Rameshwaram Chennai Full Journey: Palk Strait and WDP3A

Presenting a full journey compilation between Rameshwaram and Chennai aboard the Rameshwaram Bhubaneshwar Express (I later switch to the Guruvayur Chennai Egmore Express). We start off bright and early from Rameshwaram, led by a Golden Rock WDP3A, delayed by a few minutes due to the arrival of the legendary Boat Mail from Chennai, also led by a sparkling WDP3A.

Soon, we cross the choppy waters of the Palk Strait across the 2 kilometre wide Pamban Bridge. We subsequently cut through interior Tamil Nadu, through the small towns of Ramanathapuram, Paramakkudi and Sivaganga. In the process, we meet the Madurai Rameshwaram and the Tiruchirapalli Rameshwaram Passengers, both with Golden Rock Alcos - the first with a Golden Rock WDP3A.

We reach Tiruchirappalli at lunch time. Due to track work in the Trichy Villupuram main line, we take the chord line and fly across the dried up Kaveri and Colleroon rivers. We are made to halt at Virudunagar where meet the Vaigai Express and the Bangalore Kairakal Passenger. We subsequently proceed towards Villupuram and meet the Villupuram Mayiladuthurai Passenger on the outskirts of Villupuram.

I switch trains at Villupuram to board the WAP7 hauled Guruvayur Chennai Egmore Express and we fly towards Chennai as dusk settles around us. A bunch of south bound trains from Chennai fly past, the most notable being the Tiruchendur Express, hauled by a Tondiarpet WDM3A.

Journey Across the Bay of Bengal - Chennai to Rameswaram via Madurai

Highlights from a journey compilation from Chennai to Rameshwaram. We depart late in the night from Chennai Egmore on the Chennai Madurai Express and find ourselves at Trichy the next morning. After a brief parallel exit out of Trichy with the Trichy-Rameshwaram Passenger, we head towards Dindigul and Kodaikanal. The Tondiarpet WDM3A negotiates the rocky terrain on an overcast day as we curve past the Sirumalai Hills towards Madurai.

At Madurai, we have a 3 hour break where we are entertained by Golden Rock Alcos, including a Golden Rock WDP3A with the Tiruchendur Passenger. Our Madurai Rameswaram Passenger is hauled by a Golden Rock WDG3A which cuts through the Tamil Nadu hinterland. The sun bursts out at Ramanathapuram and soon, the soil turns sandy as we approach the coast after Mandapam where we cross the 2.1 km Pamban Bridge linking the Indian sub-continent mainland with the island of Pamban. The bridge is across the choppy waters of the Palk Strait and there is a 15 kmph restriction aboard the bridge, resulting in an prolonged view of the sea.

Upon reaching Rameshwaram, I checked into my hotel and took a bus to Pamban and explored the Pamban bridge on foot. It is an exhilarating walk on the road bridge which is much higher than the rail bridge (which is quite low) as the wind really blows you away. And then, the evening passenger to Madurai with an evergreen Golden Rock WDP3A sallied forth to match the brilliant sunset on the western horizon.

ABOUT BOAT MAIL: The Boat Mail or Indo-Ceylon Express is an express train that connects Rameswaram with the state capital Chennai via Devakottai. During 1900's it was a combined train and steamer ferry service between India and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). Connecting Chennai and Colombo, the system initially utilised a rail-to-sea operation, but changed to a rail-to-sea-to-rail operation. Passengers could buy a single ticket for the journey. Now at present, it runs from Chennai Egmore to Rameswaram via Villuppuram, Kumbakonam, Trichy, Karaikkudi, Devakottai, Manamadurai, Paramakkudi, Ramanathapuram, Mandapam and Pamban.

In 1964 a passenger train was washed into the sea by huge waves during the 1964 cyclone, when nearing Dhanushkodi. The railway tracks and the pier at Dhanushkodi were also destroyed. Following this, the Indian portion of the train service now only operates up to Rameswaram, while the ferry service to Talaimannar from Rameswaram has been discontinued from 1984 due to Tamil Eelam issue.

ABOUT PAMBAN BRIDGE - Pamban Bridge is a railway bridge which connects the town of Mandapam in mainland India with Pamban Island, and Rameswaram. Opened on 24 February 1914, it was India's first sea bridge, and was the longest sea bridge in India until the opening of the Bandra - Worli Sea Link in 2010. The rail bridge is, for the most part, a conventional bridge resting on concrete piers, but has a double-leaf bascule section midway, which can be raised to let ships and barges pass through. Until 1988, the Pamban bridge was the only surface transport that connected Tamil Nadu's island of Rameswaram to the mainland.

In 1988, a road bridge was also constructed parallel to the rail bridge. This road bridge is also known as Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge. The Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge connects the National Highway (NH 49) with the Rameswaram island. It stands on the Palk Strait and between the shores of Mandapam (a place on the Indian mainland) and Pamban (one of the fishing towns on Rameswaram island). It was inaugurated by then Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on 2 October 1988. This 2.345 km long bridge took close to 14 years to be completed.

The railway bridge is located 12.5 metres (41 ft) above sea level and is 6,776 ft (2,065 m) long. The bridge consists of 143 piers and has a double-leaf bascule section with a Scherzer rolling type lift span that can be raised to let ships pass. Each half of the lifting span weighs 415 tonnes (457 tons). The two leaves of the bridge are opened manually using levers.

Plans for a bridge to connect to mainland was suggested in 1870 as the British Administration sought ways to increase trade with Ceylon. The construction began in August 1911 and was opened on 24 February 1914. The adjacent road bridge was opened in 1988. As of 5 December 2018, the bridge was closed due to a crack in the bridge and the maintenance work is going on. The Indian Railway Minister Piyush Goyal announced that a new railway bridge will be constructed near the old Pamban Bridge at a cost of ₹250 crores. This new dual track bridge is planned to be constructed in automotive mode, allowing two ships to pass this bridge at the same time.

Pamban Bridge is a railway bridge which connects the town of Rameswaram on Pamban Island to mainland India. Opened on 24 February 1914, it was India's first sea bridge, and was the longest sea bridge in India until the opening of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in 2010. The rail bridge is, for the most part, a conventional bridge resting on concrete piers, but has a double-leaf bascule section midway, which can be raised to let ships and barges pass through. In 1988, a road bridge was also constructed parallel to the rail bridge. This road bridge is also known as Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge. The Pamban Road Bridge connects the National Highway (NH 49) with the Rameswaram island. It stands on the palk strait and between the shores of Mandapam (Place on the Indian Main land) and Pamban (One of the fishermen town in Rameswaram island). It was inaugurated by former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi On the date of October 2, 1988.

he railway bridge carried metre gauge trains connecting Mandapam on mainland India to Pamban. Indian Railways upgraded the bridge to carry broad gauge trains and the work was completed on 12 August 2007. Boat mail express runs from Chennai Egmore to Rameswaram. The train ran upto Dhanushkodi till 1964 when the metre-gauge branch line from Pamban to Dhanushkodi was destroyed during the 1964 Dhanushkodi cyclone.

The bridge spans a 2 km strait between the Indian mainland and Pamban island. The mainland end of the bridge is located at 9°16′56.70″N 79°11′20.12″E. The bridge is located in the world's second most corrosive environment after Florida, making its maintenance a challenging job. The location is also a cyclone-prone high wind velocity zone.

After the 1964 cyclone, the girders of Pamban bridge were replaced and an anemometer was installed. When the wind speed crosses 55 km per hour, signals on the bridge send out an automatic warning to approaching trains. This bridge was rebuilt in 1965 after the original bridge collapsed during the Tsunami of December 1964. It is with the reconstruction of the Pamban Bridge that Mr. E Sreedharan of Delhi Metro made his initial mark.

The Pamban bridge is a type of cantilever bridge on the Palk Strait connects Rameswaram on Pamban Island to mainland India. It refers to both the road bridge and the cantilever railway bridge, though primarily it means the latter. It was India's first sea bridge. It is the second longest sea bridge in India (after Bandra Worli Sea Link) at a length of about 2.3 km.

Until 1911 people crossed by boat to visit an ancient Ram temple at Rameswaram.

The railway bridge is 6,776 ft (2,065 m) and was opened for traffic in 1914. The railroad bridge is a still functioning double leaf bascule bridge section that can be raised to let ships pass under the bridge. The railway bridge historically carried meter gauge trains on it, but Indian Railways upgraded the bridge to carry broad gauge trains in a project that finished Aug. 12, 2007. Until recently, the two leaves of the bridge were opened manually using levers by workers. About 10 ships, cargo carriers, coast guard ships, fishing vessels and oil tankers, pass through the bridge every month.

The bridge is located at the world's second highly corrosive environment, next to Miami, US, making the construction a challenging job. The location is also a cyclone-prone high wind velocity zone. It sits on an artificial sandstone reef. Nearly 5,000 tonnes of cement, 18,000 cubic feet of crushed metal stone, 2,600 tonnes of steel and 80,000 cubic feet of boulders were used to build it.

The bridge has 145 fixed spans, and one-navigation span (a total of 225 feet) that opens for ships. The drawbridge at the center comprises two sections of the navigation span, called the Scherzer span. Each weighs 415 tonnes. It is a spectacular sight when drawn up to let ships through.

A woman had a miraculous escape after she fell off a moving train into the sea from the Pamban bridge. She opened the compartment door mistaking it for the toilet and fell into the sea -
