IWO JIMA MEMORIAL: ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA (4K)
The Battle of Iwo Jima was a major battle in WWII won by the United States against Japan. A photograph of the raising of the American flag by six Marines atop Mt. Suribachi was taken by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal, and it became one of the most iconic photographs of WWII. The Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, officially known as the United States Marine Corps War Memorial, is based on that photograph.

James Dorbor (8 ans) est transporté au centre de traitement Ebola JFK.
Son père l’avait emmené dans une clinique locale, mais le personnel craignait d’être infecté. Ils se sont ensuite rendus au centre JFK, où James est resté étendu pendant des heures dans la rue à même le sol avant d’être admis.
Lorsque les portes ont ouvert, les gens se sont précipités à l’intérieur, laissant James où il était, incapable de bouger. Son père avait trop peur de le porter. James est décédé peu après son admission.

Buschwick, Brooklyn NY by BRENDA ANN KENNEALLY - Pour la petite histoire

Andy et sa bande dans notre quartier de Bushwick à Brooklyn durant l’été 2000. Le pâté de maisons de Dodworth Street comptait à l’époque douze bâtiments vides, cinq terrains vagues et seulement sept immeubles occupés.
Ce quartier était le terrain de jeu où mon fils et ses copains ont créé leurs souvenirs d’enfance. Leur passe-temps favori consistait à sauter d’un toit à l’autre.
Avance rapide : 2018. Bushwick est devenu le temple de la gentrification.
L’immeuble devant lequel se trouve Andy sur la photo a été transformé en copropriété de trois appartements, chacun vendu 1,3 million de dollars dans les années 1990.
Ces biens appartenaient au Département du logement et du développement urbain et devaient être vendus à des familles à faibles revenus pour 40 000 dollars.
Des promoteurs ont réussi à faire main basse sur ces taudis qui ne valaient rien et en ont tiré un bénéfice qui se chiffre en millions de dollars.
La famille et les amis d’Andy ont tous dû quitter le quartier devenu trop cher pour eux.

Six marines américains hissent un second drapeau, plus grand, au sommet du mont Suribachi à Iwo Jima, une île volcanique.
Trois d’entre eux n’ont jamais vu la photo ; ils ont été tués lors des combats qui ont suivi contre les Japonais sur l’île d’Iwo Jima. 23 février 1945.

Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima)
The Marine Corps War Memorial is a military memorial statue outside the walls of the Arlington National Cemetery and next to the Netherlands Carillon, in Arlington, Virginia, in the United States. On February 19, 1945 about 70,000 marines invaded the small Pacific Island of Iwo Jima which was under control of the Japanese army. The island was a strategic objective due to its airfield which was used for kamikaze attacks.
By capturing the island, the Allied Forces would not only prevent attacks from the island but it would also give them a base from where the Japanese mainland could be reached by B-29 Superfortresses.
One of the first objectives in the attack was capturing Mount Suribachi, the highest point on the island. On February 23, the mountain was almost secured. At around 10:30 am, a small American flag was raised atop the mountain. Later that day, a much larger flag was raised by five Marines and a Navy corpsman. The raising was witnessed by news photographer Joe Rosenthal whose pulitzer prize winning picture of the flag raising would become a symbol of the war in the Pacific. It was soon used by the American government to sell war bonds and to promote the war effort.
The battle of Iwo Jima was one of the bloodiest in the war, with more than 6,800 American and 23,000 Japanese casualties. Of the six soldiers shown on Rosenthal's picture, only three survived the war. The other three were killed during further battle at Iwo Jima.
The picture inspired sculptor Felix de Weldon, who created a life size model of the photograph. Paid for by donations, it was later cast in bronze and in September 1954 it was brought to Washington, D.C as part of a memorial designed by Horace Peaslee.
