Who are the Mayans? documentary - my time with the indigenous people of Guatemala

Guatemala was country number two on my hitchhiking trip from Mexico to Colombia.
This is a short documentary I made about the history of the Mayans, the struggles their culture has faced in the past due to war, and how those problems still affect them in the modern day. There is also an interview with Oralia, and indigenous lady who I stayed with for three weeks during my time in Guatemala.

The Culture and Traditions of Guatemala

A short video about the country of Guatemala and its culture, food, holidays, and more.

English Transcript:
Guatemala is a country in Central America that is home to a diverse landscape, delicious food, and a multitude of cultural traditions.
Geography: Guatemala is 275 miles from North to South by 250 miles East to West. Within these 40,000 square miles, the land shifts from mountainous regions, to jungles, to volcanoes. In Guatemala City, the capital of Guatemala, the temperature typically fluctuates between 62 and 73 degrees, earning it the name “Land of Eternal Spring.”
Economy: Guatemala’s economy is mostly agricultural, with its main exports being coffee, sugar, cardamom, bananas, and cotton. Agricultural exports contribute to about 75 percent of Guatemala’s export earnings.
Demographics: Guatemala’s population is about 16.95 million people as of May 4, 2017. The population is approximately 47% latino, 47% indigena, 5% garifuna and 1% other. Spanish is the main language, among many others, and Mayan Spirituality, Catholicism, and Evangelical Christianity are the main religions.
Food: Common foods in Guatemala include tortillas and tamales, black beans and rice, and wheat in the form of pasta and bread. Guatemalan food is traditionally made in the home, and going to restaurants to eat is not very common.
Holidays: The Guatemalan calendar is determined by the Roman Catholic Church. Because of this, their most important holidays include Christmas, Advent, Easter, and Three Kings Day. Other holidays include the Day of the Dead, which celebrates family members who have passed away, Revolution Day, which remembers the day Jorge Ubico was overthrown in 1944, and New Year’s Day, which they celebrate by wearing a new outfit.
Hobbies: In Guatemala, there are many things you can do fill your free time. You can enjoy sports, weave clothing and fabric, and dance. Most Guatemalans hand weave textiles, either to sell or making into clothing. Popular recreational activities include soccer, white-water rafting, spelunking, rock climbing, and kayaking. Popular dances include Cumbia and Punta.
Current Events: Today, Guatemala has recently endured some political troubles. In 2015, their President, Otto Pérez Molina was discovered to be heading a corruption ring. Their former vice president who had resigned not long before was arrested and over 14 cabinet members resigned. After its recent problems, Guatemala is back on its feet.

Indigenous Culture and Rituals in Guatemala - 4K Scenic Film With Calming Music

Guatemala is home to a rich and diverse indigenous culture, with over 20 different Maya groups present in the country. Each group has its own unique customs, traditions, and rituals. Some of the more well-known indigenous cultures in Guatemala include the K'iche', Kaqchikel, Tz'utujil, and Mam.

Indigenous communities in Guatemala have a strong connection to their traditional spiritual beliefs and practices, which often involve offerings and ceremonies to honor their ancestors and the natural world. The Maya calendar, based on the cycles of the sun, moon, and planets, plays an important role in many rituals and ceremonies.

One of the most famous indigenous ritual in Guatemala is the Day of the Dead or Dia de los Muertos is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. This ritual is a celebration of life and death, honoring the deceased ancestors and welcoming them back to the living world. The celebration is marked by colorful altars, decorated with candles, flowers, and offerings of food and drink, and people also dress up in traditional costumes, and they dance to commemorate the dead.

Additionally, traditional Mayan healing practices, such as the use of medicinal plants, massage, and spiritual ceremonies, are still widely used in indigenous communities in Guatemala.

It's worth noting that the Mayan culture is still very much alive in Guatemala and other Central American countries, and the customs, traditions, and rituals continue to be passed down from generation to generation.
