Sunrise Hike to Pulpit Rock (Preikestolen) in Norway | Rain, snow, and fog but still awesome!

Join our sunrise hike to Pulpit Rock (Preikestolen) in Norway! Doing this hike in April was a gamble because of the weather, but we had the usually-crowded trail and Pulpit Rock all to ourselves. We started the hike at 2am to get to the cliff in time for sunrise. Although it ended up being foggy at Pulpit Rock, it was still incredibly beautiful.

We did this hike with Outdoorlife Norway and really liked our guides (and Molly)! We know someday we will come back to try the hike to Pulpit Rock again in hopes of a clear view, but we seriously enjoyed this hike and our experience.

4K | Preikestolen Cliff (Pulpit Rock) in Norway

The Preikestolen (Norwegian for pulpit) is a natural occurring rock platform with a near vertical 600 m (2000 ft) cliff at the Lysefjorden in southern Norway near Stavanger.
I visited the pulpit rock in spring 2017. On the first day it was foggy throughout the day. The next morning the clouds cleared up and the stunning view was visible. The sunny weather attracted hundreds of visitors.

I convinced my lovely girlfriend that hiking the pulpit rock at night in time to see the sunrise from the top of that magnificent plateu was well worth it.

300.000 people take this hike every year. Takes about 2 hours from basecamp to goal.
604 metres over sea level.

Tom Cruise was on Preikestolen to film a scene to Mission Impossible 6 in 2018.

To make long story a bit shorter, first time I hear about Preikestole were somewhere back in 2012 when my Father (Miljenko Maric) returned from Norway. Back then I only considered it as interesting place to visit. Yet, I got attached to the idea of seeing it in June 2013. When me and my friend (Matej Delic) planned our back packing trip to Norway. To be honest it was listed as higher priority, but as soon as we arrived we realized that Norway's standards is too much for our students budget. We was happy to reconcile with Moss and beautiful nature around it ( Yet, I didn't give up. Since almost a year ago I moved up to the North of Denmark I could feel that I'll never be closer to it than now. So I was constantly seeking for the opportunity to reach it.

Thanks to the good friend of mine Philippe Nicolini, plan was realized and it will always stay in my mind. Funny, in reality it's only 604 meters high cliff. Yet, once you get there you'll discover true power of that place. Now I'm not surprised they call it Preikestolen or Prekestolen (English: Preacher's Pulpit or Pulpit rock). It's the place where you can easily find yourself or spend hours trying to discover it. If you think you're so brave try to stand on the edge of the cliff. It will, at least shake up your confidence. Nevertheless, you can also spend a day looking at Lysefjorden, laying beyond, and enjoy beautiful Norwegian nature. Note that it's one of the most visited natural tourist attractions in Norway. Due to it's increasing popularity ( around 150k -200k visitors per year) you might be bother by the crowd. But spending a peaceful night and experiencing a sunrise is than something you want to do.
