Selinunte, Marinella di Selinunte, Trapani, Sicily, Italy, Europe

Selinunte was an ancient Greek city on the south-western coast of Sicily in Italy. It was situated between the valleys of the Cottone and Modione rivers. It now lies in the comune Castelvetrano, between the frazioni of Triscina di Selinunte in the west and Marinella di Selinunte in the east. The archaeological site contains five temples centered on an acropolis. Of the five temples, only the Temple of Hera, also known as Temple E, has been re-erected. At its peak before 409 BC the city may have contained up to 30,000 people, excluding slaves. Selinunte was one of the most important of the Greek colonies in Sicily, situated on the southwest coast of that island, at the mouth of the small river of the same name, and 6.5 km west of the Hypsas river (the modern Belice). It was founded, according to the historian Thucydides, by a colony from the Sicilian city of Megara Hyblaea, under the leadership of a man called Pammilus, about 100 years after the foundation of Megara Hyblaea, with the help of colonists from Megara in Greece, which was Megara Hyblaea's mother city. The date of its foundation cannot be precisely fixed, as Thucydides indicates it only by reference to the foundation of Megara Hyblaea, which is itself not accurately known, but it may be placed about 628 BCE. Diodorus places it 22 years earlier, or 650 BCE, and Hieronymus still further back in 654 BCE. The date from Thucydides, which is probably the most likely, is incompatible with this earlier date. The name is supposed to have been derived from quantities of wild celery that grew on the spot. For the same reason, they adopted the celery leaf as the symbol on their coins. Selinunte was the most westerly of the Greek colonies in Sicily, and for this reason they soon came into contact with the Phoenicians of western Sicily and the native Sicilians in the west and northwest of the island. The Phoenicians do not at first seem to have conflicted with them; but as early as 580 BCE the Selinuntines were engaged in hostilities with the non-Greek Elymian people of Segesta, whose territory bordered their own. A body of emigrants from Rhodes and Cnidus who subsequently founded Lipara, supported the Segestans on this occasion, leading to their victory; but disputes and hostilities between the Segestans and Selinuntines seem to have occurred frequently, and it is possible that when Diodorus speaks of the Segestans being at war with the Lilybaeans (modern Marsala) in 454 BCE, that the Selinuntines are the people really meant.

Selinunte (Sicily) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Selinunte in Sicily.
Proudly and majestically the ‘E Temple’ that it is believed was originally built in honour of the Greek goddess, Hera, rises up from the meadows of Selinunte. Although rebuilt in recent times, its columns are evocative of Sicily’s colourful history. For many centuries little was visible of the once important city of Selinus that is situated on the border of the former Greek Empire. Tall sand dunes once covered the impressive architectural heritage of this coastal city, including the buildings of the eastern temple district. The ancient city was discovered in the sixteenth century by a Sicilian historian but it was not until the 1950’s that the Hera Temple was restored. In 409 B.C. the Carthaginians attacked the formerly friendly city of Selinus, although the reason for this remains a mystery. The people of Selinus were unable to defend themselves against the military might of Hannibal thus large areas of the city were completely destroyed. Measuring around two hundred and eighty-four hectares, Selinunte is the largest archaeological excavation site in Europe and who knows how many more treasures may one day be discovered?

Sicily Travel Guide: Selinunte Archaeological site - Beautiful Greek Temple Tour in Italy

The captivating archeological site of Selinunte on the South-Western coast of Sicily has some of the most impressive ruins you will find in Italy. It contains 5 temples centered on an acropolis that overlooks the sea. The massive Temple of Hera has been erected and is truly a site to see. The Acropolis is surrounded by the ruins of the Ancient Greek city, which was one of the most important Greek colonies in Sicily and once contained up to 30,000 people, excluding slaves.

We visited Selinunte while staying in Trapani. It was an easy day-trip with the drive taking about 1 1/2 hours each way. We made the visit in late July and it was hot! The site is spread out over 5km, so be sure to hire a driver to take you to each ruin in a golf cart.

Don't forget to give this video a thumbs up if you enjoyed and to subscribe for more travel content!

The ruins of the Ancient Greek town of Selinunte is one of the most important and impressive Classical sites in Sicily. It is the largest archeological park in Europe. Situated by the sea in the south-western corner of Sicily, the isolated ruins here have stood abandoned for most of their history. The lack of later development allows modern visitors to imagine the ancient town of Selinus as it would have been two and a half thousand years ago. The archaeological park at Selinunte is huge, incorporating Greek temples, ancient town walls, the ruins of residential and commercial buildings, countryside paths and zones not yet excavated.
