Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Today on Rock The Park, we’re in Hawaii and it’s no day at the beach. We’ll try to summit the world’s largest and still active volcano. The Big Island of Hawaii is a land of epic contrast from its green rainforest and tropical waters, to the black sand beaches and rugged coastlines. Nevertheless, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is probably best known for its explosive history since it's home to two of the most active volcanoes on earth. 70 million years of volcanic eruptions formed the Hawaii's Big Island, and it's still growing because of constant lava flows. Mauna Loa is the world's largest volcano by mass, but by measuring it from its base (below sea level) it is easily the tallest mountain, rising 560,00 feet which is almost twice the size of Mount Everest!

Rock the Park is an Emmy award-winning adventure series seen every Saturday on ABC featuring our national parks and other public lands across America and the world. Now in its 6th season, Jack Steward and Colton Smith go off the beaten path to explore magnificent landscapes, incredible wildlife and all the exciting ways to immerse yourself in and around nature. Whether it’s swimming with sea turtles, climbing to the top of a volcano or repelling into a glacier, Jack and Colton are living life to the fullest and inspiring others to do the same.

Join Jack and Colton every week as they post new episodes and new adventures. Go behind the scenes of their hit TV series with Jack’s YouTube series – The Pursuit is Happiness and tune into helpful hacks and how-to’s to make your outdoor adventures the best they can be. And if there’s a park or wilderness you’d like to see or a question or comment for the guys, just leave it for Jack and Colton.

Virunga National Park in Goma, Congo

Virunga National Park is a national park in the Albertine Rift Valley in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Virunga National Park, Africa’s most biodiverse protected area, exists to protect 1/3 of the world’s wild mountain gorillas, over one thousand species of mammal, bird, reptile and amphibian, and provide a brighter future to more than four million people affected by conflict.

Virunga National park is one of not the best with diversity in Africa Famous for mountain gorilla trekking/ gorilla tours. Almost more than half of what's in Sub Saharan Africa in concentrated in this park. This park also boosts of two active volcanoes. Virunga national park though has for a long time been threatened by political conflicts in DRC but somehow its still surviving and was recently reopened. Established in 1925 by the then King of Beligium King Albert 1 and it was first called Albert national Park. It was primarily gazetted to protect the endangered Mountain Gorillas which can also be found in Uganda and Rwanda Only there by giving rise to gorilla trekking/ gorilla safari as a thriving activity. After 1960 when Congo had gotten independence the park deteriorated just like the country and it was not until the early 70s when the president picked interest in conservation that the park was revived and renamed Virunga National Park. The park is about 7800 sq km and stretches from Virunga Mountains in the South to the Rwenzori in the north. The park is well known for its bird, mammal and reptile concentration more than any other protected areas in Africa. Some of the notables include the chimpanzees, mountain gorillas, giraffes, buffaloes and many others.

Virunga National Park is the oldest wildlife protected area on the African soil created to protect and conserve the unique wildlife species therein, for science and research purposes and protecting an indigenous threatened fruit-gathering community; the Twa. The Virunga wildlife conservancy is the joint where the West African rainforests meet with the East African savanna grasslands and runs more than 300 km along the Albertine rift that splits the African continent from north to south. The vestiges of Virunga's rich diverse ecosystem that includes block mountain, volcanic mountains, the Albertine rift, craters and crater lakes, rainforests, woodlands, open grasslands, swamp and wetland vegetation amongst others extend into Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable another gorilla trekking destination, Queen Elizabeth, Semliki, Rwenzori and Mgahinga National Park as well as Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, both gorilla safari destinations

Of recent mountain gorillas in Virunga have been the major attraction in this park given the fact that this is among the few parks in the area with these endangered gorillas. People prefer to track the gorillas here also because the cost is low and the park is also less congested compared to other tracking centers like PNV and Bwindi. This park is still fresh for new discoveries since it has not had a lot of tourism activity for a long time since its inception and it would be a good idea for those who want research and adventures in the same line. For some good time the area has been free for rebel activity and it is safe to travel, there is of course propaganda that the place is not safe but what of the influx of tourist coming in every day. In 1979, the Virunga was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of her ecological importance though political upheavals have had negative implications on the conservancy. The 1990's war period in the Rwanda was so challenging to the Virunga because of high influx of refugees into the Virunga conservancy_ who encroached on wildlife resources. In 1994, the Virunga conservancy was declared World Heritage in Danger and later became a Ramsar site of international importance in 1996. The Virunga is still rated a strong ecological pillar for the entire east and central African ecosystem.

►Virunga National Park Enter Fee and Nyiragongo Hiking Price:

We would love to ride our motorcycles in Virunga National Park Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo but They told us NO! Why?

First of all for our safety, because the park has some deadly attacks sometimes. Therefore if anything happened when we ride our motorcycle they couldn’t protect us.

Second of all for Virunga NP’s safety. A couple of weeks ago they had another attack and they closed one of African’s most popular nature reserves for tourists. So, if anything happened to us Virunga needs to close a while and they cannot help Gorillas there.

When we read this on our e-mail we parked our motorcycle next to the Goma border of DRC in Rwanda. We walked to the border and enter DRC. After that our 4 days journey has begun.

Africa, Summit of DRC Virunga Nyirangongo Volcano, Episode 127

While in the Democratic Republic of Congo visiting Goma and the Virunga National Park I discovered a killer volcano with the largest lava lake in the world. Yes, I was probably the last one to find out, but that didn't stop me from checking it out. A hell on earth. It took all day to reach the rim. A sheer knife sharp edge on which tourists have fallen to their death. This is not a western theme park setting. No ropes or railings. No lights, Pitch black at night and almost zero visibility in the morning. Oh and a massive caldron of molten rock spewing poisonous gas within a rocks throw of our freezing tents?

Mountain gorillas and Nyiragongo volcano at Virunga NP

In July of 2016, we had the opportunity to visit Africa’s oldest national park, the beautiful Virunga in Democratic Republic of the Congo.

We spent one day with the Nyakamwe mountain gorilla family and on the following day hiked to the Nyiragongo Volcano, camping on the rim of the volcanic crater and watching the Earth’s largest lava lake.

Park rangers are fighting to protect the world’s last about 880 mountain gorillas who live here – from poachers and the threat of oil companies - even though it is protected as a Unesco world heritage site. If you want to know more about this amazing place visit their website:

Virunga National Park, 2014

A few clips I shot whilst in Virunga National Park in The Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa, in 2014.

These are some personal videos and out-takes. I was there on an assignment for production company Grain Media (who made the Oscar nominated feature documentary Virunga) filming various environmental and sustainability projects that were taking place at that time, following a period of civil unrest.

The gorillas you see in this video are in a gorilla orphanage a special project to protect young gorillas whose parents had been killed by poachers. This project is featured more in the documentary film.

About Ubuntu Voyages:
Ubuntu Voyages specializes in gorilla trekking, mountain hike and wildlife safaris in Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Our mission is grounded in the philosophy of Ubuntu. The word “Ubuntu” is a Nguni word. Nguni languages are a group of bantu languages spoken in southern Africa by Nguni people. The nguni proverb “Ubuntu ngumtu ngabanye abantu” describes the core principle of Ubuntu and is translated as a person is a person through other persons. This can be rephrased as ‘I am, because of you’. The word ‘Ubuntu’ is also present in many bantu languages spoken in the DRC, Rwanda and Burundi; and it means “the fact of being a human”.
Our mission is to offer opportunities for people from different cultures and backgrounds to meet and connect. To strengthen and spread the philosophy of Ubuntu through tourism; and to go beyond psychological and geographical barriers between people for common interest of happiness in living and working together for a sustainable development. And finally to promote African values, among them solidarity and hospitality. Remembering that the later has been known as the characteristic of the Democratic Republic of Congo when it was called Zaire.

Congo Gorillas and Nyiragongo experience with Kwafrika Travel

This 3 days Nyiragongo Volcano and Mountain Gorillas exposes you to Congo’s startovolcano that features the world's largest lava lake and to the mountain gorilla in the Virunga national park in Congo. Visitor encounters with these Great apes entirely involves exploring their general behavior and lifestyles (feeding, mating, nesting, body gestures and others) while they are in their natural habitat. Nyiragongo’s summit rim is largely devoid of vegetation and is sometimes dusted with snow. From the rim, visitors can peer down into a churning lava lake and see and hear hot gases exploding up though a mosaic of molten lava.

Safety Advice

Safety Advice - Virunga National Park The Complete Guide.
Before planning a trip to Virunga National Park, it is essential to understand that the park is known as one of the most dangerous in the world. This is due to fallout from the Rwandan Genocide and the First and Second Congo Wars, which resulted in dozens of rebel groups residing in and around the park, illegally exploiting its natural resources to fund their operations. Violent confrontations between rebels and park rangers are commonplace. To date, over 200 rangers have been killed since the early 1990s. From June 2018 to February 2019, the park was closed to tourists due to ongoing violence, and even though it has reopened, there have been fatal incidents as recently as February 2021. With all of this in mind, it is generally rangers and not tourists who are the victims of these atrocities, and every precaution is taken to keep visitors to Virunga National Park safe. .

Hike to Erta Ale Volcano | Ethiopia Vlog 8

On 7th June 2019, I visited Erta Ale Volcano from Mekele. We made two hikes to the top of the volcano- one in the evening and the second one during dawn. In both of them, we were not able to see the lava because there was too much smoke. My guide told me that the lava was last seen in December 2017. An eruption back then had shrunk the lava lake and since then it's not been visible.
