Sydney Metro: the largest concrete pour at Waterloo Station

Big things are happening at Sydney Metro’s Waterloo Station with the largest concrete pour at the site now complete.

Weighing the equivalent of five fully loaded A380 planes, or 688 elephants, the concrete slab will form a solid foundation for a nine-storey building that will rise above the southern section of the future station.

Video transcript:

[Madellon Holt-Smith, Project Engineer, John Holland] This slab is equivalent to five fully loaded Airbus A380 airplanes, which is also equivalent to 688 elephants.

[Madellon] Today, we're pouring our second level 2 transfer slab. So, in this pour there's approximately 1100 meters cubed of concrete and 227 tons of steel.

[James Shi, Site Engineer, John Holland] So we have to sit down with the subcontractors and see how many trucks that we need, what's the concrete volume for this pour, and how long this is going to take. And we decided that we can manage around 18 trucks per hour and we have to utilise three locations as a waiting bay and get them all in cycles and get ready for the biggest concrete pour that we've had on the job.

[Nairy Topouzian, Assistant Development Manager, John Holland] So the slab that's being poured
today will become the base structure of the social housing building, which will house 70 social housing units across nine levels for the New South Wales Land and Housing Corporation.

The crew forms and pours cement over the top of the root cellar and wood house roof.

After the concrete is cured, dirt will cover the root cellar roof but a greenhouse with be built on top of the wood house’s cement floor. The wood stove in the wood house, below the greenhouse, will heat the house and also heat the greenhouse by natural convection.

The SLC Dept. of Airports is providing B-roll footage for media to use as The New SLC construction moves forward. This video highlights the first Terminal Tunnel Mat Slab pour, which took place on March 3, 2017. This is a significant pour as the Mat Slab is four feet thick. There were two concrete pump trucks and many concrete deliveries servicing this 1700 cubic-yards concrete pour. The duration lasted approximately eight hours

A quick video to document the newly installed concrete parking lot placed at the Indiana Ready Mixed Concrete Association building. Just a fun way to show the work and the amount of concrete needed to pave this place. Around 130 yards went into this pour. Mattingly Concrete did the work, IMI provided the concrete.
