Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras: Batad, Bangaan and Banaue [Amazing Places 4K]

Possibly the oldest and some of the most beautiful Rice Terraces in the world are in the Philippine Cordilleras, they are known as Iffugao Rice Terraces or Banaue Rice Terraces. This UNESCO World Heritage Site includes 5 clusters of terraces, Batad being the most famous. Quote from UNESCO World Heritage Centre: For 2,000 years, the high rice fields of the Ifugao have followed the contours of the mountains ..., they have helped to create a landscape of great beauty that expresses the harmony between humankind and the environment.

Recorded end of March 2018 in 4K Ultra HD with Sony AX100.

HIDDEN RICE TERRACE PARADISE - Batad by drone (Philippines)

Visit for more travel guides & tips, photos & videos!
Aerial movie shot with Mavic at Batad, one of the worlds most beautiful rice terraces. I dedicated 11 days to this top location in the Philippines. Didn’t plan it like that, but since mother nature didn’t cooperate, having to deal with 4 brownouts of 1-2 days each and then having my drone land by itself on the edge of rice field and drying 3 days in a bag of dry rice, it all took a bit longer to capture the footage I was after. Nevertheless I had a wicked time and shot tons of photos and timelapses. Don’t miss the timelapse movie!

Banaue Rice Terraces, Ifugao - June 2022 [4K]

These are terraces that were carved into the mountains of Banaue, Ifugao, in the Philippines, by the ancestors of the Igorot people. The terraces are occasionally called the Eighth Wonder of the World. It is commonly thought that the terraces were built with minimal equipment, largely by hand. The terraces are located approximately 1,500 metres (4,900 feet) above sea level. These are fed by an ancient irrigation system from the rainforests above the terraces. It is said that if the steps were put end to end, it would encircle half of the globe.

Locals up to this day still plant rice and vegetables on the terraces, although more and more younger Ifugaos do not find farming appealing, often opting for the more lucrative hospitality industry generated by the terraces. The result is the gradual erosion of the characteristic steps, which require constant reconstruction and care.

THE RICE TERRACES OF IFUGAO PROVINCE, PHILIPPINES - AERIAL VIEW-LUZON TOURIST ATTRACTION -BANAUE

THE RICE TERRACES OF IFUGAO PROVINCE, PHILIPPINES - AERIAL VIEW-LUZON TOURIST ATTRACTION -BANAUE

The Rice Terraces of the Cordilleras – the pride of the Ifugaos

Located at the foot of the Cordillera mountain ranges, lies the province of Ifugao. And whenever Filipino locals hear the word Ifugao, the striking image of the Rice Terraces (also known as Mga Hagdang-Hagdang Palayan) comes to mind. These terraces are reported to cover around 4,000 miles and its length is roughly half of the Earth’s circumference – approximately 12,500 miles.

Ancestors of the Ifugao tribe carved thousands of these step-like terraces in the mountains with their bare hands – thus, creating a beautiful sight that people often refer to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” The Ifugao tribe belongs to the bigger group of the Igorots, which comprises numerous tribes in the northern part of the country. They are popularly known as rice cultivators and their tribe has lived on these mountains for more than 2,000 years.

The presence of these historic terraces is said to be among the few monuments that were not influenced by colonial cultures. Since the Igorots lived in the mountains, they were not reached by Spanish or American colonizers because of the difficult terrains. Hence, they were able to retain their customs, culture and traditional practices.

According to historical accounts, it is believed that the Rice Terraces have been carved by the Ifugaos between 1,000 to 2,000 years ago. Despite conflicting records, some reports mentioned that their terracing practice began with taro cultivation (which was later replaced by rice). To carefully carve the contours of the mountains and construct these terraces, they had to use stone or mud walls. Such practice was handed down from generation to generation yet according to reports, there were no written records on how they structurally built the terraces. Apart from that, they also established an irrigation system to water these terraces.

Philippines Travel Vlog | Visiting Hapao Rice Terraces and Hot Spring! This is AMAZING!

Hey Guys! Welcome and in this Philippines travel vlog, I am going to visit Hapao rice terraces & hot spring. This is my first travel with my LDR girlfriend after arriving in Philippines.

▶️ Please Subscribe:

Special thanks to my guide Marvin. If you plan to visit the area near Banaue feel free to check him out.

Banaue has been preserving the Philippines' indigenous people's generations-old traditions for decades, making it a must-see destination for those seeking an authentic countryside experience. It also provides a variety of activities, such as visiting a museum and an ethnic hamlet, as well as taking in the natural beauty of falls and hot springs, to name a few.

These rice terraces are remarkable in that they are the longest but also the simplest to trek due to their mild slopes. The terraces are built out of solid stone walls that extend up to 20 feet in height. Its view deck is situated very next to the road, making it easy to take in the stunning scenery.

Hapao Rice Terraces also offers peaceful views of mountain streams, a river in the center of the route, and Hapao Hot Springs to unwind in. Hiring a local guide who can teach you more about Hungduan, its people and culture, as well as some secret sites hidden in the hills, can make the hike more unforgettable.
