The church is 10 meters high and is made of 100 layers and 2000 columns of steel. Depending on the perspective of the viewer, the church may either perceived as a massive building or seems to dissolve - partly or entirely - in the landscape.
Completed in 2011, Reading Between the lines is a project by the duo Gijs Vaerenbergh, a collaboration between young Belgian architects Pieterjan Gijs and Arnout Van Varenbergh

Doorkijkkerk was designed by Belgian architects Pieterjan Gijs and Arnout Van Vaerenbergh and built in 2011. Doorkijkkerk is constructed from 100 stacked layers of weathered steel plates (30 tons) with gaps between them that you can see through, making the church aptly named. Every angle gives you a different perspective of the church, seemingly dissolving into the landscape in one moment and merging into a solid building in the next.

Depending on the perspective of the viewer, the church is either perceived as a massive building, or dissolves — partly or completely — into the landscape.

had a short trip to visit the Doorkijkkerk (reading between the lines church) at Borgloon in the Limburg province of Belgium. the place is specatcular vth amazing landscapes and of course the unique design of the church.

De doorkijkkerk in Borgloon van het Belgische architectenduo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh (Pieterjan Gijs en Arnout Van Vaerenbergh). 'Reading between the Lines' is 10 meter hoog en bestaat uit 100 op elkaar gestapelde lagen staalplaat, in het totaal 30 ton staal en 2000 kolommen, en staat op een fundament van gewapend beton. Door het gebruik van horizontale platen, wordt de idee van een traditionele kerk getransformeerd tot een transparant kunstobject. De speciale constructiewijze zorgt ervoor dat het landschap altijd zichtbaar blijft doorheen de kerk, zowel van op afstand als van dichtbij. De kerk is hierdoor wel aanwezig, maar ook afwezig in het landschap.
Dit kunstwerk maakt deel uit van het PIT project. Een beeldenproject met werk van een tiental kunstenaars in de regio Borgloon-Heers, dat het eerste deel vormt van het tentoonstellingsproject Z-OUT (waarmee het Hasseltse kunsthuis Z33 kunst in de openbare ruimte presenteert).
Weet dat de doorkijkkerk niet te bereiken is met de auto. Best kan die parkeren op de parkings voorzien op de Sint-Truidersteenweg tussen de Grootloonstraat en de Neremstraat. Vanaf daar volg je het bordje met de doorkijkkerk op of de oranje, blauwe, gele of groene wandelroute. Met de fiets is deze weg ook toegankelijk.
