Waiotapu-Rotorua-New Zealand:
Waiotapu (Māori for sacred waters) is an active geothermal area at the southern end of the Okataina Volcanic Centre, just north of the Reporoa caldera, in New Zealand's Taupo Volcanic Zone. It is 27 kilometres south of Rotorua.The area has many hot springs noted for their colourful appearance, in addition to the Lady Knox Geyser, Champagne Pool, Artist's Palette, Primrose Terrace and boiling mud pools. The geothermal area covers 18 square kilometres.[1] Prior to European occupation the area was the homeland of the Ngati Whaoa tribe who descended from those on the Arawa waka (canoe).The area has a long history as a tourist attraction. While the area has been protected as a scenic reserve since 1931, a tourist operation occupies part of the reserve under a concession. It operates under the name Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland.The business was bought in 2012 by Te Arawa Group Holdings, a local Maori tribal business, from the Sewell/Leinhardt family, who had run it for 30 years.
Rotorua:
Rotorua (from Māori: Te Rotorua-nui-a-Kahumatamomoe, The second great lake of Kahumatamomoe) is a city on the southern shores of the lake of the same name, in the Bay of Plenty area of the North Island of New Zealand. The city is the seat of the Rotorua District, a territorial authority encompassing the city and several other nearby towns. The majority of the Rotorua District, including the city, is in the Bay of Plenty local government region; a sizable southern section and a small western section are in the Waikato local government region. Rotorua city has an estimated permanent population of 56,100; the Rotorua District has a total estimated population of 68,700[3], of which 3,600 live in the Waikato section. The city is in the heart of the North Island, just 60 kilometres (37 mi) south of Tauranga, 80 kilometres (50 mi) north of Taupo, 105 kilometres (65 mi) east of Hamilton, and 230 kilometres (140 mi) southeast of the nation's most populous city, Auckland.
Rotorua is a major destination for both domestic and international tourists; the tourism industry is by far the largest industry in the district. The city is known for its geothermal activity, and features geysers -- notably the Pohutu Geyser at Whakarewarewa -- and hot mud pools. This thermal activity is sourced to the Rotorua caldera, on which the city lies. Rotorua is home to the Waiariki Institute of Technology.The Lakes of Rotorua are a collection of many lakes surrounding the city of Rotorua.Wikipedia

Rotorua Attraction, New Zealand travel

Rotorua Attraction, New Zealand travel, Geothermal Wonders, Hobbits, Zorbing, Polynesian Spa, The Agrodome, Hike in a Redwood Forest, Croucher Brewery
Travel & Trips Videos 4K 🔔

I knew from my few previous travels around the North Island that Rotorua is considered by many as the tourism epicenter of the region.

Although Taupo also has a lot to offer, not to mention it is absolutely beautiful, it’s the little brother to all that I found in Rotorua.

I’ve already written about quite a few of the activities and things to see in Rotorua, but the town deserves an all-encompassing post as well to give you an idea of how you can spend your time in a smelly, I mean special, part of New Zealand.

7 things to do in Rotorua, New Zealand
----------------------------------------------------

1. Geothermal Wonders

It’s no surprise that discovering geothermal activity is high on the list of what to do in Rotorua. As I’ve mentioned before, you can smell the sulfur from a mile away.

I personally enjoyed the geothermal wonderland of Wai-O-Tapu, 20 minutes outside the city, as it had a variety of colorful minerals throughout the park, and plenty of attractions to be entertained by.

In addition, Wai-O-Tapu is one of the largest geothermal areas in New Zealand, so that in itself tells you there’s something special about the place. At $32.50 for an adult entry, there is plenty to see to while away a half day and take your time enjoying the sights… and the smells.

If Wai-O-Tapu is not your thing, or you’re looking for even more of Rotorua’s geothermal history to explore, there are a quite a few other attractions that would be great to check out.

Tikitere (Hell’s Gate) ~ $35

Whakarewarewa ~ $35 – $66

Waimangu ~ $36

Orakei Korako (The Hidden Valley) ~ $36

2. Hobbits

Since The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films have become popular in New Zealand, hobbit mania has taken over Rotorua, as well as the rest of the country.

The reason for this hobbit mania in Rotorua, specifically, is that a real-life Shire was created outside the small farm town of Matamata at the Alexander Farm by the name of Hobbiton.

Rotorua is the closest city to this man-made Shire, and therefore is a popular hub for transporting tourists an hour away to the outskirts of Matamata to indulge in all that is hobbit life.

Even not being a huge fanatic of the films, I enjoyed taking a day to see the set and pretend that I was perhaps a hobbit in another lifetime.

The official tour of Hobbiton costs $110 and includes a knowledgeable tour guide, transport from Rotorua and back, and a free beer – or ginger beer for those non-alcoholics – at The Green Dragon pub.

3. Zorbing

Another Rotorua attraction I’ve already discussed at length, zorbing is one of those wacky, very Kiwi things to try out and laugh your way to the bottom.

It’s one of the weirder feelings I’ve had, zig zagging down a hill, while being inside a revolving sphere with one of my best friends and a bit of water, but it sure was fun.

There are two zorbing companies in Rotorua: ZORB and OGO. I chose OGO, the reasons for which I discussed here, and it was worth every penny.

Although you can find zorbing in a few other places around the world, New Zealand is the birthplace of the zorb, and where it all started, so you may as well get your kicks while you’re in Rotorua and go roll down a big hill.

Zorbing with OGO starts at $45 to $60 per person for one ride depending on which track you choose, but it goes down in price if you decide to do it with a friend or two.

4. Polynesian Spa

I’ve never had a professional spa treatment before – unless you count that one time I bought a $5 massage on the beach in Bali – so the Polynesian Spa in Rotorua is the closest I’ve come to feeling pampered.

I didn’t do any of the specific spa treatments they had on offer, but used the more affordable adult only pools (yay no kids!) at $27 per person for entry as long as you like – add on an additional $5 if you want to rent a locker. There were multiple pools to choose from of varying hot temperatures (36C -42C), and a Priest Spa some believe to have healing properties.

5. The Agrodome

Oddly enough, with all of the options and activities to do in Rotorua, going to the Agrodome and watching the farm show was one of my fondest memories from the place.

6. Hike in a Redwood Forest

I was planning on hiking in the Redwood Forest, also known as the Whakarewarewa Forest, on the day I left Rotorua for Wellington as it looked to be on the way.

7. Visit Croucher Brewery

Another one on the list that I didn’t actually get to myself, but hear me out, if you’re into craft beer and you have more time than I did, go visit Croucher Brewery.

ONE DAY IN ROTORUA, NEW ZEALAND: THE REDWOODS AND TE PUIA /// THESTYLEJUNGLE VLOG #15

Rotorua is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the North Island of New Zealand. It's one of our favourite places for short trips as well. Every time somebody visits us, we suggest going to Rotorua and explore some of the activities there.

This time we decided to revisit The Redwoods (Whakarewarewa Forest) and do famous tree walk there. This short walkway is very special because it is located between giant redwood trees above the ground! Exploring this forest by walking these shaking bridges is a unique experience!

Our next stop was at Te Puia Geothermal Valley and Maori Village. It is a one-stop-shop for tourists looking for ultimate Rotorua experience. You can find two main points of interests in this region (Maori Culture and Volcanic Valleys) at one place. Amazing Maori concert and views of the Pohutu geyser make Te Puia a must visit place both for local people and tourist from all over the world.

Top Tourist Attractions in New Zealand
Milford Sound
========
Milford Sound is among the most famous tourist attractions in New Zealand. Lying at the most northern and accessible end of Fiordland National Park, Milford sound offers some of the world's most staggering coastal scenery with its dramatic peaks and dark blue waters. The area's frequent downpours only enhance this South Island beauty, sending numerous waterfalls cascading down the cliffs.

Bay of Islands
==========
The Bay of Islands is one of the most popular holiday destinations in New Zealand. The picturesque area contains 144 islands, many secluded bays and some great sandy beaches. This beautiful bay has an abundance of marine life including whales, penguins, dolphins and the big marlin. Not surprisingly, it is a popular tourist spot for sailing yachts on world cruises and international sport fishermen.

Tongariro National Park
===================
The first national park of New Zealand, Tongariro is known for its surprises and extremes. The park's diverse range of ecosystems includes tranquil lakes, active volcanoes, herb fields, untamed forests and desert-like plateaus. Start your trek at the Whakapapa Visitor Center, just a three hour hike from the stunning Taranaki Falls. The short hike will take you through scrubland and forest and across the lava line of volcanic eruptions from hundreds of years ago.

Rotorua
========
Rotorua is known as the thermal wonderland of New Zealand. There are numerous geysers and hot springs in and around the city. Many of these are in parks and reserves. Natural eruptions of steam, hot water and mud occasionally occur in new locations. Nearby Wai-O-Tapu is also a popular tourist attraction with many hot springs noted for their colorful appearance, in addition to the Lady Knox Geyser.

Franz Josef Glacier
=============
This glacier, located within Westland National Park in the southwest, is one of the world's most accessible. Visitors can walk right up to the foot of the massive glacier or take a helicopter ride over the dazzling Ice Age remnant. Together with Fox Glacier it is one of South Westland's major drawcards for tourists.

Kaikoura
========
This small coastal town on the South Island is a haven for seafood lovers. You can spot fur seals, dolphins, sperm whales and albatrosses off the shore, then indulge in a feast of fresh crayfish, mussels, blue cod and more. Land lovers can take a wilderness walk through the untamed and dramatic Kaikoura forest.

Napier Art Deco
========
Napier, a small city in Hawke's Bay on the North Island's east coast, is famous for its eye-catching art deco architecture. Most of Napier was leveled by an earthquake in 1931. The rebuilding period coincided with the short-lived Art Deco era and as a result Napier's architecture is strikingly different from any other city in the world. Thousands of tourist visit Napier every February for the Art Deco Weekend, an event dedicated to the style, vintage cars, picnics and the soapbox derby.

Sky Tower
===============
The Sky Tower is an observation and telecommunications tower located in New Zealand's largest city. At a height of 328 meters (1,076 ft) it is the tallest free-standing structure in the Southern Hemisphere and the Sky Tower has become an iconic structure in Auckland's skyline. The tower offers views of up to 80 km away and fine dining in the Orbit revolving restaurant.

Abel Tasman National Park
===============
Located on the northern tip of the country's South Island, this vast national park is a hiker's dream. Closed to vehicles, one must enter by boat, foot or small plane, but the trip is well worth it. While traversing the mountainous terrain, blue penguins, wekas, oyster catchers, wood pigeons and other rare birds can all be seen.

Coromandel Peninsula
==============
This north-eastern peninsula is famous for its white and golden sand beaches that frame magnificent coastal scenery, forests perfect for days of exploration and other natural wonders. Start your visit in Thames, a small but picturesque city with a rich history of gold mining. Don't miss a stop at Hot Water Beach, where visitors can dig their own hot pool from the springs under the sands.
