Philipsburg, Montana Travel Guide: An Old But Lively West-Mining Town

The draw of Philipsburg, MT, an old West-mining town that is still very much alive starts with the painted mainstreet and sweet spots to stop like Sweet Palace, a candy store where you will find hundreds of varieties. But the best stuff is what’s made in house, like the 50 kinds of fudge, 72 flavors of taffy and 20 varieties of caramel. Next door you will find Sapphire Gallery, where you can grab a bag of gravel guaranteed to have a sapphire inside for 25 bucks. When it comes to a spot to stay, check out the Broadway Hotel, a spot that was once a general store back in the mining hey day. Today, current owners have renovated the building into a charming hotel with 9 rooms that are all decorated to a different theme ranging from Route 66 to mining and even ranching to play homage to a current industry in the town.

Outstanding Day Trip to Granite Ghost Town - Spring 2021 in 4K/UHD - near Philipsburg, Montana MT.

Join us as we explore the hills a few miles east of Philipsburg, MT. We explored the Ghost Town of Granite including the Blaine Mine, Mills A&B, Algonquin Mine, Hasmark, Trout Mine/Mill and a few sites in-between. It was a great early spring day in May, 2021.

This sequence was captured with GoPro Hero8 & Hero9 cameras, twin Garmin Mini dash-cams, Samsung Galaxy and iPhone 12 cellphone, a Sony RX10 IV and a DJI Mavic 2 Pro with a Hasselblad camera. Thanks to my friends Rich, Bill and Dave who captured a lot of stills and additional video for this adventure.

SOLD | Montana Ranch For Sale | Great Divide Ranch | Philipsburg, MT

Looking for Montana ranches for sale? This property has already sold, but check out the rest of our YouTube channel for current listings or visit our website at

The Great Divide Ranch offers 146± deeded acres and has accommodations for up to 60 guests. The property has the potential to be a fabulous private estate, lodge, outfitter destination, cooperate retreat, or bed and breakfast. Nestled between the Pintler, Flint, and Sapphire Mountain Ranges, this gem is surrounded by public land. There are multiple sources of live water on the ranch, and the Middle Fork of Rock Creek meanders through it for over a half mile, offering fabulous fishing opportunities. Moose Lake borders the northern boundary of the ranch with a private boat dock and lake access. Additionally, there is a large, spring fed pond on the ranch which was stocked with trout in years past. Its water remains cool all summer and provides a perfect spot for waterfowl to rest in seclusion.

The original homestead is a log cabin constructed in the early 1900’s. It rests on the edge of the meadow and overlooks the creek, offering serene views and a charming glimpse of the past. The ranch is 25± miles from Philipsburg, a quaint 19th century mining town, and is nestled in the foreground of the Pintler Mountain Range. It’s difficult to describe just how beautiful it is. Outdoor enthusiasts love this part of Montana due to its panoramic mountain vistas and abundant wildlife. The ranch is an expansive campus of cabins, homes, entertainment venues, and a commercial kitchen/dining/bar combo. In order to comprehend this location’s possibilities, you must see it. Evenings are best spent enjoying nature’s symphony, which drifts pleasantly to one’s ear from the river, or lounging on the shores of Moose Lake with its deep aqua-green water.

Recreational venues are available on and off the ranch. The newly constructed library cabin is located on the lake shore and offers a restful reading sanctuary. Anglers will eagerly test their skill at catching a trout on the private half mile of Rock Creek, which draws fly rod enthusiasts from afar. The stream originates in the deep natural springs of the Sapphire and Pintler mountain ranges and provides moisture for the verdant pastures along its banks. Deep breaths of crisp morning air are a delightful way to start a fair-weather day, which can end in balmy relaxation on the shores of the lake. Picturesque wilderness areas with trailheads are just a few miles from the ranch. Equestrian enthusiasts will be thrilled with hundreds of miles of trails to explore the wild and scenic mountain ranges. ATV users will appreciate all the accessible public land that can be explored.

The Great Divide ranch is surrounded by three distinct mountain ranges, the Flint Range to the northeast; the Pintlers to the south; and the Sapphires to the southwest/west/northwest. Recreational opportunities abound in all three of these ranges. The property is move-in ready for horses, with barns and large, irrigated pastures. Mountain lakes dot these ranges and do not have frequent visitors, offering an authentic wilderness experience. The majority of these backcountry lakes impart fantastic fishing opportunities, making a long hike or horseback ride rewarding for anyone who wants to get away from it all or enjoys the aggressive strike of a hungry trout when a line is cast. This 146-acre ranch is a dramatically beautiful river/lake property with incredible wildlife habitat.

Ghost town in Montana - Getting to Garnet and some of the cool buildings

Part of the big summer trip to Montana was spent looking for cool old ghost towns and Garnet is one of the coolest. It is remarkably well preserved and full of old buildings and artifacts.

Virginia City, Montana - Ghost City with Life Left

While in Montana we made a trip out to Virginia City. This town was a booming gold town at the turn of the century with thousands flocking to find wealth in the mountains. Almost half of the 300 buildings are from pre 1900s. A very unique feel to this town that is still very rich in history and much more.

Drink It In Montana featuring Philipsburg Brewing Company in Philipsburg, Montana

Nolan and Cathy Smith opened Philipsburg Brewing Company in 2012. The brewery now operates two locations, “The Vault” is located downtown and “The Springs” located just up the hill at the original site of the Kroger Brewery which opened in 1875.

Philipsburg is located in the Pintler Mountains along Montana Highway 1 (the Pintler Veterans’ Memorial Scenic Highway). In addition to the high quality wheat and barley produced throughout the state, Philipsburg Brewing Company has access to an incredible water source with a spring located right on property.

The springs offer a clean pallet for head brewer Mike Elliott to craft the Philipsburg beer. In addition to the brewery, Nolan and Cathy own Montana Silver Springs which bottles the clean natural spring water. Both their beer and water is bottled in the resealable Alumi-Tek bottles.

Philipsburg, Montana came to life with the boom of silver in the late 1800s, but as the bottom fell out of silver, the thing that kept Philipsburg on the map was their cache of Montana sapphires. Today, the most popular activity in the area is gem mining. In addition to sapphire mining, Discovery Ski Area and Georgetown Lake bring hundreds to the area with no shortage of outdoor recreational opportunities.

Montana Ghost Towns: A Trip Through The Area's Storied Past (2019 Travel Guide)

To really get to know Montana, take a road trip to its old mining camps and ghost towns, places that tell the story of its Wild West gold, silver and copper past, along with their booms and busts. Start with a visit to Virginia City, a place miners flocked in 1863 in search of a big time payday. The old west Victorian gold mining town sprung up and today a walk along a wooden boardwalk shows partially restored historic buildings. Today, you will find period displays illustrating what life was like during the booming frontier days with everything from outfitted stables, old time carriages and toy stores complete with home made dolls and blocks.

Next up, we visit Bannack State Park you will find one of America’s best preserved ghost towns. Bannack was the state’s first capital (until it moved to Virginia City after gold was discovered here) and in 1862 became the first place gold was discovered. Today, the town is preserved as it was during the gold-rush-era with more than 100 log buildings, some with decorative facades. During its peak, the town was home to hotels, bakeries, blacksmith shops, stables, a grocery store, brewery and saloons.

Butte, Montana: My Favorite Forgotten Montana Boom-Gone-Bust Town

Evel Knieval's childhood playground, Butte Montana is rough and tumble Wild West frontier city through and through. Located in the Silver Bow Creek, the city was put on the map as a mining boomtown in the late 19th century and lays claim to be the “Richest Hill On Earth” thanks to the profitable minerals extracted underground. During its heyday, Butte grew into a thriving city and is now home to the second largest national historic district after New Orleans.

On a visit you don’t want to miss an Underground Walking Tour. A highlight stop is the the Roaring 20’s Rookwood Speakeasy in the basement of the former Rockwood Hotel. Inside, a musty smell adrifts and you can imagine the room in its heyday in the 20’s with jazz, flappers and gambling.

With such an extensive mining history, a trip to Butte should also include a trip to the World Museum of Mining, which is built on actual mine yard: The Orphan Girl. The tour also lets you peep into a shaft station, used to bring miners up and down to the veins below the city of Butte. Towards the end of the tour, we were all told to turn our headlamps off to see what total darkness looks like, and then with just a small flicker, what it was like with the faint glow of candles workers depended on in the beginning mining era.

It should come as no surprise that a town with a rugged individualism mentality like Butte's also has its own distillery making spirits with names tied to Butte’s mining past. At Headframe Sprits, owned by Butte raised John McKee and his wife Courtney, you will find everything from gin and whiskey to vodka and bourbon. Head to the old fashioned bar tasting room to sample the liquor and the cocktails they create from it. The top seller is the Orphan Girl Bourbon Cream Liqueur, which is named for the mine. It’s similar to Bailey’s in taste and is mixed with Root Beer to create my favorite, the Dirty Orphan Girl cocktail.

Lion City and Hecla Mines - A Montana Ghost Town - near Melrose, Montana MT

Lion City and Hecla Mines - A Montana Ghost Town - near Melrose, Montana MT

Join us for a 15 mile journey starting at Melrose, traveling west through Glendale and working our way up Trapper Creek drainage to Lion City and Hecla Mines located 9,000 feet above sea-level.

The road was a bit rough in some places and excellent in others. A high clearance vehicle or an ATV is recommended. No cars, motorhomes or tow trailers should attempt this road.

This was my first visit to Lion City. A few years ago I captured the ghost town of Glendale (with the smelter chimney stack) and the charcoal kilns (in the next drainage) with my first drone.

We couldn’t have asked for a better day! The weather was grand but we had some wind (the drone could care less)! We had six cameras taking stills and video. I could have made this video over two hours long but then again, who would want to watch it? My goal was to produce a 7 minute video but I could only compress it down to 14 minutes to tell my story.

The Hecla Mines on Lion Mountain are amazing. You can see adits (openings to horizontal mines) to 20 miles of underground tunnels. Miners had to climb stairs to enter these openings in order to go to work extracting ore that contained silver, lead and copper. The ore was transported to the stamp mill four miles away by overhead cable cars and then transported to Glendale for smelting. All the trees you see have grown since the 1890’s since all timber was stripped from the hills to feed the smelters blast furnaces.

Silver mining came to a virtual standstill with the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act in 1893. Sporadic mining occurred until 1922.

This sequence was captured with a GoPro Hero5 Session (front view), Mobius action cam (inside view), DJI Phantom 3 Advanced (aerial views), Canon Vixia HFS100 (cabin views), Panasonic camera (mine views) and a Samsung Galaxy 5 (miscellaneous views). Editing was completed with Adobe Premier.

Many thanks to Peter, my friend from Austria and his dog Emily for the entertainment and most of the still images used in this production.

Virginia City, Montana ~ 1863 Gold Rush Ghost Town

In May 1863, a group of prospectors were headed towards the Yellowstone River and instead came upon a party of the Crow tribe and were forced to return to Bannack. On May 26, 1863, Bill Fairweather and Henry Edgar discovered Gold near Alder Creek. The prospectors could not keep the site a secret and were followed on their return to the gold bearing site. A mining district was set up in order to formulate rules about individual gold claims. On June 16, 1863 under the name of Verina the township was formed a mile south of the gold fields. The name was intended to honor Varina Howell Davis, the first and only First Lady of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. Verina, although in Union territory, was founded by men whose loyalties were thoroughly Confederate. Upon registration of the name, a Connecticut judge, G. G. Bissell, objected to their choice and recorded it as Virginia City.

Within weeks Virginia City was a boomtown of thousands of prospectors and fortune seekers in the midst of a gold rush.
