Raohe Night Market in Taipei: MUST-EAT Taiwan Street Food - Pepper Pork Buns & Bone Soup!

Raohe Night Market is one of the best Taiwanese street food night markets in Taipei:

One of the best things to do when you visit Taipei is go around at night and visit the many night markets the city has to offer. While the biggest and grandest night market in Taipei is the famous Shilin Night Market, there are many others. One of the others that I really liked was Raohe Night Market, located on Raohe Street. The market was smaller and friendlier, and along the street they packed in some seriously delicious food. One evening during our visit to Taipei, we headed over to the market in the evening to explore, wander around, and eat some of the must eat things to try at the market. Here are the main things we tried.

Fuzhou Pepper Buns (pork pepper buns)
Without doubt, Fuzhou Pepper Buns (pork pepper buns) is the most famous street food to eat at the Raohe Night Markets - and it’s crazy busy at all times that it’s open. Located right at the entrance of the market, you won’t have any trouble finding it. They are so popular, they even have a line marked out so it may feel like you’re actually standing in line at immigration instead of waiting for food. I ordered the classic pepper pork bun, a circle of dough filled with a pepper marinated mixture of pork, filled with green onions, wrapped into a bun, and then cooked in a tandoor oven. The result was an incredibly delicious bun, topped with loads of sesame seeds. The pork inside was meaty and had a nice salty and slightly sweet flavor, with a good freshness from the green onions. But definitely the bread was the highlight with its crispy and gooey texture all in one. Although the Fuzhou Pepper Buns stall has a long line at all times, it really is worth the wait. It’s most definitely one of the must eat things at Raohe Street Night Market in Taipei.

Grilled Squid
Another one of my favorite Taiwanese street food snacks at night markets is grilled squid, which is typically available from multiple stands throughout any night market. Spotting a squid vendor, we moved in to order some. The squid was first boiled, then grilled, basted in some kind of dark looking teriyaki sauce, and then cut up into slices for eating. It was then topped in some pepper and chili powder. Squid is just an excellent street food night market snack. The squid was fresh and the texture was excellent.

Fried dumplings
Continuing on our tour of must eat food at Raohe Night Market, we continued with a cup of fried dumpling, which were freshly cooked, and golden brown on one side, and then gooey on the top and the middle and filled with a mixture of minced meat and green onions on the inside. The dumplings were then topped with sauce and chilies and served with a skewer for eating. Again, just like many of the dumplings in Taiwan, they were delicious.

Pork bone herbal soup
Another one of the most famous things to eat at Raohe Night Market is the herbal pork bone soup, and there area number of restaurants that sell the same thing, and all of them are extremely busy. We chose one, got a seat, and our bowls of pork bone soup came almost immediately and they were piping hot. There wasn’t a lot of meat on the bones, but the pork did taste pretty good, and especially when it was dipped in the sauce. The soup was also flavorful, mild in flavor, but with a good Chinese medicinal flavor to it.

After finishing the pork bone soup, I was feeling pretty happy and satisfied, and so we decided to call it a night at Raohe Night Market and head back to our hotel. I really enjoyed the mix of food and the overall friendly environment at Raohe Night Market, and I think it’s a great place to spend some time exploring when you’re in Taipei.

Taiwan Night Market - Eating Taiwanese Street Food in Taipei along Raohe Street (饒河夜市)

When it comes to eating Taiwanese street food in Taipei your hands down best bet is to check out one of the many Taiwan Night Market. In this street food challenge, we head over to Raohe Street Night Market (饒河夜市) to sample as many tasty and cheap bites to eat as possible. Locally Taiwanese street food is known as Xiaochi (小吃) and you'll find no shortage of delectable Taiwanese food here in the evenings whether you're craving sweet or savory food items. Compared to Shilin Night Market I actually kind of preferred Raohe Night Market (to visit take the MRT to Songshan Station松山車站) because it focused more on food as opposed to shopping. In our opinion, it is one of the best places to eat street food in Taipei, Taiwan and below you'll find a list of everything we sampled:

1) Black Pepper Bun 胡椒餅 Hu Jiao Bing 胡椒餅
2) Egg tart 蛋撻 dàn tǎ (Mandarin), dan that
3) Daifuku moachi (Chinese: 麻糍; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: moâ-chî) Hokkien and mashu (Chinese: 麻糬; pinyin: má-shû)
4) Egg waffle 雞蛋仔 gai daan jai
5) Smoking cookie and ice cream
6) Fried Chicken Steak 大雞排
7) Bubble tea 波霸奶茶 - bōbà nǎichá

Taiwan Night Market - Eating Taiwanese Street Food in Taipei along Raohe Street (饒河夜市) Travel Food Video Transcript:

Greetings from Taipei, Taiwan. Another day and another night market. And we brought our appetite. Today we are visiting the Raohe Night Market (饒河夜市) and they are renown for their street food. If you want to have street food this is the one market you need to visit. And earlier this week we visited Shilin market (士林夜市) where we got to try a few different treats. Yeah. But we're on the lookout for more Taiwanese street food (Xiaochi - 小吃). It is all about the food tonight. Let's go eat.

Yeah, so we're trying a pork bun (胡椒餅) that was cooked in the oven. And this is just freshly made so really exciting. It is like pipping hot.

And it was cooked in what resembled like one of those Indian tandoori ovens where the bread just sticks to the side.

What is next? Okay, next we're having something sweet so we stopped at Anna's egg tart (蛋撻). And these are like the miniature egg tarts (蛋撻) that you might find in Portugal or Hong Kong or Macau. Except these are like mini bites that you can just pop.

Okay. Sweet. Yeah. The red beans obviously has some sugar added to it. And if I had to guess I think it is something the consistency is sort of like a rice cake on the outside. Do you think it is like a miniature mochi ball (麻糍 - 麻糬).

So this next snack was purchased solely for its cute factor. Let's take a look in the the bag. They're like these little egg waffles (雞蛋仔) or pancakes shaped like a cartoon. So here I've got Sponge Bob Square Pants.

Please put the whole cookie deep in your mouth and chew it. So what are you having Audrey? It is smoking. Smoking cookie. I have to put this whole thing in my mouth.

Alright. Woah! It is smoking out of your mouth. Haha. You look like a dragon.

So you probably just saw me try a smoking cookie. We also got some ice cream from the same place. This is called Smoking Molecule ice cream. I got the bubble tea (波霸奶茶) flavor and this is the bubble tea sauce in a syringe.

An injection of it. An injection. Let me inject that. He said do it slowly. There we go. That looks good. And it has the pearls. This is bubble tea (波霸奶茶) which I love. Let's see is this going to make me smoke as well?

Like this ice cream is super cold. A lot of fun. It is called Cooler Bear (酷樂熊). Yeah. Definitely check

This is the chicken steak (大雞排) and this thing is a behemoth. Like look how big this is. And look how thick it is.

I wanted to order bubble tea (波霸奶茶) with milk and I got the original without milk so it is just black tea with tapioca balls.

But it is not what I wanted so I'm so disappointed. But anyways that was fun. We ate really well so I would definitely say this is a market worth checking out if you're in Taipei (臺北市).

So if you want to check out this really cool night market in Taipei, Taiwan you're going to come to Songshan station (松山車站) and then you're going to take exit one. Yeah, and you turn left. There is a huge temple at the entrance.

This is part of our Travel in Taiwan video series showcasing Taiwanese food, Taiwanese culture and Taiwanese cuisine.

1. Beef Noodles (牛肉麵)
Location: Liu Shandong Beef Noodles 劉山東牛肉麵 (

Beef noodles are perhaps the single most famous of all Taiwanese foods, there are few things better than a giant bowl of thick noodles with a soothing beef bone broth, and Taiwan does it well. Liu Shandong Beef Noodles is one of the legends of Taiwanese beef noodles, old school, and droolworthy. It was an honor to have a kitchen tour with Taiwan’s King of beef noodles!

2. Lu Rou Fan (滷肉飯)
Location: Jin Da Lu Rou Fan 今大魯肉飯 (
Total price - 170 TWD ($5.62)
Perhaps the single most iconic and loved dish in Taiwan for Taiwanese people is Lu Rou Fan (滷肉飯), a sauce made from braised pork belly to eat over rice. It has its origins in Taiwan when people needed to take a little meat and stretch the flavor, creating a flavorful gravy. It’s comfort food and something that is dear to the hearts of Taiwanese people.

3. Scallion Pancake (蔥抓餅)
Location: Hsiung Chi Scallion Pancake 雄記蔥抓餅 (

Ah yes, stinky tofu, something your taste buds will never forget! It’s more than a meal, but an experience and something truly to be respected. This place makes all their own stinky tofu and we had the rare opportunity to taste a 2 year old fermented tofu - one of the stronger flavors I’ve ever experienced, WOW!

5. Dumplings (餃子)
Location: Dragon Inn Dumpling House 龍門客棧餃子館 (林森店) (

DELICIOUS TAIPEI STREET FOOD TOUR Raohe St Night Market Tour in Taiwan - vlog #044 part 2

If you're wondering what to do in Taipei, here's a awesome place that you can visit. There are numerous amount of taiwanese street food vendors throughout the city and majority of them are located in what's called the night markets. The one that we'll be visiting is the Raohe St Night Market which is a massive night market full of delicious street food and shops. We'll be doing a Raohe St Night Market tour here and sampling tons of food!

Before you decide to visit the night market, be sure if you come here to bring cash and also travel light. There will be lots of walking narrow crowded paths and there are not many places where you can sit so wear some comfy shoes. Also a tip while you are here, maybe try to walk through the entire night market first to see what you might want to eat then make a 2nd trip around and eat there because there are too many options to pick from! This is my first time eating taiwanese street food so I'm sure they'll be tons of new things to try. You might be overwhelmed with the amount of option so be sure to come hungry!

There's alot of things that I liked here, but the one that was my most favorite is the Fuzhou Shizu Hu Jiao Bing which is the taiwanese black pepper pork buns. These delicious pepper pork buns are made fresh and you can watch the entire process while you are there. These buns are baked in the clay oven and once they come out, these piping hot buns will make your mouth drool. The Hu Jiao Bing are amazing here and are a must try here at the market!
