4 DAYS IN RHODES, GREECE VLOG: Old Town Rhodes, Faliraki, Gyros and Santa Marina Beach Club

I recently spent four days on the Greek island of Rhodes with a large group of friends, with one of them being a native of the island.

We were taken to the best spots in Rhodes Town, Old Town Rhodes and a trip to Faliraki for some amazing Mexican food. We did of course have the local gyros, souvlaki, mousakka and more during our trip and visited some cool beach bars, restaurants and hidden gems.

This is your guide for everything to do in Rhodes, Greece!

Rhodes Old Medieval Town, Rhodes

When you approach the walls of Medieval Old Town of Rhodes you are about to enter the oldest inhabited medieval city in Europe. It's a thrill to behold. Best to know one thing from the start about the Old Town of Rhodes: It's not laid out on a grid - not even close.

In the Medieval - Old - Town of Rhodes one may for sure enjoy one of the most interesting walks on the island. Do not let the medieval mislead you: rather than a ruined, deserted setting, you will be pleasantly surprised to wander through an intricate network of busy little commercial streets delightfully alternating with quiet alleys, in what is a very much alive town consistently dwelt in over the last two thousand years! No wonder, therefore, that for some time now, the Medieval Quarter of Rhodes - the oldest inhabited medieval town in Europe - forms part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage network!

This is a bustling neighborhood of some 6000 people, who live and work in the same buildings in which the Knights of St. John dwelt, six centuries ago. An emotion certain to remain forever alive on one’s memory!

Medieval buildings, mosques, traditional fountains, oriental motifs, Byzantine and Gothic churches, shops and cafeterias are scattered throughout the Old Town of Rhodes, all blending together to create a unique and picturesque whole. There are roughly 200 streets or alleys - some of them bearing no name! Getting “lost” here is not a defeat; it's an opportunity. Whenever you feel the need to find your bearings, you may ask for Sokratous street, which is the closest the Medieval City comes to having a main street.

The highlights - what to see in the Old Town of Rhodes
The Palace of the Grand Master, reinstated by the Italians in 1940 after almost a century of abandonment (the building had been destroyed as a result of an explosion in a forgotten powder store in its basement, in 1856), stands out because of its imposing entrance and exquisitely well-preserved towers and battlements. The interiors of the buildings, decorated with priceless ornamental objects, are equally impressive.

The Archaeological Museum is housed in the Gothic building of the Great Hospital of the Knights and preserves masterpieces of art on Rhodes, finds from ancient lalysos and Kamiros and mosaic paintings from the city of Rhodes.

The Knight's Street, the imposing street that leads to the Palace of the Grand Master, keeps alive the accommodations of the language of the Order of Knights.

It is worth visiting the Panagia tou Kastrou, the Panagia tou Bourgkou, the clocktower, the synagogue and the mosques of the Suleyman and Recep Pasha.

The medieval city of Rhodes is one of the few remaining medieval cities in the world that is still inhabited and alive. -

Rhodes Island, Greece | 2021 | 4K

The video was recorded during a two-week vacation in the second half of September 2021 on the island of Rhodes and its neighbors - Symi and Halki. The film was made using the DJI Osmo Pocket camera and the DJI Mavic Air drone. This is our second stay in the Dodecanese Islands - we spent our vacation in Kos last year.

Rhodes is the largest island of the Dodecanese, situated at the junction of the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. On the west coast you are on the Aegean Sea, while on the west side of the island you can swim in the calm waters of the Mediterranean Sea. The highest peak of the island of Rhodes is Ataviros with a height of 1215 m above sea level at the foot of which there are many vineyards.

We chose a hotel in the capital of the island of the same name - Rhodes. Thanks to this, we had access to many monuments and tourist attractions, as well as good road connection with the rest of the island. Rhodes is quite big - that's why I decided to divide the movie into four chapters telling about the places we've been to:

00:00 - Rhodes Town
04:44 - West Coast
08:30 - East Coast
12:37 - Islands of Halki and Symi

Rhodes town
There are many monuments from different historical periods here. The most famous is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Medieval City of Rhodes. In the Middle Ages, the island was the seat of the Order of Joanites, which built numerous castles and defensive fortifications on it. The main monuments in the city of Rhodes include the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes and the city walls, as well as the Archaeological Museum, Mandraki Harbor and the Acropolis in the south of the city.

West Coast
There are many historical monuments on the west coast of the island. The largest is Ancient Kamiros - the ruins of a city that was destroyed by an earthquake. On this side of the island there are also ruins of medieval fortresses such as Kritinia Castle and Monolithos Castle. Not far from Rhodes town is Filerimos Monastery, where you can also admire the remains of the ancient village of Filerimos. Going into the interior of the island, you should visit two places - the first is the city of Embonas, which is the wine capital of the island, the second is Siana, which is famous for the production of olive oil, honey and souma. The last attraction worth seeing is the Butterfly Valley - unfortunately the season ended during our stay and there were really few butterflies.

East Coast
The west coast of the island is usually very windy, the water is more wavy and the beaches are mostly rocky. It is completely different on the east coast, where sandy beaches predominate, the water is calm and the weather is less windy. In my opinion, the most beautiful beach on the east coast is Agia Agathi, it is also worth stopping at Tsampika beach. The latter is at the foot of the Monastery of the same name. The East Coast is also perfect for starting your diving adventure - here I can recommend Rhodes Diving Academy - you are the best guys! Of course, there are also many places to visit here. First of all, you must see the city of Lindos with the Acropolis towering over it. It is also worth seeing the thermal baths in Kallithea or a typical Greek building in the town of Koskinou.

Halki and Symi islands
To the north of the island of Rhodes there are two smaller islands - Symi and Halki. They used to be famous for catching sponges, but nowadays the inhabitants mainly live from tourism. Here, attention for enthusiasts of snorkeling - there are the cleanest and quietest waters in the area! I especially recommend the island of Halki, which I would like to come back to :). In Symi, an additional attraction is also the Panormitis Monastery to which pilgrimages from all over Greece take place.

Soundtrack:
Rhodes Town: Aiyo - The Night Is Young ft. Willow
West Coast: Tape Machines - Evergreen Fields
East Coast: Thompson Town Flowers - Fresh From Yard
Islands of Halki and Symi: Tellow, Klara Larsson, COE - I Follow Your Heartbeat

Lastly we go to the Acropolis of Rhodes to check out the ancient ruins. Here we see an ancient stadium, a theatre and the Temple of Apollo. We then head a bit further up the hill to check out the amazing view of the sunset.

ABOUT RHODES
Rhodes, the largest of Greece’s Dodecanese islands, is known for its beach resorts, ancient ruins and remnants of its occupation by the Knights of St. John during the Crusades. The city of Rhodes has an Old Town featuring the medieval Street of the Knights and the castlelike Palace of the Grand Masters. Captured by the Ottomans and then held by the Italians, the palace is now a history museum.

Join us as we uncover the hidden treasures of this sun-soaked island, a true jewel in the Aegean Sea. It's worth mentioning that we traveled to Rhodes about a week after the Rhodes fires were extinguished. All that is to say, you're safe to travel to Rhodes.

Summer holiday in Rhodes town and Lindos, Rhodes, Greece.
Starts with the kids playing on a pirate ship located near where you get the day trip boats from in Rhodes town next to the harbour.

Rhodes is probably the best of the Ancient Greece destinations you can go to.

Followed by a day trip to Lindos (very very very beautiful).
And finally move on to a restaurant in Rhodes Old Town which we absolutely loved.
Rhodes Town is by far the best holiday destination that I've been on for a LONG time.
