Come with me as I check out this gorgeous place and make sure you don't miss it on your own travels! xo

GUM is an abbreviation of the Russian: Главный универсальный магазин, translated as The Main Universal Store is the main department store in many cities during the years of the Soviet Union.
The most famous GUM is the one in Moscow in Katai-gorod, that faces Red Square and the Kremlin with its facade extending for 242 m (794ft)..,..
Until the 1920s, the location was known as the Upper Trading Rows and were built between 1890 & 1893 by Alexander Pomerasntsev, responsible for the overall design and Vladimir Shukhov responsible for the engineering.
In 1917, trade was closed, goods requisitioned, the People's Commissariat of Food of Russia Alexander Dmitrievich Tsyurupa settled here, carrying out the policy of food dictatorship from here. In the Rows there is a warehouse for requisitioned foodstuffs and a canteen for employees. In 1928, Stalin closed GUM and the building was used by the Committee in charge of the first Five-Year Plan. Interestingly, following the suicide of Stalin's wife, Nadezhda in 1932, the GUM was used briefly to display her body.
In 1953, GUM reopened as a department store and became one of the few stores in the Soviet Union that did not have shortages of consumer goods.....
At the end of the Soviet era, GUM was partially, then fully privatised...

Description of GUM shopping mall:

On the eastern side of the Red square, lies the building which houses Russia's most famous shopping mall - the State Department Store, GUM (in full Glavny Universalny Magazin). Since the fall of communism, several other shopping centers and hypermarkets have sprung up to rival it in prestige, but GUM retains its status as a consumer Mecca for visitors to Moscow. In the Soviet Union, the top floor was home to Section 100, a secret clothing store only open to the highest echelons of the party. Nowadays the rows of exclusive boutiques are accessible to anyone with a platinum card. That said, the building itself is glorious, and there are still a few more interesting relics of a bygone era on the higher floors that make it well worth exploring.

The site has been used for trading throughout history. By 1520 there was already a large stone arcade standing here. Fire destroyed the old Upper Trading Rows, as they became known, and the current building was completed in 1893. A joint project between architect Aleksander Pomerantsev and engineer Vladimir Shukov, its steel framework and glass roof were, at the time, on the cutting edge of technology, and give GUM a certain resemblance to a large European station. It has an area to match and, at the end of the 19th Century, it was the largest shopping center in Europe. Before the 1917 Revolution it contained a staggering 1,200 stores.

In 1928, GUM was closed by Stalin, who decided to use the building as the headquarters for officials working on the first Five Year Plan. GUM was reopened in 1953, and became one of the most popular sites for the legendary Soviet queues, which could at times extend all the way across Red Square. After privatization in the early 90s, it rapidly became the address of choice for top-end Western retailers. Journalists and travel writers often comment on the sharp contrast between prices in GUM and poverty in Russia - as if the majority of New Yorkers get their clothes from Saks, or the average Londoner could afford to do their grocery shopping in Harrods. Even if you don't intend to buy anything, a tour of Red Square should always include a quick stroll down the aisles of GUM.

[Walking with Alyssa] Russia, Moscow, GUM Department Store

Hello everyone and today we are walikng through GUM (ГУМ). GUM is the main department store in many cities of the former Soviet Union, known as State Department Store. during the Soviet era (until 1991). Similarly-named stores operated in some Soviet republics and in post-Soviet states.
This place has an amazing history. Foe Soviet people it was really an important place where people from all of the country was able to buy products from Sovieet and even foreign manufactures/ My mom and grandma used to live nearby (its the center of Moscow) and went here regullary to see some fashion things (as it was used to be), foods, sometihng new, modern and fresh. Its was not as easy to buy good stuff so...
And about the HISTORY OF THIS PLACE: Catherine II of Russia commissioned Giacomo Quarenghi, a Neoclassical architect from Italy, to design a huge trade center along the east side of Red Square. However, that building was lost to the 1812 Fire of Moscow and replaced by trading rows designed by Joseph Bove. In turn, the current structure replaced Bove's.
By the time of the Russian Revolution of 1917, the building contained some 1,200 stores. After the Revolution, the GUM was nationalised. During the NEP period (1921–28), GUM as a State Department Store operated as a model retail enterprise for consumers throughout Russia regardless of class, gender, and ethnicity.
GUM continued to be used as a department store until Joseph Stalin converted it into office space in 1928 for the committee in charge of his first Five Year Plan.
After reopening as a department store in 1953, the GUM became one of the few stores in the Soviet Union that did not have shortages of consumer goods.

This video is kinda old, from the end of 2020 so its Christmas and New Year decorations everywhere. Its the best time to see GUM form the inside and outside. Its rhe time of the ayer this mall is always extremely crowded, and even in 2020 COVID year.
Hopefully you will enjoy walkinf with me. Dont be scared of my technical problem with stab =)))

Walking Tour 4K | GUM Luxury Mall, Moscow - Russia

Kaufhaus Gum in Moskau - Aufnahmen aus dem Jahre 1986 - Shopping Mall Gum Moscow 1986

4 months after the accident in Tchernobyl I was in Moscow with a travel group in August 1986. Gorbachev had just been in power for a little over a year. On the several days' journey I tried to catch impressions of city, country and people with my camera. At that time one was not allowed to film subways, soldiers, police or even some everyday situations.

In the next days and weeks I will publish here every now and then excerpts from the former recordings.

Typical RUSSIAN Shopping Mall (Moscow actually)

As a person who was born in Moscow and lived here all my life, I can show you exactly this part of our big Russia. So, please have in mind that of course in average shopping centres in Russia can be not that big / fancy, however, of course there are exceptions.

I hope you enjoyed the video. I am really sorry about some strange sounds my mic produced throughout almost the whole video.

I am now trying to identify the reason.
