Polar Bear Safari in Svalbard, May '22

Travel journal of my trip to Svalbard in May '22 to appreciate and photograph arctic wildlife and pristine landscapes.

In May the sun is up 24 hours (midnight sun), mountain slopes are still covered with snow and ground is beginning to clear.

I flew from Norway and spent few days before the safari in Longbyaren, the main town in Svalbard. I took a nine days Polar Bear Safari small group expedition organized by Natural World Safaris on board the 37m ice-strengthened Kinfish, a former polar research vessel. Sailed around the western coast of Spitsbergen, the largest island of Svalbard Archipelago. Before flying back, I spent another day in Longyearbyen.

In this video you will see many arctic landscapes and glaciers including famous Magdalenefjord and July 14th Glacier, from Bellsund in the south to the start of the Arctic Ocean, over the 80ºN parallel.

Arctic wildlife we encountered: lucky to see some polar bears even from far, reindeer, walrus, various seals, fulmars, guillemots, eiders, snow buntings, barnacle geese, red-footed geese, kittiwakes, ptarmigans, glaucous gulls, puffins, sanderlings, sandpiper.

If you enjoyed this video, please show your appreciation by pressing like.

Thanks for watching.

I have just arrived in SVALBARD, Northern Norway. It's the northernmost inhabited place on earth, with more polar bears than residents. In the summer months, like right now, the sun brightens up the sky 24 hours a day, and in the wintertime, it's exactly the opposite.

I'm here a few days early before our Hurtigruten expedition sailing kicks off to Eastern Greenland and Iceland! Stay tuned for some fascinating stories about the people, culture, wildlife and nature from the Arctic over the coming 2 weeks!

Just curious, how many of you guys have actually heard of Svalbard before?

(January 2019) Video review of the Hurtigruten Expedition Cruise „The ultimate Svalbard Expedition“ with Hurtigruten MS Spitsbergen in July 2018.

In this video you’ll see the daily program onboard of MS Spitsbergen during our expedition cruise around Svalbard. See what kind of activities they offer. Enjoy beautiful pictures of the nature and landscape of Svalbard as well as footage of polar bear families. Unfortunately the polar bears were very far away (between 800 - 1500 meters). Therefore please excuse the picture noise in the video.

You’ll also see all ship areas like restaurant, explorer lounge, bar, jacuzzi, sauna, fitness room, shop, the outdoor explorer deck, the bridge and our room. We had a „O2 Polar Outside Cabin“.

If you like the video give us a thumbs up and don't forget to subscribe our channel. Thank you for watching!

Meet Svalbard’s locals! ????‍❄️ Polar Bear encounters in May.

In Svalbard, there are more polar bears than people. Svalbard has a human population of around 2,500 and an estimated polar bear population of 3,000. It is one of the best places on earth to see and photograph polar bears in their natural home. During the summer months, polar bears are commonly sighted on the north-west coast of Spitsbergen, Svalbard’s largest island, and hunting on the sea ice to the north.

Note: We always ensure that the polar bears are not disturbed and it’s important for us to point out that on any expedition polar bear sightings are never guaranteed.
