Walking around Old town of Rauma, July 2021, Finland. Town of Rauma was founded in 1442. Old Rauma (Finnish: Vanha Rauma, Swedish: Gamla Raumo) is the wooden city centre of the town of Rauma. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognising its unique character as an outstanding example of a living and well preserved historic Nordic wooden town, of which it is the largest in the Nordic countries..
The area of Old Rauma has approximately six hundred buildings. The town of Rauma expanded outside the Old Rauma proper only in the early 19th century. The neo-renaissance style of many of the houses is a result of prosperity brought on by seafaring. The oldest buildings date from the 18th century, as two fires of 1640 and 1682 destroyed the town. Most buildings are currently inhabited and owned by private individuals.

Unique Old Nordic Wooden Town - Walking in the Unesco World Heritage site of Old Rauma (July 2022)
(4K) Old Rauma is the largest unified historical wooden town in the Nordic countries. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991 because of its unique wooden architecture and its well-preserved medieval town layout.
Old Rauma is an extensive, uniform wood-build town dating back to the Middle Ages. Old Rauma is a living town district where historical heritage lives on in perfect harmony with modern commerce and local residents. You´ll find an ample range of high-quality cafes, restaurants and charming little boutiques there. The idyllic ambience is complemented by museums, lovely gardens, the market place and the impressive medieval Church of the Holy Cross.
The area of Old Rauma is about 0.3 km2, with approximately six hundred buildings (counting both proper houses and smaller buildings like sheds) and about 800 people living in the area. The oldest buildings date from the 18th century, as two fires in 1640 and 1682 destroyed much of the town. However, the layout of the town center still retains much of its medieval structure.

Thunderstorm Walk in Old Rauma, Finland
In this episode we are visiting Rauma. The mercury is hitting 30 degrees Celsius and we can hear a thunderstorm in the distance. But don't you worry, I have my umbrella with me!
Old Rauma (Vanha Rauma) is the wooden centre of Rauma. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991 because of its unique wooden architecture and its well-preserved medieval town layout. It is one of the only medieval towns in Finland.
Our walk begins inside the Church of the Holy Cross, a Franciscan monastery church inaugurated in 1512. We also walk through the narrowest street of Finland called Kitukränn.

Two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Rauma, Finland
