ESCADARIA SELARÓN Walking Tour - LAPA RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL [ 4K UHD - 60 FPS ]

SELARÓN STAIRCASE FAST TIPS ????????????

Every weekend the streets of Lapa get full of people, bars, restaurants and clubs are packed! Lapa is also famous for one of Rio postcards: Lapa Arches.

Santa Teresa is another neighborhood close by the Staircase. It’s an artistic neighborhood full of restaurants, art galleries and beautiful architecture. My recommendation is to visit Parque das Ruinas. From there you will have amazing views over Rio de Janeiro! Rio’s historical center lays also very close by above mentioned attractions. The central area is one of the few areas of Rio, where you can still see colonial buildings and cobblestone streets! The zone is full of history and interesting curiosities.

???? ABOUT THE PLACE

The Selarón Staircase, located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is a vibrant and captivating work of art that has become a symbol of the city's cultural heritage. Created by the Chilean-born artist Jorge Selarón, the staircase is a testament to his passion, dedication, and love for both art and Rio de Janeiro.

The staircase is situated in the bohemian neighborhood of Lapa, connecting the neighborhoods of Santa Teresa and Lapa. What was once a dilapidated and forgotten set of steps transformed into a mesmerizing mosaic masterpiece, thanks to Selarón's tireless efforts. With over 2,000 tiles from more than 60 countries, the staircase is a stunning tribute to the unity and diversity of cultures from around the world.

Selarón began the project in 1990 as a personal endeavor, but it quickly gained attention and support from locals and tourists alike. He spent years collecting tiles, ceramics, and mirrors from various sources, meticulously arranging them to form intricate patterns and designs. Selarón himself became an integral part of the artwork, often seen passionately working on the steps, his vibrant personality matching the colorful mosaic he was creating.

As the staircase gained international recognition, it became a must-visit destination for visitors to Rio de Janeiro. The vivid colors, eclectic designs, and the sheer scale of the artwork create a visually stunning and immersive experience. The Selarón Staircase has been featured in numerous films, music videos, and even the Olympic torch relay during the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.

Unfortunately, the legacy of Selarón was marred by tragedy. In 2013, he was found dead on the staircase, leaving behind a profound sense of loss. Despite his passing, the Selarón Staircase continues to be a testament to his artistic genius and his unwavering passion for creating a cultural landmark that would capture the hearts of people from all walks of life.

Today, the staircase stands as a living monument, attracting thousands of visitors who come to admire its beauty, take photographs, and reflect on the remarkable story behind its creation. The Selarón Staircase serves as a reminder of the power of art to transcend borders, unite communities, and leave a lasting impact on the world.

????????‍♀️ SAFE PLACE: ⭐⭐⭐ (Three Stars)

PS: Choose to walk along the Selarón Staircase during the day as it will guarantee a better experience of viewing the artworks contained in this place. If you decide to explore the nightlife of Lapa, a bohemian neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, be vigilant with your purse and smartphones. Unfortunately, the area is known for thefts and robberies. Always walk in groups and take good care of your drink and belongings.

00:00 Overview
00:35 Ride the Cable Car up Sugarloaf Mountain (Pao de Açúcar) in Guanabara Bay
Sugarloaf Mountain is one of Rio's most prominent landmarks. This centerpiece to Rio’s UNESCO World Heritage designation not only looks amazing from the ground, but also offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape from its nearly 400 meter peak.
01:12 Take the train to Christ The Redeemer Statue (Christo Redentor)
Christ The Redeemer is the world famous statue atop Corcovado in the Tijuca National Forest. It’s one of the 7 Wonders of the World and is probably the first thing people picture when they think of Rio de Janeiro. While you can reach the 710-meter summit a few ways, including a strenuous hike, the best option might be taking the Corcovado Rack Railway from Cosme Velho.
02:00 Visit the magnificent beaches: Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Barra de Tijuca & more
Rio de Janeiro has some of the most stunning beaches in the world. Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon & Barra da Tijuca and just a few of the many magnificent beaches. Play beach volleyball or foot-volley, enjoy the Atlantic waters or simply people watch as you soak up the sun. There are both roadside food vendors & folks walking up & down the beach selling shrimp skewers, corn, coconut water, caipirinhas & more, so you’ll find plenty to eat & drink at the more touristy beaches.
02:47 Explore the sprawling Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden (Jardim Botânico)
The enormous 350-acre garden is home to thousands of species of plants from all over the world, including orchids, cacti, fruit trees and over 900 types of palm trees. You can explore the Japanese garden, the Amazonian section, a bee sanctuary and the famous row of massive palm trees.
03:30 Hike some of Rio's majestic mountains like Dois Irmoas, Pedra da Gávea & Pedra Bonita
04:25 Visit the Lapa neighborhood's Selarón Steps (Escadaria Selarón) & Carioca Aquaduct.
04:59 View the cityscape from the observation deck at Mirante Dona Marta
05:22 Visit Flamengo Park (aka Aterro do Flamengo, Eduardo Gomes Park, and Aterro do Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes)
Flamengo Park is one of the largest seaside parks in the world & is popular with both locals & tourists. The park has beaches, lakes, soccer fields, basketball courts, tennis courts and even a skatepark. It’s home to a variety of trees including coconut, mango & palm trees and is a favorite for birdwatchers. Flamengo Park is also where you’ll find Rio’s Modern Art Museum, Municipal Theater and Cultural Center.
05:56 Tour some of Rio's culturally enriching museums: Museum of Tomorrow, the National Historical Museum, Copocabana Fort, Rio’s Aerospace Museum, the Fevela Museum, the Brazilian National team museum among many others. (Museu do Amanhã, Museu Histórico Nacional. Forte de Copacabana / Museu Histórico do Exército, Museu Aeroespacial, Museu de Favela, Museu Seleção Brasileira - CBF)
06:19 Watch a match at Maracanã Stadium (Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho)
Maracana stadium famously hosted world cup and Olympic matches, as well al the local Rio football clubs Flamengo, Batafogo and Fluminense.
06:39 Partake in the Carnival festivities (Sambódromo, Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí)
07:24 Explore Tijuca National Park & Forest (Parque Nacional da Tijuca)
Tijuca is one of the largest urban forests in the world & contains several rivers, waterfalls, mountains and caves, along with hundreds of species of animals & over 1000 species of plants.
07:52 Visit the Lagoon District (Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas)
It’s one of the most expensive neighborhoods in South America. The Lagoon District is home to luxury hotels, restaurants, and shops. It is also home to a number of cultural attractions, like the Museum of Image and Sound and the Parque da Cidade.
08:30 Take a Favela Tour
Favela tours in Rio de Janeiro are controversial. Some think they're exploitative and unethical, while others think they're a way to learn about the favelas and support the local community & economy. Some tours focus on the history and culture of the favelas, while others focus on the social and economic challenges locals face. If you're considering taking a favela tour, it's important to do research and choose a reputable tour operator, ideally a local. Not all favelas or favela tours are equal, but they all carry potential risks. That said, a proper favela tour can be a culturally enriching experience.
09:09 Take a helicopter tour
If you can swing the price, a helicopter tour of Rio De Janeiro is an unforgettable experience.

Our visit Rio De Janeiro travel guide documentary, before the Olympics of 2016, covers some of the top attractions including a food guide (best restaurants and street food), top museums and Rio at night. We also cover off-the-beaten-path activities you won't find in a typical Rio De Janeiro tourism brochure or Rio De Janeiro, Brasil city tour.

25 Things to do in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil Travel Guide and Top Attractions Transcript:

First up, we started with the city’s most iconic sight: Christ Redeemer. We boarded the train as soon as the station opened and made our way to the top of Corcovado Mountain. Sometimes the statue can be shielded by fog, but we lucked out with beautiful blue skies and panoramic views of the city as far as the eye could see.

For a bit of colour, we headed over to the Selaron Steps, which is a tiled staircase created by Chilean artist, Jorge Selarón. Initially Selaron would scavenge construction sites looking for tiles, but in later years as his work gained notoriety, travellers began donating tiles.

Since we chose to stay in the neighbourhood of Ipanema, we ended up spending quite a bit of time at Ipanema Beach. We noticed that this beach was really popular for beach football, volleyball, and surfing. And of course, what makes this beach so iconic are its two mountains, known as Dois Irmãos. If you come here on a clear day, you can catch a killer sunset.

No visit to Rio de Janeiro would be complete without heading up Sugarloaf Mountain, so when the skies finally cleared that’s exactly what we did. We paid for our tickets and boarded the cable car for a somewhat unnerving ride up. If you’re scared of heights, this probably isn’t the attraction for you, however, if you manage to make it to the top you get some really cool panoramic views of Rio.

Copacabana Beach is the most famed beach in all of Rio de Janeiro and if you were to visit on a weekend during the summer months you’d find that the place is packed beyond belief. We happened to be here in winter so things were a lot more relaxed, but that didn’t stop visitors from braving the waters.

We did a favela tour to Babilônia and Chapéu Mangueira. On our tour we saw lots of street art, learned about life inside a favela.

And that is a wrap! We hope this video will give you guys some ideas of things to do in Rio de Janeiro on your visit, and for those travellers who have already been there, feel free to add your suggestion of cool activities and attractions in the comments below.

Rio de Janeiro - City Video Guide

Rio de Janeiro, is situated in southeast Brazil.

Each dawn reveals golden shores, and a city dotted with mountain peaks.
Cariocas, as the residents are known, take pride in living life to the fullest.

The city's Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Sebastian is modeled after a Mayan temple, a stairway to the sun. Christ the Redeemer takes center stage on Rio's skyline. Take the 20-minute ride to the top of Corcovado Mountain, and stand at the feet of this world-famous landmark. Just across the water lays Rio's most iconic peak, Sugarloaf Mountain.

Rio's most famous beach is Copacabana. If you are looking for waves, head out to Prainha. In Ipanema, don't miss the Sunday Hippie Fair.

In the heart of the city, Cinelândia, is home to the Municipal Theater and the National Museum of Fine Arts. Closer to the port is the National History Museum. Visit the Maracanã Football Stadium for a taste of the national obsession -- football!

Explore elegant public parks, such as Parque Henrique Lage and Quinta da Boa Vista. Walk the colorful Selarón Steps, created from tiles donated from all over the world.

No wonder they call Rio de Janeiro the Cidade Maravilhosa, the marvelous city.

RIO DE JANEIRO ???????? | cinematic travel video

Rio de Janeiro, Brasil (Brazil), cinematic adventure travel video.

We arrived about a week prior to the 2016 Olympic Games, and took advantage of the relative calm before the storm by seeing Cristo Redentor, Sugarloaf Mountain, Santa Teresa via the tram, Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, Tijuca National Park, Jardim Botanico, downtown Rio and the waterfront district, and Ilha Grande.

You can see all of Rio from Cristo Redentor, and we were fortunate enough to witness it both day and night. Buffet lunch at Confeitaria Colombo in downtown was a nostalgic experience. And taking the historic Santa Teresa bonde or tram from downtown to Santa Teresa was definitely worth the forty or so minute wait. We also went hang gliding with Konrad Heilmann's Rio Hang Gliding School ( The closest experience we'll probably ever have to soaring like a bird.

We stayed at Casa Caminho do Corcovado ( on the top of a hill and at the feet of Cristo Redentor. It was centrally located, close to buses, the hosts were warm and accommodating, and the views, with the jungle to your back, were phenomenal. Ask them for some great dining recommendations too.

Footage includes Copacabana Beach, Santa Teresa Bonde (tram), Ipanema and Leblon beaches, Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer), Escadaria Selaron, a Capuchin monkey, slack lining, footvolley, Ilha Grande, a Marmoset monkey, Pao de Acucar (Sugarloaf Mountain), Jardim Botanico, a little samba, and lots of hang-gliding!

Special thanks to Casa Caminho do Corcovado ( Rio Hiking ( and Rio Hang Gliding ( More links on my travel blog:

Visiting Brazil. Evening at Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Wow! I'd never thought of visiting Brazil but with a good deal on a tour package and Alison wanting to tick off the last of the seven wonders of the world with the Christ the redeemer statue it seemed like a reasonable destination. A British Airways flight took us to Rio de Janeiro where we had a great time on Copacabana and Ipanema beaches - I nearly drowned at the latter - and we visited many of the sights as well as hangliding over Rio which was fantastic. Visits included maracana stadium, christ the redeemer statue, christo redentor, sugarloaf mountain, pao de acucar, copacabana beach, ipanema beach, videgal favela, dois irmaos, arpoador beach, Escadaria Selarón , celaron steps, discovering cachaca in the form of numerous very strong caipirinhas! we then moved to the historical town of Paraty for a few days before heading off to finish our stay with a few days on the beautiful island of Isla Grande where our downfall was scuba diving with some people who we later met up with for dinner. This culminated in a 3am caipirinha drinking session with many argentinians amongst the local brazilian island people! It was marvellous but what a hangover! Diving and walking around we saw spotted eagle ray . and turtles too. A fantastic trip and one of my favourite ever - not bad considering I wasn't that fussed beforehand...
