West African Countries Fighting To Keep Their Traditions Alive: Part 1 | Today In Africa | TRACKS

Of all of West Africa, Senegal is probably the country that has been affected the most my environmental chances that are impacting the oceans. Subject to the wrath of Mother Nature, the seafaring people have a dilemma to face, should they take to the open seas, or stay put?
Elsewhere, wedged between the vast wildernesses of the Atlantic and the Sahara, Mauritania was born of sand and wind. In order to survive there, people became nomads. A tough way of life, this forged the identity of their nation, however this is now disappearing.

The Slave Island. Gorée Senegal

Gorée is a tiny, car-free island off the coast of Dakar, in Senegal. It's known for its role in the 15th- to 19th-century Atlantic slave trade. On the narrow streets, colonial buildings include the House of Slaves, now a museum. The 19th-century Fort d'Estrées houses the IFAN Historical Museum, with exhibits on Senegal's past. The Henriette Bathily Women's Museum considers the role of women in West African society.

Gorée Island was first visited (1444) by Portuguese sailors under Dinís Dias and occupied in subsequent years. The island's indigenous Lebu people were later displaced, and fortifications were erected. The town was active in the Atlantic slave trade from 1536 until 1848, when slavery was abolished in Senegal. Historians debate whether Gorée was a major entrepôt for the trade or simply one of many centres from which Africans were taken to the Americas.

Gorée changed hands several times, but from 1817 until Senegal's independence in 1960 it was under the control of France. As early as 1848 Gorée participated in French elections, and it was represented in the French Parliament during the first half of the 20th century. The island's importance steadily declined with the rise of Saint-Louis and Dakar on the mainland.

Several museums and the remains of colonial-era forts attract tourists. The Maison des Esclaves (Slave House), which was constructed in 1786, includes displays of slavery artifacts, and the Fort d'Estrées (built in the 1850s) is the site of a historical museum. There are also museums of women's history and of the sea. In 1978 Gorée Island was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and several of its historic structures were restored in the 1980s and '90s.

Senegal Travel Doc Part 01

Senegal, officially the Republic of Senegal, is a country south of the Sénégal River in western Africa. Senegal is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Mauritania to the north, Mali to the east, and Guinea and Guinea-Bissau to the south. The Gambia lies almost entirely within Senegal, surrounded on the north, east and south; from its western coast, Gambia's territory follows the Gambia River more than 300 kilometres (186 miles) inland. Dakar is the capital city of Senegal, located on the Cape Verde Peninsula on the country's Atlantic coast.

Exploring Senegal

Research Presentation

My film project is an exploration of Senegalese Culture, Religion, & Natural life. I complied my research from our summer's learning including our class excursions, independent outings, and class material.

How does history, religion, and the natural geography of Senegal influence its culture?

Senegal's Precolonial, Colonial, and Postcolonial history have greatly shaped its modern culture. Along with its natural geography and religious influences, Senegal has a vibrant and rich culture that heavily interacts with its natural world.

I begin my exploration by introducing Senegal today and it's Colonial and Post-colonial history. I discuss the influences of France on modern day Senegal and briefly talk about the transatlantic slave trade that we learned about during our visit to Goree Island.

Following Senegal's history, an introduction of Senegalese culture begins. I share my experiences with the food and social traditions in Senegal, including the delicious tradition of drinking Ataya tea. This transitions into a discussion on the predominant religions in Senegal. I begin with a culmination of visits to local mosques and The Great Mosque of Touba, including mentions of Amadou Bamba's significance to the Mouridie brotherhood. This takes my exploration into the experience of visiting a Quranic school in Dakar and the role of Quranic Education in Senegalese tradition.

Following the visit to the Quranic School, a presentation of our trip to the Monastery introduces viewers to the practice of Christianity in Senegal. I discuss the history of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Monastery and talk about how it sustains itself through cultivating its own fruits, instruments, and raising livestock.

I then follow the Monastery visit by our cultural experience in Kaolack. I talk about the lunch we had and the short after party experience we shared with the women outside the home.

This leads my exploration to our visit to Toubacouta, where a bit of nature and more Senegalese culture is further explored. I shared experiences on the tradition of drumming and dance in Senegal, followed by the importance of wrestling to many Senegalese people. This leads into our safari where Senegal's natural life and beauty is observed. After introducing some of the animals we saw on our excursion, I briefly talk about the value of animals, and the continuation of camel riding that still exists in this country.

Finally I close my video project with scenic clips of many of the beautiful beaches and breathtaking Senegalese coasts we visited, revealing the last bits of my experience with Senegal's natural beauty.

As is evident by all the video clips and photos, my main sources of research are the excursions where I was able to gather most of my data. Other sources included my class lecture notes and referencing readings we were assigned throughout the semester.
