautiful scenery will attract your eyes.

If you enjoy eating delicious food, I will take you to Yu Garden and a lot of local snacks will wait for you there.

-------------------⭐⭐
Taikoo Li Qiantan, The Amazing Mega-mall
-------------------⭐⭐
Taikoo Li Qiantan, the first “Taikoo Li” project in Shanghai, is tailor-made for the Qiantan International Business District and follows the successful landmarks of Taikoo Li Sanlitun in Beijing and Sino-Ocean Taikoo Li Chengdu.

Spanning a total floor area of approximately 120,000 square meters, Taikoo Li Qiantan maintains the essence of the “Taikoo Li” brand, renowned for its open-plan and lane-driven architectural design. The project features the “Double-open park concept”, a wide expanse of open green space and lanes across the ground level and rooftop, connected by an 80-metre-long Scenic Bridge overlooking the Huangpu River.

Taikoo Li Qiantan’s wellness-themed shopping concept is showcased with the south and north zones, also known as the “Stone Zone” and the “Wood Zone”, which feature a naturalistic design concept inspired by stone and wood across the façade and which are connected via an 8,000 square meters central park. The two zones offer a diverse mix of luxury and contemporary fashion labels, lifestyle brands and F&B concepts, with all of these elements coming together to create a unique ‘Wellness’ experience for visitors.

Taikoo Li Qiantan features a host of international luxury brands, including Audemars Piguet, Balenciaga, Bulgari, Cartier, Dior, Fendi, Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Hermès, Loewe, Louis Vuitton, Moncler, Prada, Saint Laurent, Tiffany & Co., and Zegna.

Alongside some 50 brands that are debuting their first stores in Pudong, over 20 tenant partners are showcasing unique “Garden-concepts” to echo the Wellness theme of Taikoo Li Qiantan: a temporary store by Louis Vuitton with a new design concept inspired by Louis Vuitton’s Monogram 4 petal flower pattern; the first Oasi Zegna Garden in the Chinese Mainland; Boucheron Jardin d’Hiver – a first in Shanghai presented by Boucheron; Starbucks’ Greener Store Lab, a global first; and AVENUE & SON’s first store in the Chinese Mainland with a skatepark.

With Lujiazui Group taking the lead in its development, Qiantan is fast emerging as an international Central Activity Zone (CAZ). Located at the heart of Shanghai along the Huangpu River, the district spans 2.83 square kilometer.

The Bund is the most popular but often the most expensive area to go clubbing. What makes it so pricey is that most clubs have an amazing view of Pudong and the Huangpu River. One of the most exclusive bars in Shanghai is Bar Rouge, a lounge with a French-Shanghai atmosphere. Another famous bar with a view is Mint, famous for its shark tank at the entrance.

Every type of night out is on offer in Shanghai. From low-key lounge bars to neon-lit roller discos.

What is Shanghai’s nightlife scene like?
-------------------⭐⭐
As China’s second-most populous city with over 26 million citizens, it’s safe to say Shanghai caters to a varied crowd. With a huge number of migrants, businesspeople and travellers flocking to the city, life here is best lived in the fast lane. This is telling of its nightlife scene, with many new bars replacing old haunts or rebranding as an even bigger, even better experience. So, whether you want a gritty, underground affair or a high-end, opulent rendezvous, there are more than enough options to find something that ticks the bill.

Night Walk In Shanghai | From The Bund To East Nanjing Road | 4K | 上海 | 外滩 | 南京路步行街

★★ The Bund ★★
------------------------------
Coming to Shanghai and missing the Bund is like visiting Beijing and bypassing the Forbidden City or the Great Wall.

The Bund is the iconic landmark of Shanghai and the area around the Bund is the tourist center of Shanghai and is the city's most famous mile.

The word bund means an embankment or an embanked quay.

The Chinese name for the Bund is unrelated in meaning: it means literally the outer bank, referring to the Huangpu River, because this part of the riverfront was located farther downstream than the inner bank area adjacent to the old walled city of Shanghai.

The Bund is a famous waterfront on the west bank of Huangpu River and regarded as the symbol of Shanghai.

Here, the charm of Shanghai as a bustling metropolis combining the century-old history and flourishing future is fully presented, making the Bund Shanghai a must-see attraction.

The most classic route to explore the Bund is either to wander from the north end to the south or the contrary way.

Along the way, you will see the most famous and attractive sight in the Bund, namely 26 colonial-era buildings of different western architectural styles, which give the Bund Shanghai China the fame as a 'museum of international architecture'.

------------------------------
★★ The East Nanjing Road ★★
------------------------------
Nanjing Road is a road in Shanghai.

The eastern part of Nanjing Road is the main shopping streets of Shanghai, China, and is one of the world's busiest shopping streets along with Fifth Avenue and Times Square.

The street is named after the city of Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu neighbouring Shanghai.

Today's Nanjing Road comprises two sections, Nanjing Road East and Nanjing Road West.

East Nanjing Road is committed a commercial zone.

In the west part of precinct was traditionally the hub of European-style restaurants and cafes, but in recent years some other buildings were constructed in this area, it has become less of a feature as the demographics of visitors to Nanjing Road have shifted from affluent local residents to visitors from around the country.

Close by is the Central Market, a century-old outdoor market today specialising in electronic components and digital media.

Further west is the Nanjing Road pedestrian mall. Located there are most of Shanghai's oldest and largest department stores, as well as a variety of domestic retail outlets, and some traditional eateries with a long history.

------------------------------
★★ The Largest Huawei Flagship Store ★★
------------------------------
Huawei hosted the Grand Opening of its largest Huawei flagship store on Shanghai East Nanjing Road on June, 2020.

The Store is Located in the Nanjing Building in the city's thriving commercial hub, with a business area of nearly 5000 square meters.

The Art Deco-style building was built in 1935, by Mr. Silas Aaron Hardoon, a British real estate tycoon. Careful renovation, incorporating modern design and materials, has breathed new life into this historic building, making it a City Square where the local community can have fun, learn, share and innovate.

The East Nanjing Road flagship store provides consumers with rich full-scenario experience, enabling every guest to truly experience how ubiquitous connectivity will seamlessly integrate AI into every aspect of their daily life.
