Polperro - Cornwall - England - 4k Virtual Walk - July 2020

Walk with us around Polperro in July 2020. Following the recent lockdown, the shops, restaurants and pubs are starting to open and tourists are returning once again.

The walk starts at the top of the village near the Crumplehorn Inn. We make our way down through the narrow streets to the harbour and beach.

**************************************************************

Polperro lies just a few spectacular miles along the coast from Looe. Sheltered from the ravages of time and tide in its cliff ravine, it's an enchanting jumble of cottages, each one unmistakably the work of a Cornish fisherman.

Polperro has a small sandy beach located just outside the main breakwater. The beach is in front of Willy Wilcox cave, believed to have been used by smugglers.

One of the most popular places in Cornwall, the village of Polperro is undoubtedly one of the prettiest.

Packed tightly into a steep valley on either side of the River Pol, the quaint colour-washed cottages and twisting streets offer surprises at every turn: the Saxon and Roman bridges, the famous House on Props, the old Watch House, the fish quay, and the 16th century house where Dr. Jonathan Couch lived, naturalist and grandfather of the celebrated writer Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch.

With its protected inner harbour full of colourful boats. Polperro is still a working fishing village, although tourism provides the main source of income. Attractions include a Museum of Smuggling and a Model Village.

POLPERRO CORNWALL | Tour of Polperro near Looe from village to beach and harbour! | 4K Walking Tour

POLPERRO CORNWALL | Tour of Polperro near Looe from village to Polperro beach and harbour! | 4K Walking Tour of this famous Cornish seaside village and tourist destination!
Also watch our tour of Padstow Cornwall -

One of the most popular seaside villages in Cornwall has to be Polperro Looe which is most definitely one of the most requested walking tours on the Gimbal Walk TV channel.

So we took our cameras and drove the short drive from Looe, parked up in the car park just outside the village and walked down into Polperro village itself to see what the fuss was about and why our viewers had requested this seaside village so much!

Our walk takes in the village as well as Polperro beach and of course Polperro Harbour (the village is still a working fishing village as well as a busy holiday destination)

The village was a notorious smugglers village during the 18th and 19th century where all the villagers conspired to smuggle goods in and avoid the duty placed on them.

Over the years though Polperro has become famous for boat building and fishing before the recent and dramatic rise in tourists visiting for holidays and day trips, turning the main income for the village into tourism.

So when you're here and visiting Poperro Cornwall come here and see how busy it is with people enjoying their holiday on the beach, staying in the local hotels, guesthouses, bed and breakfasts and enjoying all the things to see in Cornwall and Polperro!

Also remember to try the Cornish Ice Creams and the Cornish Pasty's here - delicious!

When shopping in Polperro Cornwall remember to pop into the small gift shops and all the cute little backstreet shops as well as those on the main road, and you will find all kinds of amazing gifts to buy whilst on your break or holiday and take home with you as a holiday souvenir!

I hope you enjoy this 4k Walking Tour video of what it's like in Polperro 2021. If so why not subscribe to see where I go next!

St Ives is a seaside town, civil parish and port in Cornwall, England. The town lies north of Penzance and west of Camborne on the coast of the Celtic Sea. In former times it was commercially dependent on fishing. The decline in fishing, however, caused a shift in commercial emphasis, and the town is now primarily a popular seaside resort, notably achieving the title of Best UK Seaside Town from the British Travel Awards in both 2010 and 2011. St Ives was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1639. St Ives has become renowned for its number of artists. It was named best seaside town of 2007 by The Guardian newspaper.

St Ives is on the western shore of St Ives Bay, its harbour sheltered by St Ives Island (a headland) and Smeaton's pier. Close to the harbour, in the old part of the town, the streets are narrow and uneven while its wider streets are in the newer parts of the town on rising ground. The town has four beaches: Porthmeor a surfing beach, Porthgwidden a small sandy cove, Harbour by the working port and Porthminster which has almost half a mile of sand. St Ives has an oceanic climate and has some of the mildest winters and warmest summers in Britain and Northern Europe. It is therefore a popular tourist resort in the summer, and also benefits from an amount of sunshine per year that is above the national average. The South West Coast Path passes through the town.

The Sloop Inn is an inn in St Ives, Cornwall, England, located on the wharf. It is one of the oldest inns in Cornwall, the public house is dated to circa 1312 although the present building was built in the 17th or 18th century. The Sloop Inn was popular with artists during the Victorian era.

Padstow is a town, civil parish and fishing port on the north coast of Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The town is situated on the west bank of the River Camel estuary approximately 5 miles northwest of Wadebridge, 10 miles northwest of Bodmin and 10 miles northeast of Newquay.

Traditionally a fishing port, Padstow is now a popular tourist destination. Although some of its former fishing fleet remains, it is mainly a yachting haven on a dramatic coastline with few easily navigable harbours. The influence of restaurateur Rick Stein can be seen in the port, and tourists travel from long distances to eat at his restaurant and cafés. This has led to the town being dubbed Padstein by food writers in the British media.

However, the boom in the popularity of the port has caused house price inflation both in the port and surrounding areas, as people buy homes to live in, or as second or holiday homes. This has meant significant numbers of locals cannot afford to buy property in the area, with prices often well over 10 times the average salary of around £15,000. This has led to a population decline.

The approach from the sea into the River Camel is partially blocked by the Doom Bar, a bank of sand extending across the estuary which is a significant hazard to shipping and the cause of many shipwrecks. For ships entering the estuary, the immediate loss of wind due to the cliffs was a particular hazard, often resulting in ships being swept onto the Doom Bar.

The Black Tor ferry provides a scenic ride across the the River Camel between Padstow and Rock. The pedestrian ferry runs every 20 minutes taking around 5-10 minutes as opposed to a 30 minute car journey. The ferry operates throughout the year although there are no Sunday crossings between mid-November and mid-February.

Padstow's old railway line is now the Camel Trail, a footpath and cycle path which is popular owing to its picturesque route beside the River Camel. One of the railway mileposts is now embedded outside the Shipwright's Arms public house on the Harbour Front.

The South West Coast Path runs on both sides of the River Camel estuary and crosses from Padstow to Rock via the Black Tor ferry. The path gives walking access to the coast with Stepper Point and Trevose Head within an easy day's walk of Padstow.

The Saints' Way long-distance footpath runs from Padstow to Fowey on the south coast of Cornwall.

The Camel Trail cycleway follows the course of the former railway from Padstow. It is open to walkers, cyclists and horse riders and suitable for disabled access. The 17.3-mile long route leads to Wadebridge and on to Wenford Bridge and Bodmin, and is used by an estimated 400,000 users each year generating an income of approximately £3 million a year.

Padstow is best known for its 'Obby 'Oss' festival, taking place on May Day every year. The festival starts at midnight on May Eve when townspeople gather outside the Golden Lion Inn to sing the Night Song. By morning, the town has been dressed with greenery and flowers placed around the maypole. A procession of the Red Obby Oss and the Blue Obby Oss dance around and through the streets of Padstow for twelve hours, a custom that has been held for centuries, thousands of people gather in Padstow's narrow streets to catch a glimpse of the famous Obby Oss.

Port Isaac - Cornwall - England - 4K Virtual Walk - July 2020

Join us for a full virtual tour of Port Isaac, Cornwall. Our walk starts on the South West Coast Path with glorious views of the picturesque fishing village of Port Isaac. Made famous by the British television series Doc Martin and the male singing group Fisherman's Friends. Our walk was filmed on a beautiful summers day in July 2020. From high up on the South West Coast Path we make our way down Roscarrock Hill. Here you will see Doc Martin's Surgery (Fern Cottage) a picturesque detached stone cottage with sensational views over Port Isaac harbour, the quaint village and the sea. The cottage is used as the surgery in the television series, Doc Martin starring Martin Clunes. Fern Cottage is available for rent as a 2 bedroom self catering holiday cottage. We wander down to the harbour and beach and explore the cute narrow streets with gorgeous cottages, many available to rent for holidays. Our walk finishes on the South West Coast Path on the opposite side to where we started.

Due to technical issues with the sound on the day we've had to unfortunately replace the audio. The audio used has been matched as best as we can so hopefully it won't affect your enjoyment.

Port Isaac has been an attractive fishing village since the early fourteenth century. Its narrow, winding streets are lined with old white-washed cottages and traditional granite, slate-fronted Cornish houses, many of which are listed as of architectural or historic importance. From the Middle Ages until the middle of the 19th century, Port Isaac was a busy port handling various imports and exports, including coal, timber, pottery and Delabole slate. In fact the name Port Isaac is derived from the Cornish Porth Izzick meaning the 'corn port'. After the advent of the railways, it became principally a fishing port.

Doc Martin is a British television medical comedy drama series starring Martin Clunes in the title role. The programme is set in the fictional seaside village of Portwenn and filmed on location in the village of Port Isaac, Cornwall, United Kingdom. Nine series aired between 2004 and 2019, with a television film airing on Christmas Day in 2006. The ninth and most recent series aired on ITV from September 2019, and streamed in the United States and Canada on Acorn TV. In April 2020 the tenth series was confirmed by director Nigel Cole.

The Fisherman's Friends are a male singing group from Port Isaac, Cornwall, who sing sea shanties. They have been performing locally since 1995, and signed a record deal with Universal Music in March 2010. Whilst essentially an a cappella group, their studio recordings and live performances now often include traditional simple instrumentation. Their performances combine traditional songs of the sea with more contemporary folk music and a large dash of humour. In the original line-up, all of the members of the group grew up within half a mile of Port Isaac harbour except for John McDonnell who is a Yorkshireman. Three were fishermen, and the others are linked to the sea through service as coastguards or lifeboatmen.

In 2009 BBC Radio presenter Johnnie Walker was in Cornwall on holiday and happened to come across two of their home made CDs. Walker's manager, Ian Brown, then travelled to Port Isaac and was able to negotiate a recording contract worth £1 million for them with Universal Music Group who released their first commercial album the following year. Their first album with Universal, Port Isaac's Fisherman's Friends, was recorded in St Kew Parish Church, Cornwall, and released in April 2010.

They have performed at the 2010 Cornbury music festival in Oxfordshire, the Glastonbury Festival on several occasions, typically on the Acoustic Stage, but on one occasion performing on the Pyramid Stage and the Cambridge Folk Festival. The band have also appeared at Towersey Festival, Wickham Festival, Beautiful Days, Costa Del Folk, Shrewsbury Folk Festival, Tunes in the Dunes, Boardmasters and Celtic Connections. They also often perform in Port Isaac, regularly singing on the platt (beach) in the summer for charity.

The 'Fisherman's Friends' feature film was released in cinemas nationwide in the UK on 15 March 2019. All members of the band had cameos in the film. The singing is a blend of the voices of the group themselves and of the actors. In May 2019 a sequel titled Fisherman’s Friends 2: Bound For South Australia was announced which will take them from performing at Glastonbury to struggling to put their second album together.

Bude is a seaside town in north east Cornwall, England. There are a number of good beaches in the Bude area, many of which offer good surfing conditions. Bude was the founder club in British Surf Life Saving. Summerleaze, Crooklets and 'middle' beach, are all within the town.

In 1953 Bude became home to the first Surf Life Saving Club in the UK, while the popular lido Bude Sea Pool opened in 1930. Bude Sea Pool is a partially man-made tidal swimming pool or lido in the rocks at Summerleaze Beach, Bude, Cornwall. The pool was previously administered by Cornwall Council but lost public funding in 2010/11. The Friends of Bude Sea Pool, a volunteer charity organisation, was formed in May 2011. The group aims to preserve, improve and enhance the sea pool as an amenity for the benefit of the community and visitors to the town. The pool is open 365 days a year, but only lifeguarded by RNLI during high seasons. The RNLI and the Bude Surf Lifesaving Club use the pool for training and exams. Bude Sea Pool is a popular attraction and is ranked number one visitor attraction in Bude.

In the 18th century there was a small unprotected tidal harbour at Bude. The Bude Canal Company built a canal and improved the harbour. Around twenty small boats use the tidal moorings of the original harbour during the summer months. Most are sport fishermen, but there is also some small-scale, semi-commercial, fishing for crab and lobster.

Bude is home to a number of sports teams including Bude RFC – the town's rugby club, and Bude Town FC – the local football club. Bude is the host town of the North Cornwall Cup, a large youth football event held every August. Bude & North Cornwall Golf Club is ideally situated within the town centre. Bude is also home to the Bude Cricket Club.

POLPERRO Cornwall UK - 4K Walking Tour - January 2022

Join us for a walk in Polperro, Cornwall, UK. Polperro is a beautiful Cornish fishing village in south Cornwall, England. Situated 4 miles west of Looe, 7 miles east of Fowey and 25 miles west of the major city and naval port of Plymouth. Polperro is a popular tourist destination, particularly in the summer months, for its idyllic appearance with tightly-packed ancient fishermen's houses which survive almost untouched, its quaint harbour and attractive coastline. During the summer months Polperro is a hive of activity, but what is it like in the winter? We take a walk around Polperro village and harbour to find out.

Tourism became Polperro's main industry during the 20th century. The village is accessible by air via Plymouth or Newquay, by train via Looe railway station, by road and by boat. It was estimated that the village received about 25,000 visitors a day during summer in the 1970s. Visitors are no longer permitted to drive cars into the village, having to leave them in the main car park at Crumplehorn to the north of the village and walk through the half-mile length of the village to its harbour. The village's quaint but narrow streets make driving difficult.

Attractions of Polperro include the South West Coast Path, the 630-mile long and established walk from Dorset to Somerset which passes through the village, and offers day walks along the local scenic coastline, in particular to nearby Talland Bay on the coast path heading East. Westwards, the path passes three large beaches en route to Fowey: Lansallos Beach, Lantivit Bay and Lantic Bay. Within the village is the Polperro Heritage Museum of Fishing and Smuggling, situated on the harbourside in an old fish processing warehouse, which houses interesting photographs of the village's history among other popular displays. Guided walks are available in the village, and boat trips can be taken from the harbour to view the coastline which can offer sightings of dolphins and seals.

The village has several restaurants as well as seven pubs. A holiday and caravan park is situated outside the village to the northeast at Carey Park.

Fishing was traditionally the principal occupation of Polperro families. For centuries the village has been a pilchard fishing and processing port. Fish are drawn for feeding off the South Cornwall coast in late summer bringing rich pickings for local fishermen. Once ashore, the fish were salted and pressed and the oil was collected as a by-product and used for heating and lighting. Polperro pilchards were exported throughout Europe.

Shoals of these fish diminished in the 20th century and pilchard fishing died out as Polperro's mainstay in the 1960s, however approximately twelve commercial fishing vessels still operate from the harbour catching flatfish, scallops, crabs, monkfish, ray, pollock, bass and cod. Fresh fish and seafood are available for purchase at the quayside from time to time.

Thanks for watching, we hope you enjoy!

Polruan is a small fishing village in the parish of Lanteglos-by-Fowey in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is bounded on three sides by water: to the north by Pont Creek, to the west by the River Fowey and to the south by the English Channel and neighbours village Bodinnick to the north, connected by a 4-mile walk along the hill tops. Polruan is very steep and well protected from the prevailing winds and Polruan Pool is a haven for small boats.

Polruan has a history as a small fishing village known as a location for much old boat building. St Ruan was the first to occupy the top of Polruan Hill the point where St Saviour's ruin still stands today. The ruin of St Saviour's church on the hill above Polruan dates to the 8th century. It was a landmark for shipping, and also, in times of war, a vantage point for observing the approach of enemy shipping to the strategically important Fowey harbour. The name Polruan derives from the Cornish for harbour of a man called Ruveun.

Polruan also has a blockhouse fortification built in the 14th century that guards the entrance to the river Fowey, one of a pair—its partner being situated on the Fowey side of the river. The Polruan blockhouse is well preserved due to the efforts of various enthusiastic councillors and conservationists on the Polruan side of the river, in contrast to the blockhouse in Fowey. Between the two blockhouses was strung a defensive chain to prevent enemy ships entering the harbour, the chain being lowered for friendly vessels. This was primarily used during the wars with the Dutch.

The Harbour Commissioners Yard was formerly a sardine processing factory which also supplied electricity for the village. The gun battery at Peak Point held an anti-shipping gun of which the mounting pin can still be seen. The battery gave the name of Battery Park. The wall at Peak Field was used for rifle practice. Motor torpedo boats were repaired at Pont Creek during World War II. The overhanging trees hid the boats from surveillance aircraft. The remains of cradles for boat repair and some hull parts can still be seen preserved in the mud on the foreshore. Some boat-building still takes place in Polruan: Toms's Yard builds and repairs boats and has reputation for handling trawlers and also for hand building in wood.

The Polruan ferry crosses the river to and from Fowey every 15 minutes and operates every day of the year. There is also a passenger ferry to Mevagissey. Cars can be ferried to Fowey from Bodinnick which is 4 miles away. When the car ferry from Bodinnick is not running, Fowey and points westwards can be reached by car via Lostwithiel.

Polruan is one of a now increasing number of Cornish places to use lookouts to help marine craft in distress. Many lookout towers were demolished in the 1980s to save costs. Now, thanks to the National Coastwatch Institution (NCI), a voluntary charity, many of the surviving old coastguard lookouts and towers are being re-manned by qualified volunteers. The Old Coastguard Lookout at Polruan was among the first to be re-commissioned in this way. (The current HM Coastguard headquarters for cliff rescue, including the equipment store, is on St Saviour's Hill adjacent to the NCI Station, above the main village carpark. Exercises of the HM Coastguard continue.) The current Polruan NCI Station overlooks the Fowey estuary and also St Austell Bay beyond the village.

Walk Polperro | South West Coastal Path | Cornwall | June 2021 | 4k ????????

Join us on a walk from Polperro's harbour exploring part of the South West Coastal path between Polperro and Polruan. Designated as a coastal Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Area of Conservation, this stretch of undulating coastal path runs along the clifftops affording spectacular views of the waters below.

The walk filmed in this video takes place on a very small section of the coastal path - probably about half an hour's worth at the most - and, unfortunately, the camera I was using overheated a few times, so if the footage appears to jump forward a lot, it's because I had to edit out the corrupted parts of the video. I hope what's left gives you a taste of just how stunning this walk is!

I hope you enjoy this walk and it inspires you to visit this beautiful part of the Cornish coast! Also, for more content from locations in Cornwall and beyond, please subscribe!

Picture-perfect Polperro | Cornwall | June 2021 | 4k ????????

Situated just south of Looe on the Polperro Heritage Coastline, this historic fishing and smuggling village is home to around 1,500 people. It still operates as a working fishing port and the fishing vessels that motor along the coast for their catch can be seen unloading at the docks at high tide. For those interested in vacationing in the village there are many pretty holiday cottages to rent as well as pubs, restaurants, cafe's, shops, art galleries and other attractions, like the Polperro Model Village, to keep vacationers and day trippers occupied.
