Remote Camping at Great Basin National Park!

Lonely and Remote... that's the theme of this video!

From the long, remote highway coming in, to hiking to a solitary glacier, to the 9 miles of gravel to the campsite - this trip was all about getting away from it all. Great Basin National Park is a great place to do just that!

ABOUT US

Welcome to Grand Adventure, a YouTube channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, always filmed in stunning 4K.

We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah during the winter months, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and dog Zoe are avid boondockers, so while you'll occasionally find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds, we're usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. We've now transitioned from long-timing for six months a year, to living and traveling in our RV full-time.

We'll provide beautiful travel videos, as well as some tips and insight on trip planning, and equipping and maintaining your RV to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!

48 Hours in GREAT BASIN NATIONAL PARK!

Two beautiful glaciers and the second highest mountain in Nevada!

Great Basin National Park is one of the least-visited national parks, but in my opinion, it is one of the most impressive for star gazing, tree hugging, glacier views, and challenging hikes. If you are in the area, watch this vlog to find out what you can expect to see in just 2 days.

However you choose to spend your 48 hours in Great Basin National Park, be prepared for a unique experience without the millions of people that Yosemite or Zion National Park welcome each year. Please stay on trails, even to pass others, and respect the wilderness.

Free Dispersed Camping in Great Basin National Park on Snake Creek Road

Coordinates for my camp spot: 38.919117, -114.195733

There are lots of free places down this road. This is inside of the National Park, however, to get to the visitor center, you will have to go back out and drive around. It is about 20 minutes from the visitor center.

GREAT BASIN NATIONAL PARK | where to stay + BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS | USA road trip & travel vlog

Great Basin Camping and Hiking

In this video, we stop by the Bonneville Salt Flats/Speedway to check out this interesting terrain, and then we continue south to go camping and hiking in Great Basin National Park in Baker, Nevada. We also made a stop for lunch in the town of Ely, Nevada on the way in to Great Basin National Park.

Once in Great Basin, we stopped at both visitor centers, although the Lehman Caves Visitor Center was the only one that was open (there is a small gift shop and cafe at this visitor center). We then went to our campground, which was the Upper Lehman Creek campground, and we set up our site.

After thism we went on the Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive, and at the end of this drive we got out and did the Alpine Lake Loop trail. This amazing trail features Stella Lake and Teresa Lake.

After finishing this 2.7 mile round trip, we headed back to our campsite to make dinner and wind down for the evening. Once the sun went down, we took advantage of this International Dark Sky Association park and did quite a bit of stargazing.

This essentially concluded our trip. The next morning, we begin the next leg of our journey by heading east into Utah, where we will visit Goblin Valley State Park, Moab, Utah (including Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park), and we will camp out in Dead Horse Point State Park.

Camping Under the Stars and The Milky Way Galaxy - Great Basin National Park

Short weekend trip to Great Basin National Park. Left Las Vegas Friday night and car camped for the first night. Saturday morning we got lucky as the park has just opened up two Campgrounds (Upper Lehman & Lower Lehman). Due to weather conditions, we were only able to do side Hikes but the goal was Wheeler Peak.

Great Basin National Park - Drive through Upper Lehman Creek Campground

Upper Lehman Creek Campground at Great Basin Nation Park is our pick as the most wooded campground. That and Wheeler Peak Campground.
Though there are very few spots for large Rv's, it is a great spot for tent campers. Loaded with wildlife, we saw deer and wild turkeys, most sites back up to Upper Lehman Creek.

Our First Van Life Snow - Great Basin National Park | Ep. 103

SUPPORT US ON PATREON:

We visit our 25th park of the trip so far, Great Basin National Park! This was the first national park we have visited on our van life road trip where we have been completely boxed out by the snow! We are forced to adapt, and enjoy the park in our own way during our first van life snow.

Traveling is embedded into our relationship as we met on a Spring Break cruise in 2016. Since then, we haven't stopped traveling together in the United States and abroad. We left New York in July 2019 to travel the world and we took work with us, including starting a travel vlog. We have made it our mission to slow travel for 16 months throughout South America and Asia and to create travel videos along the way.

Due to the pandemic, we changed course and bought a van to convert into a campervan (#vanlife) to travel to all 50 National Parks in the lower 48 states (excluding Hawaii and Alaska) before Christmas. We are Brandon and Erin, follow the journey and stay tuned.

Great Basin National Park Best Campsites, NV

Campground sold out? Scan for availability and get an alert when someone cancels a campsite at:

Great Basin National Park encompasses over 77,000 acres and offers the visitors a variety of outdoor recreation activities including hiking/backpacking, fishing, wildlife viewing, picnicking, star-gazing, snow-shoeing, cross-country skiing, biking and much more.

Great Basin National Park Campgrounds

Great Basin National Park has five developed campgrounds including Baker Creek, Lower Lehman Creek, Upper Lehman Creek, Wheeler Peak and Grey Cliffs Group. All of these campgrounds have vault toilets, picnic tables, tent pads, and campfire grills. There are no hookups or leveled parking sites. Each campsite also has a table, fire ring/grill (8 people, 3 tents and 2 vehicles per site).

There is also one primitive campground along Snake Creek Road. Sites have picnic tables and fire rings.

Lower Lehman Creek is the only campground open year round. Other campgrounds are generally open from May until October, weather permitting. Water may not be available early and late in the season, and is not available in the winter at Lower Lehman Creek.

Great Basin National Park Camping - We found the best campsite!

We found the best campsite at Great Basin National Park. Campsite #24 at Upper Lehman Creek Campground. It is Ron the upper Tent Only loop.
You have to pack you stuff in a little bit, but it is definitely worth it.
We reserved it a couple of weeks in advance via Recreation.Gov.

DRIVING SNAKE CREEK ROAD AT GREAT BASIN NATIONAL PARK | HIDDEN CANYON RETREAT | NEVADA

Snake Creek Road at Great Basin National Park in Nevada is runs deep into the backcountry of the park. The unpaved road is 13 miles in length and takes the visitor through Snake Creek Canyon. The Snake Creek Road provide access to multiple trails as well as multiple primitive group and single vehicle campsites. The abandoned Bonita Mine Camp can be found along the side of the road. The mine was opened during WWI to mine tungsten, which was used to strengthen steel. After the war, the price of tungsten dropped, and it was no longer profitable to run the mine and it was abandoned. As you gain elevation on the winding road, the vegetation changes from sage brush to Juniper and Pinyon pines to Aspens and Elderberry trees. If you enjoy solitude, this is a wonderful park of the park.

Hidden Canyon Retreat is in the foothills of eastern Nevada just outside of the east boundary of Great Basin National Park. Also known as Hidden Canyon Ranch, the property sits on approximately 400 acres of beautiful Juniper, Pinyon and sage with a stream running through the property. There is a small motel with 12 rooms, 4 cabins and an outdoor swimming pool. Hidden Canyon Retreat is a great little place to stay near the park.

Great Basin National Park was established on October 27, 1986, by President Ronald Regan. It acquired its name from the unique drainage that occurs in the region of the United States. In this part of the country, the rivers and streams do not drain out to the sea. Instead, they drain into this vast area of the country known as the Great Basin. Great Basin National Park protects over 120 square miles of prime wilderness and is one of the least visited national parks in the United States.

Great Basin National Park Must See Sights

Great Basin National Park is one of the more remote national parks in the lower 48 states, but it's got its unique appeal. Bristlecone Pines, Lehman Caves. and dark sky at night are the main attractions. These attractions with the majestic Wheeler Peak, are well worth the visit, especially given the sparse crowd.
Check out the top, must-see sights at Great Basin National Park in this video.
