Romantic Road, Germany - Travel Video

Founded in 1950 as a tourist project, the Romantic Road is a 460km route through charming German villages. It runs from Würzburg to Füssen.

What's cool about it? It takes you on a journey through a wealth of history, art, cuisine, and Western culture - while the landscape changes along the way from north to south.

As you travel the 29 cities along the route, I can assure you: it is impossible not to fall in love and be fascinated by the almost time travel.

There are other impressive routes in Germany - it is true - such as the Fairytale Route and the Lake District Route. But the Romantic Route is the oldest and most popular (or still the most loved) of them all.

Here's a curiosity: do you know why the Romantic Route has this name?

Because many German romantic poets of the 18th and 19th centuries found their inspiration in the little towns on the route. Not only them, in fact: Walt Disney was also inspired there. Neuschwanstein Castle on the outskirts of Füssen is the starting point for Cinderella's Castle - and the town Rothenburg, in turn, inspired him in the creation of Pinocchio.

The route begins in Wüzrburg and ends in the Bavarian* town of Füssen.About 30 cities make up the Romantic Route in Germany.

The ones that receive the most praise and that we recommend you visit are: Füssen and Schwangau, Halblech, Steingarden, Landsberg Am Lech, Ausburg, Donauwörth, Nordingen, Dinkelsbühl, Rothenburgh o.d.T and Wüzrburg.A little off the beaten track are Heidelberg, Nuremberg and Zuspitze.I love the option of doing roadtrips with the freedom of a rental car. You don't have to worry about schedules, you can stop wherever and whenever you want and really make a trip according to your interests.

Some people say that the Romantic Route is not a well defined route. I think this is because if you ask in Germany where is the Romantic Road - or romantisch estrasse in German - most of the locals will not know the answer. This is because it is really a tourist name, used mainly by foreigners. But it exists and is well defined, yes! However, it is important to note that the Romantic Road in Germany is not a specific road.

It is the union of alternative routes - off the main roads - connecting 29 cities/villages in the country. In both directions of the route there are BRAND LABELS indicating the route from the beginning to the end. Following them is the easiest way to stay on the right track, avoiding the crowded highways and keeping in the time travel mood, passing through small but charming villages. When is the best time to travel the Romantic Road?

The truth is that this trip can be done at any time of the year.

Romantische Straße - Romantic Road

The Romantic Road (German: Romantische Straße) is a theme route devised by promotion-minded travel agents in the 1950s. It describes the 460 kilometres of surface roads between Würzburg and Füssen in southern Germany, specifically in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, linking a number of picturesque towns and castles. In medieval times, part of it was a trade route that connected the center of Germany with the south. Today, this region is thought by many international travellers to possess quintessentially German scenery and culture, in towns and cities such as Nördlingen, Dinkelsbühl and Rothenburg ob der Tauber and in castles such as Burg Harburg and the famous Neuschwanstein.

Nature, culture, art, culinary delights and hospitality on Germany’s oldest and most popular holiday route.

The name Romantic Road expresses what many guests from home and abroad feel on seeing medieval towns or the fairy-tale castle at Neuschwanstein: fascination and the sense of being transported back in time. From Würzburg to Füssen, the Romantic Road opens up a wealth of European history, art and culture to travellers. On the way from north to south, the landscape changes from river valleys, fertile agricultural land, forests and meadows to dramatic mountain scenery: from Würzburg and wine, the Tauber Valley and Rothenburg, via the Ries, Lechfeld and Pfaffenwinkel districts to the castles of King Ludwig.

However, a journey along the Romantic Road offers much more than beautiful countryside and culinary delights. The Romantic Road thrives on the harmony of culture and hospitality, on the unending series of new vistas in polymorphic landscapes, on towns with impressive buildings that have preserved their original appearance over the centuries. Balthasar Neumann designed the Residence in Würzburg. Tilman Riemenschneider is present throughout the Tauber Valley. Carl Spitzweg was fascinated by Rothenburg and Dinkelsbühl. In the Ries district, you can see the history of the earth for yourself. Augsburg bears witness to the Romans and, with the Fuggerei, is distinguished by the first social housing, which dates back to the 16th century. The ’Wieskirche‘, one of the most famous Rococo works of art, is to be found in the Pfaffenwinkel district. Hohenschwangau and, above all, Neuschwanstein, the world-famous castle of Bavarian King Ludwig II, are dreams in stone of bygone times and mark the end of the Romantic Road at the foot of the Bavarian Alps.

If you are travelling by car, mobile home or motorcycle, simply follow the brown signs that link the individual towns along the Romantic Road. Cyclists can follow the green signs of the Romantic Road Long Distance Cycle Trail about 500 km from Würzburg to Füssen. Under the number D9, this route is also part of the German Bicycle Club (ADFC) network of cycle routes. The blue signs mark the long-distance walking trail, a genuine pleasure route of almost 500 kilometres that passes through beautiful countryside and romantic towns and villages. Take time to explore the landscape, art and culinary delights that await you along the Romantic Road. On the way from the River Main to the Alps, you can be sure of discovering a host of extraordinary, inspiring and amazing sights well off the beaten path of mass tourism.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber (Germany) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Germany.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a city located on the Romantic Road and where Germany’s Middle Ages have been preserved right up to the present day.
The huge Röder Gate is one of several entrances to this former free imperial city that is protected by a high wall and massive fortified towers.
From the market square, the Herrengasse leads down to the Burg Gate. In previous centuries a horse market was held there and it was also a much-favoured residential area of the aristocracy. Next to the Herrn Fountain is a Franciscan Church, a spartan mediaeval sacred building with five chapels and numerous tombs along its walls.
One of the city’s most famous views is Plönlein Gate, Siebers Tower and a number of half-timbered buildings. Another strongly fortified gate, the Kobolzeller Gate, is both defiant and powerful at the same time.
Located above theTauber Valley, Rothenburg is, not surprisingly, a very popular tourist destination, a fairytale, picture-postcard city.

Romantic Road Motorhome Tour - Germany - February 2016

A video of my tour of the Romantic Road in Germany by motorhome in February 2016. Includes Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbühl, Nördlingen, Landsberg am Lech, Weiskirche and Füssen.

Driving the Romantic Road in Germany in a motorhome with Dogs. Day 1 - Würzburg.

The Slaws are on their late summer trip around Germany with Billy and Jessie their Lhasa Apso dogs, in their Hobby motorhome Helga @HobbyCaravan
They spent last night on the banks of the Rhine at Camping Park Sonneneck near Boppard.
It's a glorious morning and Mrs Slaw enjoys a run while Slaw pops the drone up over the river and the campsite.
Soon they are on the road to the start of the Romantic Road, the Romantische Strasse, in Würzburg.

They stay off-grid on the stellplatz without electric hook up, but Slaw demonstrates how you can still use your 240v sockets with the EcoFlow River Pro, extra battery and solar panel #portablepowerstation #ecoflow #powergenerator #solarpanelforvan
Follow this link for more information and to purchase EcoFlow products

Into Würzburg they go for a traditional glass of wine on the Alte Main Brücke, followed by a meal and more wine in the town. It's the town Wein Parade and bratwürst and Muller Thurgau is on the menu tonight!
Slaw gets a taste for the sausage and wine ????

Driving the Romantic Road in Germany in a motorhome with dogs. Day 2 - Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

The Slaws are on their late summer trip around Germany with Billy and Jessie their Lhasa Apso dogs, in their Hobby motorhome Helga @HobbyCaravan
They are driving the Romantic Road in Southern Germany and spent yesterday in Würzburg at a Weingut and stayed overnight on a stellplatz.

The weather turns today and it's a rainy visit to Tauberbischofsheim where Slaw meets a long lost Dublin cousin (????) - Christian Sullivan who owns the Klosterhof Cafe and Bistro.

When they arrive at Rothenburg ob der Tauber it's torrential rain and this jeopardises the highlight of the day!

After F1 quali, the rain bates and the Slaws head into town to the Imperial City Medieval Festival. It's a fabulous occasion, only slightly marred by the dreadful weather ????

It doesn't stop the Slaws enjoying themselves though with beer, bratwurst and a St Bernard's waltz. Where is Angela when Mrs Slaw needs her ????

How to do the Romantic Road, Germany//2 Days on the Romantic Road

The Romantic Road in Germany is a classic tourist attraction filled with upwards of 20 German towns of a variety of sizes with all sorts of attractions. Whether you have heard of it or not, we did 2 days along the road and learned some things along the way. We actually had a lot more fun than we thought we would and fell head over heels in love with this portion of Germany.

Romantic Road (Germany) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Thousands of years of history is experienced by those who travel Germany’s Romantic Road with its world famous historic cities, fortresses and palaces, from Würzburg to Neuschwanstein Castle. The picturesque Baroque town of Würzburg is located on the River Main amid the Franconian wine region and is dominated by the mighty Marienberg Fortress. The Celts created a fortress that subsequent rulers gradually extended and the oldest church in Franconia, including a massive watchtower, continues to be protected by several huge walls. Tauberbischofsheim is one of the oldest cities in the popular Tauber Valley that was once completely walled. Missionary bishop, Boniface, founded Germany’s first women's monastery in Germany in 735 A.D. and installed a family member, Lioba, as abbess, who tutored the daughters of the nobility and the Free Francs. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is where Germany’s Middle Ages have been preserved up to the present day with huge entrance gates and high walls that lead into the former imperial city.
In 1868, Bavarian King Ludwig The Second had a dream come true in Allgäu, southern Germany: Castle Neuschwanstein, the realisation of his amazing world of fantasy.
This fairytale castle was in construction for seventeen years and in every way the idyll of ancient German knighthood.
The wealth of occidental history, art and culture makes a journey on the Romantic Road a most fascinating adventure into the past. A dream journey through a country and its history.
