The Forgotten PYRAMIDS OF SUDAN (better than Egypt)

WOWOW - TODAY WAS A TOP 10 TRAVEL DAY OF MY ENTIRE LIFE.

I made it to SUDAN, country #173 and one that I've long desired to visit for many reasons, but none more than to see the ancient (forgotten) pyramids. There are more pyramids (200+) in this tiny section of Sudan than in all of Egypt, and they are just as old and impressive!

My Sudanese friends and I took a camel ride to explore around the area and we were the only ones around. Not another soul in sight.

If you ask me, this experience was about 10X more enjoyable than the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, which is now flooded by tour bus after bus. Add this place to your list!

Mystery in Sudan: The Lost Pharaohs | TRACKS

David Adams’ journey takes us into a Sudan we rarely see. On the flat waters of the Nile, he hears the creaking of the rigging catching the wind as river-travelers have for thousands of years. While the battlements of ancient fortresses standing on shore are occasional reminders of the region’s violent past, he is able to contemplate that era from the relative peace of the wide river.

There are More Pyramids in Sudan Than in Egypt #Africa ????????

The Mysterious pyramids of Sudan

There are more pyramids in Sudan (Nubia) than in Egypt (Kemet) #Africa
Pyramids in Africa are unique figures that symbolise beyond the advancement of Africa as a continent. Take for instance, till date many believe civilization started from Egypt. The Great Pyramid at Giza is the largest in the world, filling 13 acres at its base. At 481 feet tall, it was the tallest structure in the world until the advent of modern skyscrapers.

The pyramid builders used 2.3 million stone blocks, each weighing between 2.5 and 15 tons, to construct the Great Pyramid. Pyramids today stand as a reminder of the ancient Egyptian glorification of life after death, and in fact, the pyramids were built as monuments to house the tombs of the pharaohs. Death was seen as merely the beginning of a journey to the other world.

Inspired, and Heavily influenced by the Egyptians, is the Nubian pyramid of Sudan. The Nubian kings built their own pyramids 1000 years after Egyptian burial method had changed.

In a desert in eastern Sudan, along the banks of the Nile River, lies a collection of nearly 200 ancient pyramids—many of them tombs of the kings and queens of the Meroitic Kingdom which ruled the area for more than 900 years. The Meroë pyramids, smaller than their Egyptian cousins, are considered Nubian pyramids, with narrow bases and steep angles on the sides, built between 2,700 and 2,300 years ago.

Why are theses Pyramids mysterious: The Egyptians were the first humans to believe in After life. This first was the reason behind the creation of the pyramids. These pyramids were built over a millennium to serve as burial chambers for their royalty.

They believed that the pyramids eased the monarchs' passage into the afterlife, and the sites served as centers of religious activity.

48 Hours in Sudan: Pyramids, Dervishes, and UNESCO Sites!

48 Hours in Sudan

After having explored most of the Middle Eastern countries reachable within a short flight from Dubai, we just had to do one last unexpected trip before saying goodbye to the UAE - so we picked exploring the Sudan with our friends!

A short non-stop Flydubai flight away, Sudan is home to many pyramids (more than Egypt, fact!), welcoming people, unique traditions and unbelievable raw beauty.

A true gem and yet-to-be-discovered off the beaten path destination, Sudan has so much to offer for a quick escape from the UAE, that you’ve probably never even heard about let alone dreamed of visiting.

48 Hours in Sudan | Day 1: Market, Sudan Museum and Dervish Ceremony

After a convenient 4-hour Flydubai flight from Dubai arriving in Khartoum at 10pm (no time to waste!), we received a warm welcome at the Khartoum International Airport by our tour company driver, who brought us to our hotel for the first night, the Acropole.

Useful information:

Currency: Sudanese Pound
Language: Arabic
Time change: UTC/GMT +2 hours
Best time to visit: October-April
Dress Code: Conservative
Alcohol: Sudan is a completely dry country - do not bring any alcohol in!

We started our 48 Hours in Sudan with an early visit to the bustling Friday market at the center of Khartoum. Food, clothes, even kitchen appliances were displayed, and the atmosphere was truly incredible. We felt totally in sync with the ambiance, and not completely as out of place as we could have imagined.

Make sure to not film or take pictures too much though, as locals don’t particularly like it, understandably. Unlike so many markets or souqs around the world that we have visited, there was no being bothered, hassled or barked at, everyone was just living their lives and we were so happy to just observe. Such is the case in a country with such few tourists.

We then visiting Omdurman, the old capital of Sudan, the Mahdi’s tomb and the Khalifa’s house, we headed to the Sudanese National Museum, home of many beautiful objects and two full temples rescued by UNESCO and moved from the Lake Nasser area, when it was flooded by the water.

As we do with most trips, we pulled a classic Jeff and Anne, barely researching anything before going, so it was a great start to our trip getting to know a little bit better the country we were in. Some people prefer to travel after exhaustive research into where they are going, we like to do the complete opposite, just show up and discover what is around us as it happens.

Around 4pm each Friday, a very unique Dervish ceremony takes place, near the tomb of the sufi leader Ahmed al Nil. The Dervishes ceremony gathers women, men and children together every week to pray, dance and sing together in one of the largest cemeteries in Khartoum, outside of a small mosque. We were lucky enough to be warmly welcomed around the prayers.

Not far from here there is an interesting site of petrified wood, an ancient forest with hundreds of huge trunks strewn out completely in the middle of a vast desert with little explanation. Later on we reached the necropolis of Nuri. After a little walk among these ancient ruins, we stumbled upon the pyramid of Pharaoh Taharqa dominating high above the the others. After the visit we reached our beautiful Nubian Rest-House, located just at the foot of the Jebel Barkal, with the small town of Karima situated nearby. We ate some delicious food, took a hot shower to get rid of the dust and passed out.

48 Hours in Sudan | Day 2: Jebel Barkal and Meroe Pyramids
After a delicious breakfast at the Rest-House, we headed over to visit the Jebel Barkal area. A landmark in the Nubian Desert, the Jebel Barkal can be seen from a few dozen kilometres whilst still in the open desert.

A huge rock mountain in the middle of desolate sand a few hundred meters from the banks of the River Nile.

At the foot of this wonderful and isolated red sandstone mountain, considered holy since the ancient times, there is a big temple, dedicated to the Pharaohs of the New Reign and to their patron, Amon. Amon's ancient Pure Mountain, the Olympus of the Nubians, was the religious Nubian heart for more than 1000 years.

The Jebel Barkal archaeological sites are on the World Heritage list and the royal necropolis of the ancient city of Napata, the Nubian capital before the Meroitic period, had a large number of pyramids, located in three different places: few hundred metres north of Jebel Barkal; a dozen kilometres southwards from the holy mountain, in El Kurru; in Nuri...

The deserted pyramids of Sudan

Located in the northern part of Africa, Sudan holds a history and mystery which is unmatched. There are about 220 Nubian pyramids in this Sudanese capital, Khartoum, which are about 4000 years old and are UNESCO's World Heritage Sites, yet one cannot find many tourists.

Sudan - Pyramids of Meroe (More pyramids in Sudan than you can count)

What can I say about Sudan? Well it's beautiful, and so were the people we met in Sudan.

The main tourist attraction if you can call it that (we didn't meet any other tourists) were the Nubian pyramids of Meroe. But before we get on to those and other historical sites we had to visit Khartoum (the capital city of Sudan) to rest and to get our permits for the various locations.

We camped out at the university campus in Khartoum and were honoured to meet and share breakfast with the football team, we were invited into homes for meals, shown where the Blue Nile and White Nile met, offered help around every corner, it truly was a pleasure.

The completely unique experience of being the only people to be exploring the pyramids of Meroe and the archaeological digs at various temple locations is one we will never forget. Meroe and Sudan is one of the places that I would have loved to go back to and visit again one day, hopefully it will be safe to do so again one day.

Land Rover Africa Overland
--------------------------------------------
Twenty years ago my wife and I packed up our life in the UK and set off to drive overland in our Land Rover Defender with the aim of driving all the way to the Cape Town in South Africa, a journey which will take us from coast to coast along the length and breadth of Africa.

Because this journey was twenty years ago, there were no smartphones, no google maps, and no digital cameras. The photos taken on the journey were on transparencies, designed to be projected. I have taken photographs of some of those slides for the purpose of showing in this video.

Forbidden Tunnel inside the Bent Pyramid of Dahshur

When I was alone inside the Bent Pyramid which is located in Dahshur south of Giza and the Great Pyramid, I noticed a door that was locked. It had a hole in the fence so I decided to climb through to see what is inside.
I found myself in a long and steep passage and there was a pit which was covered with wooden planks. Also there was a very strong wind coming from this tunnel.
On the right side there was a white limestone block that was sticking out of the floor which made it look very special.
I continued to walk inside the tunnel and I switched off my flash light to see if there was any light coming from the end of the passage. It was pitch black dark.

Sudan: The amazing Meroe Pyramids and Sufis

More than 40 years of civil war has killed 1.5 million people in Sudan. Stoning and flogging are still legal punishments there. Despite its reputation, today has an amazing archaeological treasure that many people know about. This is amy extraordinary adventure to a country with very warm welcoming people. Sudan - Meroë pyramids

An updated and extended version of this video clip can be found here:

Meroë is an ancient city on the east bank of the Nile approximately 200 km north-east of Khartoum, Sudan. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Kush for several centuries. The site of the city of Meroë is marked by more than two hundred pyramids in three groups, of which many are in ruins. They have distinctive size and proportions of Nubian pyramids.

We visited Sudan on our overland trip by car (a Toyota LandCruiser 4WD campervan) from the Netherlands to South Africa and South America; see our channel for hundreds of clips. More clips of Sudan can be found here:

Found Temples and Pyramids in Sudan

ANCIENT TEMPLE & PYRAMIDS OF MEROE
### All footage shot and edited with a smartphone (Tecno Camon CX) ###

There are over 200 pyramids in Sudan which predate the once in Egypt.

Went camping with some Sudanese, Kenyan and American friends and it was one of the most incredible times I've had here in Africa. The purpose of the camp trip was to promote camp life and adventure to Sudanese people, particularly women who have a disadvantage in doing what they love to do as their culture gives them a lot of restrictions, psychologically and lawfully.

We pitched our tents under the night sky with bright stars atop The ancient civilization of Meroe. Also got to climb Jebel Barkal where we oversaw the temples and the Nile. Temperatures reached a staggering 45 degrees but it was totally worth it.
