Romania - Village Life in Maramures and a day on the Mocanita

x

Romania - Village Life in Maramures and the narrow gauge steam train, the Mocanita

A lovely little 2019 documentary of life in rural Maramures, a district in northern Romania, where life is un-hurried, pastoral and green. Everyone was making hay, beautiful, herb and flower-filled, heaven-scented hay. Some was piled onto wooden racks to dry, some piled onto small haystacks ready for the winter.
Horse drawn vehicles are a common sight, loaded with logs, hay and people. Sheep and cattle wear tinkling bells and every small farm has a pig or two.
A trip up the Vaser valley on the Mocanita steam train, the last working timber railway in Europe, was very special and not without excitement in the form of a derailment!
We pedalled around on bicycles, at a gentle pace, soaking up the gorgeous scenery, wonderful country smells and happy smiles.
All filming was with my much-travelled, hand-held Panasonic HC X920.

LIFE IN A TRADITIONAL ROMANIAN VILLAGE IN BREB ???????? UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE! (????: Maramures, Romania)

Breb has to be added to your Romania itinerary!

The Maramures region in Romania is so beautiful! We really have to go back and explore more if it. Breb is one of those places where time goes by slower and you are forced to enjoy the little things. We loved walking the 'streets' of Breb, saying hi to everyone, playing with every single animal we crossed paths with, learning about their culture and values and just being there... it may sound strange, but even though you're obviously a tourist, it feels like you're a part of something. And it's very special ????

It's fascinating to us to learn and see how other people live. It really changes you. And it's the best part of traveling ❤️

Thanks for being here guys! We can't believe we're almost done with the Romania videos :(

If you have any questions, please let us know. We mean that! We're always happy to help!

XO,
Aimara & Gordon

Romania, Village Life in Transylvania

A beautiful little documentary of village life in Gyimes, in the South Eastern Carpathians in 2018. Ancient, vernacular, small farm-houses line the stoned side roads on which horse-drawn vehicles carry logs, hay, stone and people this way and that all day long. Most people live by small-scale farming producing their own honey, cheese, bread, veg and fruit, milk and meat. Water is always from the well, pure, sparkling and cold. Cows and sheep wear bells and high above the village the mountain meadows hum with insect life while the extraordinarily rich flora remains untouched by sprays and chemicals.
Szekler people, Romania's Hungarian speaking minority live in Gyimes, which now lies within Bacau county. The history of the area and its association with Transylvania, is very complicated .... I am no historian and apologise for any errors I have made.
Enjoy the film, all taken with a little, hand-held Panasonic HC X920.

Village life in Romania

At least once a year I try to visit my grandmother that lives in Romania.
She lives in a small village called Popesti and its surrounded by a river and mountains. They still drive carriages with horses, collect water from the well and the roads are unpaved.

This time I visited the village with questions. Does everybody feel the same serenity that I feel? Or maybe its just a fairy-tale that I created in my mind because I am here for just a short time and then I will leave again.

I believe this video will make you experience the authentic life of Romania through the stories and feelings of locals.

Village Life in Romania, Maramures ????????

#villagelife #romania #românia

A lovely experience in rural Maramures, a region in the north of Romania, one of the last well preserved traditional village areas in Romania. . The village is kept alive by the hand made costumes people are wearing, the hand made pear brandy, the hospitality of the people welcoming you. A trip in Maramures has to inlude the Merry cemetery, the only UNESCO cemetery in the world, where we got to speak with the carpenter who creates the crosses.
One day in the Breb village will make you understand why so many foreigners chose to call this village their home.
The villlage life in Maramures is calm and unhurried, full of wonderful scenery and mistery places where your car will even run uphill with the engine turned off.

Romania, Transylvania Hay Camp 2015 Part 3

Watch traditional hay-making in Gyimes, Transylvania, where flower-filled hay meadows are cut with scythes and raked with Uncle Viktor's hand-made, wooden rakes before the hay is brought down to the village on horse-drawn carts. Horses and people work hard in this unspoilt village of traditional wooden houses and stoned roads. A colourful village festival highlights the sense of community and tradition.

Breb - Magical village in Maramures Romania ????????

Blog article describing my complete Romania road trip in detail:

Detailed article about the hike to Creasta Cocosolui:

The Maramures region had always been pretty much on the top of my list when I was planning my Romania road trip. The more research I did, the more excited I got about it! Whenever I travel I'm looking for authentic experiences and in the Maramures there are plenty.

When looking for a nice hub to travel around from I marked Breb as my main place of interest. Because, as usual, I book accomodation pretty late. Everything that was a bit affordable seemed to be sold out in Breb. I decided to look around in one of the other towns around and noticed that Ocna Sugatag seemed a good alternative at only 10 minutes driving from Breb.

In this video I visit the Maramures region in Romania and I will show you what to do in Breb and the surrounding area.

Discover Maramures - Probably the Most Beautiful Area of Romania !

Private Guided Tour in Maramures, Transylvania - HERE

(Video filmed at The Village Hotel from Breb Village)

Maramures is all about the land, the ancient way of life and the people. Everywhere you look, creates images in your mind, of fairytales!
Maramures is the northern part of Transylvania, known as 'The Land Beyond the Forest

The land, gently undulating, is covered with hills and valleys, rivers and haystacks; ways of farming unchanged for centuries. Working the fields by hand, using scythes and rakes, hoes, axes and other medieval farming implements. Cartloads, stacked high and wide,
pulled by horses, bring the harvests home. Roads winding through hills and valleys... not a motorway to be seen, in
this county! Here are few fences, animals free to graze, tended only by local old folks or shepherds.
What an image!

An abundance of fruit and nut trees Bushes bursting with wild berries, to help yourselves to, whilst rambling through the fields and woodlands.
Hike through ancient forests, following footprints of bears, wild cats and boars.

You'll find four proper seasons in Maramures. Beautiful spring, showered in blossom, after a snow covered, freezing winter. Long, hot summer days, with beautiful starry nights, followed by a rich and glorious array of colours, in the Autumn.

Maramures is famous for its wooden architecture. Tall spires of the traditional wooden churches can be seen from a distance, often built on top of a hill, in the middle of the village. Old traditional wooden houses with shingle roofs. Ornately carved, entrance gates... even a cemetery, where the headstones are hand carved, depicting the lives of people deceased!

Village people, who's lives revolve around subsistence farming are hard working, but lead a healthy lifestyle.
It is difficult to imagine '1st world' stress here; there is little evidence of consumerism, in the rural areas. Where nothing, is more important than 'family'. The older generations, are revered and still have a purpose in life. Every family member, no matter how old or young, gets involved with day to day household and farming chores.

Neighbours...discuss and gossip.. over the garden fence, in the streets or out in the fields, the daily happenings, no matter how insignificant. Families and friends gather for 'entertainment', usually at home, to spend time together and share their stories. Always.. there is food on the table and a bottle of palinca! Most of all, they are known for there genuine hospitality. You can expect a warm welcome and often an invitation to join for warm donuts, and a small glass of Palinca!

In our latest video we say our goodbyes in Hungary after an incredible time visiting Budapest, the capital city and Hortobagy National park where we stayed with a local Horseman and his wife. Before we leave, we delve in to an abandoned military barracks and try to reach the tower, but once inside, we find we aren't alone.

As we leave Hungary, the border station decide they aren't happy with our friends Canadian passport, and they hold us for investigation. Will ever leave?! Spoiler, yes we will. As we enter Romania, our memories of this beautifully crazy country come flooding back. We make a brief stopover in Cluj Napoca, the capital of the Transylvanian region of Romania.

As we enter the second half of the travelogue, we arrive at an old friends house. Tibi is from the Romani community in Romania, a separate ethnic group thought to originate from the Punjab region of India over 3000 years ago.

He warmly invites us in to his home where we eat a feast of traditional foods, before cranking the music up and introducing us to Romani music and dance. We explore the village, meet the locals, hear stories, learn traditional basket weaving from one of the villages oldest weavers and drink plenty of Rakia!

Join us as we experience authentic Roma life, from a completely honest viewpoint. Witness the effects social stigma plays in modern life for Romani people, and the warmth and hospitality the villagers display, despite the obvious language and social barriers.
If you’d like to know more about Romani life and would yourself like to visit the village of Serbia or Romani villages across Romania, please contact us for details.

We hope you enjoy and as usual, let us know what you think in the comments.

A little about us...

We’re Lucy and Ben, two photographers from Cornwall, UK who’ve been living and travelling in our self-converted LDV Convoy camper van for the best part of four years. We’ve travelled all across Europe from West to East documenting our encounters with the people we meet as well as our own travels and adventures. We embrace the ethos of slow travel and minimal living, generally spending between 2 and 8 weeks in each country, getting to know each culture, cuisine and people as though we were locals ourselves as well as hiking, wild swimming and camping as we go.

We are currently on our third 7 month long road trip, travelling through the Balkans for the second time beginning in the French Alps and venturing as far East as Turkey, visiting 13 countries in between.

Our plan was simple: visit every country in Europe in our rusty tin can of a van. So far we’ve made it to 28 countries, travelling as far West as Portugal and as far East as Ukraine, having all sorts of crazy adventures in between.

Our main motivation for our travels is to capture photos and create documentary projects, so our van is primarily a vessel for our photography. We tend to focus on topics such as nomadism, traditional ways of life, the effects of recent political events and the difficulties of living in remote rural areas as well as documenting our own adventures and lifestyle on our various social channels.

Maramures: WWII Resistance & Romania's Heartwarming Beauty ????????

???????? Delve into the lesser-known history of Romanian villages in Maramures during WWII, where the resilience of the people faced unimaginable challenges. On August 23rd, 1944, as Romania switched sides in the war, villages like Moisei in Maramures suffered massacres at the hands of Axis forces. Join me in this episode of Romanian Dream as we honor the sacrifices made by the heroes of these villages. Our exploration continues through the picturesque Maramures, visiting Borsa, Botiza, Viseu de Sus, and experiencing the last operating steam train in Europe, Mocanita. The day concludes in the charming village of Botiza, where I encounter the warmth of locals and witness a true Romanian village wedding.

Exploring The Village Life Of Old Romania

My time in Bucharest had been extended due to a rail strike. Searching for things to do to fill my time, I discovered the Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum, an ethnographic museum devoted to Romanian village life. All the Romanian houses contained within the museum are original. They have been moved from all over the country to their new home in this popular museum in Bucharest. This video also contains possibly the biggest mosiac I had seen so far and a wonderful children's choir singing Christmas songs for their proud parents and families.

----------------------------------------------------

After 18 months of a life on pause, thanks to the sodding corona virus, and endless hours on Google Maps checking out all the places I want to visit, the time has finally arrived to begin my travels in Europe.

Starting in Berlin, I plan to travel east as far as Georgia and taking in pretty much all of the countries in between.

I will be vlogging my way through Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Moldova, Turkey and probably many more.

Join me from the start of my journey so you can say you were there right from the start :)

Aventura in tinutul Maramuresului | Manastirea Barsana si Sapanta, Cimitirul Vesel, Sighet, Mocanita
