97-year-old Parachutist Tom Rice jumps on 75th D-Day anniversary

Tom Rice, 97, from San Diego, California, was among some 200 parachutists who filled the Normandy skies of France for the 75th anniversary of the invasion as they leapt from vintage C-47 Dakota planes in what was a moving sight. They were honouring the airborne soldiers who jumped into gunfire and death ahead of the June 6, 1944, seaborne invasion. Their engines throbbing, the C-47 transporters dropped group after group of parachutists. Mr Rice jumped in a tandem into roughly the same area he landed in on D-Day near Carentan, a town among the main targets for the paratroopers. He said: 'It went perfect, perfect jump. I feel great. I'd go up and do it all again.' They jumped from the C-47s in Second World War colours and other aircraft, aiming for fields of wild flowers on the edge of the town.

A living cultural landscape is nestled into the remote slopes of the Cordillera mountain range in the Philippines. It serves as an example of sustainable agriculture with traditional techniques. For 2,000 years the mountains of Ifugao province have been cultivated with terraced fields that climb thousands of feet.

These fields, and the knowledge to farm them, have been passed down from generation to generation for centuries. They have long been central to the survival of the Ifugao peoples but they also occupy a central importance within their culture. Entire communities cooperate on seasonal systems of planting, pest control, and harvest. The coordinated efforts are tied to lunar cycles and sometimes accompanied with religious rituals.

The UNESCO site encompasses five different clusters of rice terraces in the area. The Banaue Rice Terraces are the most famous of the lot. Banaue is approximately 230 miles north of Manila, and buses depart daily from the capital. It can take up to ten hours to make it up the mountainous terrain to the rice fields.

Take a guided hiking tour and make sure to pack a picnic for an outstanding view of this remarkable landscape.

Tasty Tour | Arroz Negro | How restaurant chefs cook Squid Ink Rice | Ran de Mar 2021

Hi guys, thanks for coming to this very first episode of our new series, Tasty Tour. Although it’s including the whole cooking process, it’s not a cooking tutorial technically. However, if you know the basics of cooking, you might be able to cook this at home, except for the secret cause and the homemade fish stock which the chefs couldn’t reveal.

Arroz Negro is a Valencian and Catalan dish made with cuttlefish (or squid) and rice, somewhat similar to seafood paella. Some call it paella negra (black paella), although it is traditionally not called a paella even though it is prepared in a similar manner.

The traditional recipe for this dish calls for squid ink, cuttlefish or squid, white rice, garlic, green cubanelle peppers, sweet paprika, olive oil and seafood broth. However, many cooks add other seafood or different ingredients as well, such as crab, clamp and shrimp.

In this episode, the chef Mamen and Josep did a fantastic job in cooking a very good looking and delicious Arroz Negro. Their restaurant is located by the beach in the lovely town Vendrell.

Rice Pounding in Japan

At an amusement park on New Year's Day, watch as I get upstaged by the park mascot. Then at home, my boys eat two varieties of mochi.

Mochi is a Japanese rice cake made of glutinous rice pounded into paste and molded into shape. Mochi is traditionally made in a ceremony called Mochitsuki. While eaten year-round, mochi is a traditional food for the Japanese New Year and is most commonly sold and eaten at that time.

Mochi is very sticky and somewhat tricky to eat. After each new year, it is reported in the Japanese media how many people die from choking on mochi. The victims are usually elderly. Because it's so sticky, it's difficult to dislodge via the Heimlich maneuver.

Rice is perhaps the most important food in Japan, and knowing how to use a Japanese rice cooker is one of the first things you will need to learn when you are in Japan.

More Japanese food videos, recipes and ideas can be found at:

More information on navigating life in Japan can be found at:

お米 -- Okome -- Rice
Rice is a staple in the Japanese diet, and the most important crop in Japan. While it is absolutely delicious and easy to eat, preparing it is quite another matter.

炊飯器 -- Suihanki -- Rice Cooker
The Japanese use a rice cooker, known as a Suihanki, to cook the rice. When using a rice cooker with Japanese written on the buttons, the task can initially seem daunting. However, it is possible to cook perfect Japanese white rice, or sticky rice, even as a gaijin.

*A Japanese rice cooker may or may not have the same buttons as the one portrayed in this video. However, most rice cookers in Japan will have similar buttons and kanji.

The first thing to do is to rinse the rice. White rice has had its husk removed, and leaves a starchy white film. Rinsing the rice in water will leave a milky-looking cloud of particles that need to be removed before cooking. Thoroughly rinsing the rice three or four times will get the rice ready for cooking.

The following settings and buttons can be chosen on many rice cookers:

The start button:
炊飯 -- Suihan -- Cook Rice

To start the warming cycle:
保温選択 -- Hoon Sentaku -- Warming

To turn the warming setting off:
とりけし -- Torikeshi -- Off

It is possible to set a delay-start timer:
予約 -- Yoyaku -- Timer

In order to change the settings:
メニュー -- Menyuu -- Menu

The following settings may be found on your Rice Cooker:

The setting that is most used:
ふつう -- Futsuu -- Usual

In order to make the rice used to make mochi:
もちもち -- MochiMochi -- Mochi

In order to make rice a little more well done:
しゃっきり -- Shakkiri -- Crisp

If you want to use the express setting:
白米急速 -- Hakumai Kyuusoku -- Express (Rapid Rice)

If you want to save on prep time by adding meat, veggies, seasonings:
炊き込み -- Takikomi -- Mixed Rice

If you will be making sushi:
すしめし -- Sushimeshi -- Sushi Rice

If you will be making porridge:
おかゆ -- Okayu -- Porridge

To make rice steamed with red beans:
おこわ -- Okowa -- Rice w/ red beans

If you want to cook brown rice:
玄米 -- Genmai -- Brown Rice
