This Polar bear was spotted walking in Ny-Alesund during our stay on 19 July 2011 from 2.00am - 4.00am. Probably it was looking out for some easy food!

In Svalbard, there are more polar bears than people. Svalbard has a human population of around 2,500 and an estimated polar bear population of 3,000. It is one of the best places on earth to see and photograph polar bears in their natural home. During the summer months, polar bears are commonly sighted on the north-west coast of Spitsbergen, Svalbard’s largest island, and hunting on the sea ice to the north.
Note: We always ensure that the polar bears are not disturbed and it’s important for us to point out that on any expedition polar bear sightings are never guaranteed.

Svalbard Polar Bear Trip Introduction
This video is an introduction to my two-week journey with Waterproof Cruises & Expeditions in the Arctic Circle off the coast of Spitsbergen aboard the Vestland Explorer in June 2023 with Rinie van Meurs as the lead expedition guide.
It is my first time spending so much time in a single area on a vacation. We saw polar bear behavior rarely seen. Both the wildlife and nature were amazing to see, especially in unpredictable weather. The ship was truly a yacht with an exceptional crew. It was an experience of a lifetime. The expedition leader witnessed something for the first time.
I will make some documentary videos about my polar bear observations in Svalbard.
I was not asked or paid to make this video. It is my opinion and my tribute to Marlynda Elstgeest, Rinie, and the ship’s crew.

Dangerous Encounter with hungry Polar Bear in Svalbard
Researchers who camped in Svalbard were approached by hungry Polar Bear in Svalbard. Fortunately, no one was hurt and the bear was scared away by flare gun.

SVALBARD - 10 days expedition on the French Polarfront ship
Join me on this account of my 10 days expedition on board of the Polarfront ship in September 2019. The Polarfront is a small-scale cruise ship that can take up to 12 passengers, allowing very intimate moments with wildlife with minimum impact on nature.
During our expedition, we met countless walruses and seabirds, seals, reindeer, an Arctic fox. We had to exceptional encounters with polar bears: the first one, a solo big male on the sea ice, who gave us a magnificent show while being all relaxed, and the second, a female with her two big cubs that were relaxing on a beach in front of snowy mountains.
This video includes still photographs from the moments that I could not film. It is not that easy to run a one man photo and video show on a ship!
All the moving images are filmed with the small sensor DJI Osmo Pocket, so please indulge the graininess of some of the scenes when the ambient light was lower.
