Istria (Slovenia) Vacation Travel Video Guide

The Slovenian-Croatian peninsula of Istria is one of Europe‘s oldest settlement areas, the Pearl Of Adria with an eventful history and much multicultural flair; a rich interface between both Mediterranean and mediaeval cultures. In Koper, Istria’s economic centre and most important harbour city, the Old Town can be entered through the last remaining twelve gates of the city’s former defensive wall. In its heyday the city boomed with wine, oil, salt and fish and many merchants and craftsmen from Italy settled there and the Palazzo Belgramoni Tacco became the region‘s museum. The mediaeval town of Piran is located on a narrow promontory that juts out into Piran Bay like the bow of a ship. On a cliff above the old town is the Sanct George Church, and a bell tower on the town’s fortified walls provides a splendid view of the mainland, a maze of roof tops and the main square. Travelling further south, Poreć is picturesquely situated on a peninsula and City Hall reveals much of its history. In 1267, Poreć, as Istria’s first city, was affiliated to the Serenissima and palaces, squares and religious buildings were constructed. In the fertile countryside lies yet another Istrian gem, Hum, the ‘smallest town in the world’ with its well-preserved gate, cobblestones and single lane. Portorož is the only real resort on the Slovenian Riviera with several hotels lining its waterfront and since the Danube Monarchy it has been a fashionable meeting place of the elite of Central Europe. Istria is a beauty with many faces, a rediscovered Adria dream and an almost forgotten paradise.

Watch the full episode: Slovenia enjoys a 29-mile stretch of Adriatic seafront, and its best stop is the town of Piran. As with most towns on the Adriatic, Piran was long ruled by nearby Venice and retains its Venetian flavor. In fact, the town's officially bilingual: Slovene and Italian. Today, its town square is enjoyed by visitors and locals of all generations — savoring the good life where the Slavic world, the Alps, and the Mediterranean all come together. Travel Guide to Piran, Slovenia

Piran is an ancient port city, which is considered Slovenia's Gem on the Adriatic.
It's the biggest city on Slovenia's 30 miles of coastline, sandwiched between Italy and Croatia.

Piran is a 90 minute drive from Slovenia's capital city of Ljubljana.
It's a pedestrian-only city, so you'll have to park in a large garage outside the city, and take a shuttle in.

⏱ Video Timeline ⏱
00:00 Intro to Piran, Slovenia
00:20 Ljubljana to Piran
00:28 Parking in Piran
00:39 Tartini Square, Piran
00:46 History of Piran
00:56 Italy's influence in Piran
01:05 View from Piran's Walls
01:18 Adriatic Sea in Piran
01:28 Hotels in Piran
01:42 Walking in Piran
01:49 When to Visit Piran
02:05 Driving in Piran

Italy's influence is evident from 100 years of Italian rule, in the architecture and food.
While Piran is full of land-locked Europeans vacationing, you'll find very few Americans.
On clear days, you can look from the walls above the city of Piran, and see Italy to the north and Croatia to the south.
Hotel Zala is one of just a few hotel options in Piran, and we enjoyed our stay (especially the delicious breakfast they cook each morning!)
If you have a rental car, it'll make it easy to visit the nearby Istrian cities of Pula, Premantura, Porec, and Rovinj.

Things To Do In Piran,Slovenia - Why Should You Visit Piran ?

#slovenia #europe #piran #slovenija #travel #traveladvisor #travelblogger #travelvlog #attractions

Why Should You Visit Piran ?

Charming. Lovely. Appealing. Enchanting. These are just a few adjectives that could be used to describe the peninsula town of Piran. It’s one of the best coastal cities in Slovenia. Situated between Italy and Croatia on the Slovenia Adriatic Coast, the town of Piran is surrounded on three sides by the tranquil turquoise sea.

For travelers visiting Slovenia, Piran is a top destination that shouldn’t be missed! We are sharing our list of the best things to see in Piran.

Things To Do In Piran,Slovenia

Visit Tartini Square

Tartini Square (Tartinijev trg / Piazza Tartini) is the elegant Italian-style plaza at the heart of Piran. Oblong in shape, it faces onto Piran’s petite inner dock on one side, and on the other is fringed by a row of neoclassical facades painted in a subdued rainbow of pastel hues.

Tartini Square was completed 1894 and is the most visually beautiful part of Piran – both when viewed from ground level and from above (more on that in a moment).

When wandering the square on foot, pay special attention to the blue-and-white Municipal Hall and the Gothic-style Benečanka (Venetian House), the only building on the square that retains its original 15th century facade. See if you can spot the Lion of Saint Mark – the Venetian Republic’s unmistakable insignia – inscribed in stone.

The prominent yellow building, Tartini House, is now a small museum dedicated to the square’s namesake, violinist and composer Giuseppe Tartini. His statue stands in the plaza and inside the museum, you can view his violin. The canary yellow Teatre Piran on the edge of the harbour is another particularly pretty facade.

CLIMB THE BELL TOWER FOR EPIC VIEW

The most iconic views of Piran can be found from the top of the 45-metre-tall Zvonik Campanile Bell Tower, which was built in 1608 adjoining St. George’s. If the design looks familiar, there’s a reason for that: It’s actually a replica of the famous St. Mark’s Campanile in Venice.

Unlike the tower over St. Mark’s Square, Piran’s sadly lacks an elevator – the only way to get to the top is by navigating a spiral wooden staircase of 146 steps!
Don’t worry though, it’s more than worth the climb. Once you catch your breath, you’ll be rewarded with a bird’s eye view over Tartini Square and the inner marina.
A narrow open-air balcony wraps around the entire tower so you can photograph Piran from all angles. The view eastwards towards the cliffs and Strunjan National Park is also very pretty.
Four hefty bells set inside the tower ring out at 15-minute intervals. If you happen to be on the stairs when they start chiming, shield your ears – the noise is deafening!

Visit the Church of St. George

Seeing St. George’s Church is a must when visiting Piran! It’s impossible to miss the hilltop church, but we strongly recommend walking up to the church to get a better view.

Standing in front of St. George’s Church, the Renaissance façade looms high overhead. The imposing effect was intentionally designed as a deterrence to possible invaders arriving by sea.

Watch Piran Sunsets

Watching the sun set is one of the top Piran, Slovenia things to do – and the Medieval walls of Piran are the place to do it!
Through the arches of the remaining hillside town walls of Piran, visitors have picture-perfect view of the setting sun over the sea. St. George’s Church and the Piran Bell Tower capture the last light of the day. The defensive walls of Piran that were built on Mogoron Hill between 1470 and 1534. The fortifications include eight towers and mark the eastern edge of town. We think the elevated platform is the best place to watch the sunset in Piran.
Meander the colorful streets of the old town
The old town center of Piran is full of charming little cobblestone streets. Take some time to stroll around and explore the narrow alleyways.
No destination is the best destination in Piran and the narrower the alley, the better. If done right you’ll find some pretty sketchy, narrow and steep stairways and beautiful colorful streets with overhead passages from one house to the other.

Koper (Istria) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Vacation travel video about destination Koper in Istria.
Koper is a major harbour city in Istria which is located on the Slovenian Riviera. The old town can be entered through the last of the twelve gates of the city’s former defensive wall. A stone coat of arms, various reliefs and inscriptions highlight the long history of the city in which for five hundred years Venetian rule shaped its destiny. An archway in the Praetorian Palace leads to a classic Venetian square, the Titov Trg which dates back to the fifteenth century. The Piazza is one of the most beautiful Venetian squares of the entire Adriatic region and the cathedral which frames the square has numerous architectural styles. Brollo, an area just beyond the centre of the city, served as a collecting basin for rainwater which was drawn by two wells from a cistern below. The Gothic, Fontico, was used for the storage of surplus grain which was distributed to the people in years of hardship. Today Koper is Slovenia’s window to the world and the country’s only seaport.

Piran Slovenia | Things To Do in Piran Slovenia

Piran is the most beautiful medieval town on the Slovenian coast. It is located on a headland in the southwest corner of Slovenia.
Piran was first settled during the days of the Roman empire. The town was part of the Republic of Venice from the 13th to the end of the 18th century when it was annexed to the Austrian Empire. After the First World War, the town was ceded to Italy. Piran was annexed to Yugoslavia in 1954, and became a part of independent Slovenia in 1991.
The old port town with remnants of a medieval wall is protected as a cultural and historical monument. It consists of a main square, a harbour filled with fishing boats, a jetty and a promenade lined with restaurants. Piran is surrounded by beautiful nature. Long, wide paths trace the coast from north to south and are ideal for walking or cycling.
Here is a quick overview of things to do in the town:

Piran (Istrian) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Vacation travel video about destination Piran in Adriatic’s Istrian.
High up on the cliffs of the Adriatic’s Istrian Coast are the remains of a city wall. The wall was built in the fifteenth century in order to protect against the Turks who were attempting to reach the peninsula from the mainland. Their goal was the Venetian maritime town of Piran, the most beautiful place on the Slovenian Riviera, an enchanting mediaeval town. The charm and flair of old alleys reflect the history of this idyllic town whose origin dates back to the fifth century. Ancient Greeks, Romans, Slavs, a German Emperor, the Venetians and the Habsburgs, they all wanted this town and it prospered accordingly. For more than five centuries the town was under Venetian rule, a time when it took on the form which we see today and from the wide-ranging trade network of the Serenissima, Piran profitted well.

Piran, Slovenia ► Video guide, 9 min. | 4K

Piran is a town in southwestern Slovenia on the Gulf of Piran on the Adriatic Sea. It is one of the three major towns of Slovenian Istria. The town is known for its medieval architecture, with narrow streets and compact houses. Piran is the administrative seat of the Municipality of Piran and one of Slovenia's major tourist attractions. Until the mid-20th century, Italian was the dominant language, but it was replaced by Slovene following the forced expulsion of Italians after World War II.
