Exploring The Appian Way - Ancient Rome's First Highway

The saying goes, all roads lead to Rome. The Appian Way, or Via Appia Antica, was the first road of Rome's highways to be built, and the road that set the standards for all to follow.

The Appian Way is known as Regina Virus, the Queen of Roads, and it got its start in 312 BC, when it was planned by censor Appius Claudius Caecus as a fast road between Rome and Capua to more easily move soldiers. The road was extended over the following decades and centuries, extending as far as Brindisi by 191 BC.

Since its creation, the road has played a major part in the history of the Roman Empire and the world. With connections to such figures as Spartacus, Saint Peter, and a number of emperors of Rome. Traveling down the road you really get a feel for what Rome was like at another time.

We traveled the first seven or so miles of the Appian Way via e-bike, from its historical starting point of the Circus Maximus, past the catacombs and the Church of the Domine Quo Vadis, the Villa of Maxentius, the Tomb of Cecilia Metella, the Villa of the Quintili and more.

While a lot of the historic sights in Rome, Italy can be extremely crowded, join us as we get away from everyone, and enjoy Rome as it once was, via the Appian Way.

We rented our e-bikes from Easy Bike Rent, located across the street from the Circus Maximus on the northwest corner.

Rosslyn Chapel - Secrets of the Templars

The legend of Rosslyn Chapel, located about seven miles from the Scottish capital of Edinburgh, helped to inspire a best selling novel and a block buster movie called The Da Vinci Code. The publicity led to a rebirth of sorts and helped pay for a major restoration that's brought the chapel back to what it looked like when it was built in the mid 1400's. Could it be the final resting place of the Holy Grail? What was the connection to the Knights Templar?

Passage to another world

In eastern Nevada, there is a Gosiute story that this cave is a gateway to an other world with lush fields and many usual animals. Access is not always available to enter this other world, but it is told that a strange people live in there and will take prisoner and make slaves of any who dare to intrude on their realm.

Probably the most famous story about ghosts in Rome is about a young lady called Beatrice Cenci. She was a young aristocrat among the middle of the 16th century. She lived in this house right here.

As the legend goes, her father, Francesco had a bad temper. He beat his kids. He beat his wife. He was known for hanging his head out of the window here and screaming and yelling at everybody.

He had been in jail a few times, but you have to understand he’s an aristocrat. He knew all the Papal authorities. He would not stay in jail for very long. He always came back home at the end of the day.

Now, one day, he took it way too far. At this time, Beatrice went down to the Papal authorities that Francesco knew very well and told on her father. This got back to Francesco. As a punishment, he sent Beatrice, the brothers, and the mom out to the countryside.

One weekend, Francesco went out to visit his family in the countryside. When he went to bed that night, they poisoned him, and then stuck a nail through his throat. They made it even worse by actually putting him on the balcony and throwing him over.

The next morning, the Papal authorities discovered the body and went to investigate what happened. One of the maids in the house told on Beatrice. At that point, everyone went under torture. In the end, they all admitted to their guilt.

Beatrice and her mother were brought to a prison on this street. The people of Rome protested against her being guilty, but Pope Clement VIII was having none of it. On September 11th in 1599, Beatrice and her mother were joined with the other family members and brought to the Bridge of Angels where the scaffolding was set up for their execution.

After that, Beatrice became a symbol of the resistance against the aristocracy of Rome. Legend has it that on the anniversary of her death, you can actually see her walking on this bridge with her head literally in her hands.

Our next story about haunted Rome is about Pimpaccia, the ghost on the flaming chariots. Her name was Olimpia Maidalchini. She was a young girl, around 20 years old when she married her first husband.

He didn’t last very long and she became a very rich widow. She was even more ambitious after this and married Pamphilio Pamphili, who happened to be the brother of the Cardinal who was about to become Pope Innocent X.

Unfortunately, since Pamphilio was also 30 years her senior, he died soon after. At this point, she found herself in the center of Roman society with the Pope. She actually became his right-hand woman.

As legend goes, the night before the Pope actually died, she went and took two big cases full of gold, stuffed it into the carriage and ran off, never returning to Piazza Navona again.

In the 1600s, there was no free press. Everything was controlled by the Vatican. If people wanted the voice their displeasure about something, they would go to one of the so-called talking statues.

This is Pasquino. Whenever people are not happy, they would come to this statue in the middle of the night and put a poem or some satire to voice their displeasure.

We can’t speak about executions without mentioning the main executioner of Rome in the 19th century. His name was Giovanni Bugatti, better known as Mastro Titta. In Roman dialect, they simply called him Er Boja de Roma.

Mastro Titta lived in this apartment, right behind me here. On a side job, when he wasn’t busy executing people, he used to sell painted umbrellas.

Due to his occupation, he was prohibited from going on the other side of the river. The main reason is that relatives would try and seek revenge. The only time this was allowed is when he actually had to execute someone.

When he was crossing, all the people around Rome would say, “Mastro Titta is crossing the bridge.” At this point, everyone knew that an execution was going to take place.

This is Giordano Bruno, an Italian philosopher whose only real crime was that he believed that the earth went around the sun. Pretty simple today, but 500 years ago, this was not what the church thought.

In the end, he was condemned to the heretic and put to death in Campo di Fiori. Today, it’s known as a big party place and a market in the daytime. 500 years ago, this was one of the main areas for executions. As a memory to him, you can see an actual statue still standing for him today.

Co-Owner of The Tour Guy, Sean Finelli, explains what to see and do around the Vatican City.

Rome is an amazing city comprised of many different neighborhoods. They say that six million people per year go to the Vatican City, inside the Vatican museums alone. Where the crowds go, tourist traps tend to follow. It's really important that you know where to go, what to see, how to see it, where to eat, and obviously, where to drink.

Vatican City consists of the Saint Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums. We recommend reserving tickets beforehand and taking a guided tour of the museums.

We also suggest getting breakfast on the go, visiting the outdoor restaurants on Borgo Pio, and trying the panino at Duecento Gradi. Don't miss visiting Dino e Toni for an authentic Roman dining experience and checking out Ponte Sant'Angelo for its historical significance and excellent viewpoint. Lastly, check out our recommendations for a fantastic gelateria and a one-stop shop for Italian brands.
