HELLO FROM COUNTRY #172 - ERITREA!

I'm thrilled to be back in Africa where I will spend the remaining 3 months of the year! Many of you probably haven’t heard of Eritrea before and that’s because it’s a relatively new country and it’s notoriously difficult to enter (top 5 in the world). After 48 hours of roaming around the capital of Asmara and the ancient port city of Massawa, I’ve really enjoyed my time here.

I’m getting flashbacks to when I was in Ethiopia, yet also touches of Yemen Somaliland and Italy. Yes - ITALY! Eritrea is a former Italian colony and their influence is remarkably well-preserved in the form of giant cathedrals, pizza parlors, gelato shops, old Italian cars, appertivos and many people can still speak fluent Italiano.

The capital of Asmara is VERY safe, with kind-hearted people and surprisingly the weather is cold here (2,400 meters high). Unfortunately due to WiFi issues, I haven't been able to upload anything until now, but there’s no hurry because life is wonderful here! More to come soon ????????

Eritrea
Country in East Africa
Eritrea is a northeast African country on the Red Sea coast. It shares borders with Ethiopia, Sudan and Djibouti. The capital city, Asmara, is known for its Italian colonial buildings, like St. Joseph's Cathedral, as well as art deco structures. Italian, Egyptian and Turkish architecture in Massawa reflect the port city's colorful history. Notable buildings here include St. Mariam Cathedral and the Imperial Palace. ― Google

Asmara
Capital of Eritrea
Asmara is the capital city of Eritrea, a country in the Horn of Africa. It's known for its Italian colonial buildings, like the Catholic Cathedral. The city's eclectic architecture ranges from art deco cinemas to the Futurist, airplane-shaped Fiat Tagliero service station. The grand former governor's palace dates from the 19th century. Close by is the ornate Opera House, built in the early 1900s in a mix of styles. ― Google

Visiting This Country Is Like Going Back In Time! ???????? ERITREA ???????? (#175)

This place isn't Italy. It isn't Cuba, and it's not the Middle East either. This is Eritrea, and there's nowhere else like it on earth. Due to a history of colonization by Italy and near-constant war with it's neighbor Ethiopia, this country has a very distinctive look--and it feels like it hasn't changed in 50 years.

After visiting the capital city of Asmara, it was time to tour the entire country. We would visit lands that very few foreigners have seen--at least in the last 30 years. Ruins and remains from the Ottomans, Egyptians, Italians and Ethiopians lay waiting to be explored, as if they were destroyed just yesterday. This was one of the most interesting trips I had ever taken.

Eritrea road trip: Asmara to Keren

Look at these endearing camels roaming the highways of Eritrea! They are the primary mode of transport in the Eritrean deserts and mountains, a rather adventurous ride as compared to our four-wheel drive. A visual treat on a 3-hour drive from Asmara to Keren.

ERITREA ????????- What's It Like to Travel There?

Eritrea remains one of the least visited countries in the world for a reason. On top of the visa issues, in order to travel anywhere outside of the capital – Asmara, or attend national events you need each individual permit. These permits aren’t the easiest to obtain due to the country’s bureaucracy and they’re often rejected.
I spent a full week exploring different corners of Eritrea, one of the most mysterious countries in the world.

Arrival to Asmara, Eritrea

Oct.17, 2018

Driving Tour of Eritrea

Today's adventure of American gypC I'm giving you a driving tour of Eritrea. As I've mentioned before there's not that much information or awareness of this country so I figured I would put some of these footages that I got on my last trip to good use. I went to Eritrea to visit some family and while I was there we drove to a lot of cities and I had my camera on most of the time because I wanted my brothers who haven't been back to Eritrea in 20 plus years to see everything I saw and experienced.

After the civil war in 1998 between Eritrea and Ethiopia, most of my family got split up because we took refuge in other countries. Me and my siblings were lucky enough to come to America specifically Minnesota. It's a distant memory now but it was a hard adjustment at the time for everyone who lost homes, businesses, money and life with their families.

Even though my family is from Eritrea it was not that easy going back. I had a hard time getting a visa because they felt like I should apply for this card that makes you like a green card holder. Since I was technically Eritrean they wanted me to apply for the card which will also opt me in to pay 2% of my salary to Eritrean government. Fortunately they gave me a visa but warned me this will be the last time and next time I have to get the card. Even when I was in the country I sensed a general fear of the government by the people and heard some outrages stories that I don't care to share for safety reasons. Don't get me wrong, hundrads even thousands of Eritrean and other tourists go to Eritrea every year and it's changed since 2010.

On a happy note I had a great two months there and got to catch up with family. I would love to go back in the distant future to see the progress the country as made but again very distant future.

Inside Africa's North Korea: How It Really Is ???????? (#174)

You may not have heard of this country, but perhaps you’ve seen it by another name: “the North Korea of Africa”. But that doesn’t quite tell the full story. There’s nowhere like Eritrea in Africa, or in the world for that matter. It’s a place where everyone must serve in the military, a place where most people have never used the internet, and a place where people have to stay in their lane, or else. But it’s also a country of extremely friendly and welcoming people. It’s very safe, you can walk any street in the country without a care in the world. And it’s extremely beautiful—while also remaining relatively undiscovered by the outside world.

This was one of the trips I was most excited for. It took almost 2 months to secure the visa, but once I got it, I was on my way to Asmara, the capital. This is the record of my journey.

Eritrea - World's Most Censored Country ||Travelling Mantra || Eritrea Part 1

Welcome to my new Vlog! Eritrea is a country located in the Horn of Africa region of Eastern Africa. Bordered by the Red Sea to the northeast and east, Sudan to the west, Ethiopia to the south, and Djibouti to the southeast, Eritrea boasts a diverse landscape and a rich cultural heritage. Eritrea is a multi-ethnic nation with nine recognized ethnic groups, each with its own language and traditions. The Tigrinya people make up the largest ethnic group, constituting about 50% of the population. Other significant groups include the Tigre, Saho, Afar, and Beja. Tigrinya, Arabic, and English serve as the country's working languages. Eritrea faces several challenges, including poverty, food insecurity, and a lack of political freedoms. However, the country is also rich in natural resources and has a strong cultural heritage. With continued international cooperation and development efforts, Eritrea has the potential to overcome its challenges and build a brighter future for its people.
