ROAD TRIP MIDDLE EAST: Iran (Part 2 - Shiraz)

After filming in Dubai last episode, I set off for Iran to start my road trip across the Middle East. My journey began in the beautiful city of Shiraz, known for flowers and poetry. Come with me as I explore my first Persian city as a female alone - the food, the architecture, the markets of the bazaar, but mostly, the people. I stayed in the magical Darbe Shazdeh boutique hotel, where I met an inspiring couple from London, travelling Iran with their children as a family. I also became friends with Faranak, the owner of the hotel, who gave me fascinating insight into life as a woman, business owner and advocate of tourism to Iran. I hope you enjoy this travelogue. I still have much to learn about Iran's history and politics and culture, however, I hope that maybe I might encourage you to consider the positives and beauty of this frequently misunderstood country.

ROAD TRIP MIDDLE EAST: Iran (Part 3 - Yazd, Isfahan)

Welcome back to the next part of my journey as I travel through Iran, filming my experience as a tourist, sharing with you the kindness of Iranian people. This time, I go from Shiraz to Yazd and then up north to the beautiful city of Isfahan. In this episode, we rent a car and drive to the magnificent historical ruins of Persepolis. I sleep in a little ecolodge homestay called Nartitee in the mudbrick village of Taft. The next day, I explore Yazd, a former centre for Zoroastrianism, and meet a sweet local girl and her mother. The adventure continues as our road trip takes us up to Isfahan - a sophisticated cultured city with inspiring architecture and history. We stay in the home of a kind local couple and I speak with their son, Amir, who is a professor at a university in Isfahan.
I continue to see examples of the kindness of strangers, Persian hospitality and signs that this population truly wants peace and friendship with the rest of the world. I hope that in sharing this journey with you, I can give you some insight into their hearts and connect this troubled but beautiful country with humanity.

ROAD TRIP MIDDLE EAST: Filmmaker's Journey through Dubai, Iran & Turkey

Here is the first peek at my series documenting the epic adventure I took earlier this year, starting in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and travelling up through remote parts of Iran and Turkey by car to Europe. I knew so little about Persian culture before this road trip and I still have much to learn. Hopefully through my cinematography and interviews with local people, I can show you a side of the Middle East you may not be able to experience in person or see often in the media. Thank you to the beautiful people who embraced me and made me feel so welcome in this complicated but magnificent region of the world.

Iran Land Of colors

Iran
Probably the most beautiful country in the world
Iran, Persia, Pars, you have heard them all, they refer to present Iran, a country as old as the history itself and as beautiful as eyes can perceive. Here you can visit glorious pre-historic structures like Persepolis, you can visit most amazing natural beauties like the Alī Sadr cave, you can climb high mountains like Alborz, or just have a cup of tea in Hāfiz Garden, you can swim in Caspian Sea, or if you want to swim in winter season why not do that in Kish Island while in this free trade zone, you can do your shopping too. In Iran you will experience different cultures and religions, with a hospitability you have never seen before. In Iran you can visit cities like Tehran, a major metropolis, Shīrāz, city of lovers and gardens, or experience half of the world by visiting the legendry city of Esfehān. In Iran you can spot exclusive wild and plant lives in protected forests like Golestān National Park. You can stay in five star hotels and fly domestically to almost all cities, or if you wish stay in an old renovated caravanserai to get that archaic feeling and take road trips to fully enjoy the smaller but wonderful villages like Māsūleh. One thing is sure, if you come, you will be back.

The Poorest city in the Middle East? (70% poverty)

Today we explored parts of Tripoli, Lebanon's second-largest city and one of the oldest cities in the world! Unfortunately, it's also one of the poorest, with a 70% poverty rate, 60% unemployment rate and a primary school dropout rate of over 40%. We were kindly welcomed by Misbah Ahdab, Omar El Imadi and his friend Tarek, who showed us around their beautiful home. We visited the International Fairgrounds of Tripoli, built by Oscar Niemeyer in the 1960s, but unfortunately never opened due to the civil war. We also visited the old train station, which once was the terminus of the Orient Express steam train, before heading to the Old Souks. Tripoli is a very special place. Despite the hardships and struggles, I felt an overwhelming sense of history and hospitality here, just like the rest of Lebanon!

The story of a US citizen returning to Iran after 50 years

A short talk with the American tourist about revisiting Iran after half a century

“‘Are you sure you wanna go to Iran?’ some of my friends asked me after they knew about my trip to Iran.” Says Allen. The American retired Asian studies professor of San Diego State University who decides to visit Iran again after half a century.

Dr. Allen Wittenborn, who is 80 years old now, visited Iran first in 1969. It was when the former King was in power. He started his journey from London and visited many cities and countries like Paris, Prague, Istanbul, etc. and then arrived in Tehran. It was when he was astonished by the modern, open atmosphere of Tehran. He believes the society was comparable to European countries and even the US.

However, this time Allen was in Iran for 15 days on our Persia in depth tour and had the chance to visit many more cities like Kashan, Isfahan, Yazd, Shiraz and other small villages in between. In this interview, he tells us about his experience and his most favorite tourist site.

Allen decided to visit Iran to see himself the real picture of Iran apart from the engineered picture that the media lead people to believe. Therefore as an American citizen who has been in Iran 50 years ago and who loves traveling, it would be really compelling to hear about his experience of traveling in Iran and what he liked or didn’t on his trip.

15 days on our Persia in depth tour:

2 hét Perzsiában - Irán (2019)

Élményvideónk 2 hetes közel-keleti utunkról. Ezúttal Iránban barangoltunk gyalogosan, taxival, vonattal, busszal, stoppal és motorral. Suhantunk az éjszakai vonattal a mesés Shiráz városába, kézenálltunk a világ 2. legnagyobb főterén Isfahánban, felfedeztük Persepolis ősi romvárosát, úttalan utakon stoppoltunk az elsivatagosodott iráni felföldön. Elrobogtunk az 5600 méteres Damavand szomszédságában, majd kerekeinkkel érintve a Kaszpi-tenger habjait visszafordulva átvágtunk a méltán híres és veszélyes 160 km hosszú Chaloos úton, 2200 méteres tengerszint feletti magasságig jutva. Teherán tetejéről visszatekintve pedig lábunk alatt terült el a számunkra oly kedves és félreértett országunk, mely a sáfrányos teákon, a mindig mosolygó, békét árasztó embereken, szomorúnak tűnő, de közelebbről vizsgálva mégis boldog emberi sorsokon, havas hegycsúcsokon, tátongó völgyeken, forró sivatagon és pezsgő városi életen kívül még annyi mindent tartogat a kíváncsi utazó számára, ha nyitott rá. Mi azok voltunk és örök emlékkel távoztunk. Jó szórakozást.
