Norfolk Island History

Norfolk Island History firstly summarised by Kathleen, then humourously detailed by Kim, and then detailed by our local historian. This is the story of when #CaptainCook first discovered #NorfolkIsland and thought there would be two valuable products that the British Empire could use; pine trees and flax. Both products were for the advancement of boat-building.

Local Hero on Norfolk Island

Local Hero on Norfolk Island is the incredible story of how we met Julien Vasseur, full time chef and part time climbing hero.
After an extensive process to obtain permission to fly our drone on #NorfolkIsland we managed to crash it into a 50 metre high Norfolk pine tree at #SlaughterBay.
Totally depressed but still trying to enjoy the beauty of Norfolk Island we were invited out to dinner on New Year's Eve, where we met this lovely local lady and told her the story of our drone in the tree directly behind us. Surprisingly she said, you are so lucky, I am one of the few people that knows of the only man on Norfolk Island that climbs trees. She asked for our phone number and said she would get in contact with her friend.
Not expecting anything to come of it, the next morning (which just happened to be New Year's Day) I got a call from this man with a French accent that said Man, it sounds like you need some help.
Half an hour later we met Julien the hero of the story. With a raging hangover and the love of climbing trees, Julien's desire to help these two total strangers kicked in. We were totally blown away with his joy and enthusiasm. A great example of how wonderful the people on Norfolk Island are. We'd also like to thank Rodger, the dude with the cowboy hat whose superman eyesight spotted the drone and guided Julien to rescue it.
We didn't know that Julien was a chef extraordinaire, so we are planning to go back so we can do some cooking classes! Art of Cooking on Norfolk Island.

This video clip is from January 2013, and shows the delicate and amazing work carried out to move the objects of the HMS Sirius ship to it's new museum space. The new museum located in World Heritage Kingston is dedicated to the HMS Sirius, flagship of the First Fleet, wrecked on Norfolk Island in 1790. The objects you’ll see include a one tonne anchor, carronades, cannon balls and delicate pieces from the Officer’s Quarters. HMS Sirius museum is opened Mon-Sat 11.00am - 3.00pm and is a must visit.
