Riga, Latvia has become one of our favorite places this summer! We took a tour of the KGB House which has been turned into a museum. However after our tour, our guide took us to the untouched basement and upstairs of the house, and it was very spooky. This vlog also includes a local Latvian lunch of dumplings which we were charged by the weight, and a massive cup of coffee. Both SUPER affordable compared to what we've been paying in Iceland!

Visiting a KGB interrogation facility in Riga, Latvia ????????
In this video I take you on a short tour of the KGB house in Riga, Latvia (also referred to as the KGB Museum) which served as an interrogation facility for the region. In this house of horror, many people were tortured and killed. The living conditions were horrific. There are stories of pregnant women being beaten to the point where they lost their baby and 50 people being crammed into a very small room with a muddy floor for weeks on end. This place will make your skin crawl and is a very good memory of the evils we never want to see again. Must see if you are in Riga, Latvia.

리가 구시가지 입구 광장에는 자유의 여신상이 세워져 있다. 제정러시아로부터 독립을 기념해서 만들었지만 독립의 기쁨은 잠시. 구소련의 지배가 시작된다. 리가 시를 동서로 가로지르는 브리비바스 거리. 이곳에는 소련 지배 시절 KGB건물이 서 있다. 스투라 마야 즉 ‘구석 집’이라 불렸던 곳이다. 리가 시는 유럽문화수도를 기념해올 5월부터 KGB거물 내부를 일반인에게 공개하고 있다. 건물로 들어서면 먼저소련 지배 시절 ‘체카’로 불렸던 KGB에 관한 자료가 전시돼 있다. 등록소에는 이유도 모른 채 끌려왔던 당시 사람들의 증명사진들이 걸려있다. 심문실을 지나서 안내인은 지하 감방으로 나를 안내했다. 대로변 건물에 감방이 있었다니 정말 놀라웠다. “여긴 감방 시설이 있는 1층 건물인데 이 아래 지하에도 감방이 있었어요. 이곳 감방은 작은 것에서 큰 것까지 다양했어요. 대부분 한 두 사람을 수용할 수 있는 작은 방인데 나중엔 그보다 많은 사람을 수용했어요.” 당시 수감자의 고통을 집작하게 하는 작은 독방. 눕지도 못하고 앉아만 있어야 했다. 6인용 감방은 사람들이 많이 들어오면 20명까지 수용했다고 한다. 기본적인 인권은 생각 할 수도 없는 곳이었다. “문에 있는 구멍으로도 방을 감시할 수 있었지만 이 구멍을 통해서도 감시했어요,” 수감자들은 감방 내에서도 일거수일투족이 이중으로 감시되고 있었다. 당시 이곳에는 44개의 크고 작은 감방에 175개의 침상이 있었다고 한다. “이 벽 뒤에는 체카(KGB)가 1941년 1월부터 6월까지 사람들을 총살했던 방이 있어요.” 재판도 없이 이곳에서 사람들은 총살을 당하고 죽어서 나갔다. 당시 얼마나 많은 사람들이 희생됐는지 제대로 알려지지 않고 있다고 한다.

The room I was cheka (KGB) have shot dead people January-June 1941 after the wall in the trial where people went to die without a shot being. The time that happened is unknown how many people sacrificed properly.

???????? RIGA, LATVIA - Welcome to Riga, Latvia! This video is Part 2 of my 4 part 2020 Latvia Travel series which also includes a trip to Tallinn, Estonia! In this series, we are checking out some of the history of Riga and some of the things to do in Riga, including the beautiful art nouveau Riga Old Town, Riga Central Market, and much more.
In this video, we visit the Freedom Monument in Riga and discuss the history of power struggles, occupation and independence in Latvia, an addition to visiting the harrowing and heartbreaking Corner House (KGB Headquarters), a building which once housed the Cheka (otherwise known as the KGB, the secret police of the USSR during the time of the Soviet Union until it's breakdown in 1991).
If you're planning a Riga trip in 2021 to explore Riga history or Soviet Union history, I would 100% recommend visiting the Corner House. Obviously, it's not for the faint-hearted, but it is an incredibly interesting building to learn about the history of Riga. It really puts things into perspective.

Note that this was the first video I filmed using a new phone so I had some teething troubles with wind and microphone issues. You can turn on the subtitles if the wind is annoying. There is one scene where the sound only works in the left ear if you are using headphones so make sure you have both headphones in. It's not an issue from the next video.

Inspired by a Black Martyr - The House of the Blackheads - Riga - Latvia - Travel Guide
There's a fairly secretive society found throughout the Baltics called the Blackheads. In Riga, they built a House many centuries ago. In this video, I explore The House of the Blackheads. It was renovated just before the last Millenium having been destroyed in World War 2. Some say the knights of King Arthur were inspired by the Black Martyr Saint Maurice. Join me while I explore this fascinating house and learn things I never previously knew.

I traveled to Riga for only 4 days and managed to see and do a lot in that short given timeframe. Riga is the largest city of the Baltics and offers a lot of cool things to do in Riga itself but also just a short train ride out of the center in Sigulda.
This video showcases the combination of a city trip and and action packed day out in the nature. My personal highlight has been the flight in the vertical wind tunnel Aerodium near Sigulda - if you feel like you can even go Bungee Jumping there.

Join me on my first 2 days exploring Riga. I took a very emotional tour of the KGB House, learnt about the soviet occupation of Latvia, explored the art nouveau architecture and got lost in the narrow, cobbled streets of the Old Town.

KGB SPYING MUSEUM VIRU HOTEL TALLINN ESTONIA
A former KGB spying and hotel room monitoring control suite are open to the public at the Viru Hotel in Tallinn in Estonia.
60 rooms in the hotel had secret microphones installed or had small holes where cameras could be placed in order to take pictures of the guests too.
The KGB Museum - Tallinn - Possibly the worst Museum in the World?
Thinking of visiting the KGB Museum in the Veru Hotel in Tallinn Estonia? Of course you are - it's in the Top 5 places to go in Tallinn according to TripAdvisor (as of Making this video in April 2017).
Well here is a short video to show you the KGB Museum so you can decide whether or not you want to spend the money and waste your time going. If like me you enjoy a good Spy Novel and lap up history books on the KGB then maybe you will still visit. However spoiler alert this video pretty much shows you everything at the Museum.

Come join TheCeļotājs journey through time, as we visit the building that held the Former Headquarters of the Soviet KGB located at Brīvības iela 61, and the corner of Stabu iela.
Known as the highest building in Latvia, because from the top floor of the building they said you could see Siberia, many hundreds of thousands of Latvians were taken here to be tortured before either being murdered or transported to Siberia. In the basement there are holding cells and a room in the rear of the basement that was used to execute prisoners. Interrogations and torturing was done on the upper floors
The Black Threshold
Located at Brīvības iela 61 and on the Stabu iela side of the building you will find the Melnais slieksnis The Black Threshold installed at the side of Stūra māja The Corner House, the Headquarters of the Soviet Security institutions, on 14 June 2003 by the Museum of Occupation of Latvia is a memorial to the martyrs of the Soviet occupation. The memorial consists of a half-open steel door and a plaque. On the left side of the half-open steel door is inscribed these words;

During the Soviet Occupation the State Security Agency / KBG / Imprisoned, Tortured, Killed and Morally Humiliated its Victims in this building

I felt chills down my spine seeing the isolation rooms and the standing rooms. But I am happy with what the memorial site and Dr Reich's staff in undertaking. Uncovering the stories of the prisoners is important work. When one looks at those walls, one can only be drawn to them, wanting to know more about the people who made those marks, people who perhaps wished that someday, somehow, by literally leaving their marks, their stories would be known...
