Penrhyn, Cook Islands

Penrhyn, also known as Tongareva is the largest and northernmost atoll of the Cook Islands. Penrhyn's lagoon, 275 square kilometres in area, dwarfs its surrounding motu, which total only six square kilometres. Its isolation, lack of resources and infrastructure, and declining population of around 200, make it a very difficult and expensive place to visit. However, on the other hand being so isolated and having a small population has allowed nature to thrive giving locals the option to be totally subsistent as the land provides more than enough food to go around. This video of Penrhyn gives a little insight into what this beautifully wild island has to offer.

Palmerston Island is one of those places we’ll remember forever. It’s the most remote place we’ve ever sailed, but that isn’t what makes it so memorable. The islanders have completely immersed us into their world from the moment we set our feet in the sand.

When we decided to buy a boat and set off into the deep blue, I dreamed of all the possibilities and experiences we would have. But I never expected it to play out so vividly in reality.

Yet, here we are, far away from civilization, living off coconuts and fish, playing with free spirited island kids and seeing firsthand what life is like when you live isolated with 34 of your relatives.

Penrhyn hat Die Geheimnisvollste Lagune Der Südsee

Alles Was Du Über Das Faszinierend Mystische Penrhyn, Auf Den Cookinseln, Wissen Musst

Niemand weiß also, was sich in der geheimnisvollen Lagune so befindet…

7 Nights on Rarotonga in the Cook Islands – flying on Jetstar’s inaugural flight. July 2023

7 Nights on Rarotonga in the Cook Islands – flying on Jetstar’s inaugural flight and staying in a local Airbnb. July 2023

Left Sydney at 9:30pm and arrived at 7:00am the same day. Crossing the International Date Line can mess with your head for a minute. Flight time was less than 6 hours going to Rarotonga and closer to 7 hours coming back. Brilliant place for a quick getaway.

We stayed at a fairly basic Airbnb but the location (Southern part of island) was amazing. Walk out of our apartment and you are on the beautiful beach with snorkelling right out the front. This area was very quiet and perfect for us. 7 nights of lazy beach days, reading and walking, hanging with the island dogs and not much else.

We caught the local buses (the clockwise and anti-clockwise bus) for the first few days, which was a great way to orient ourselves. Hiring a motorbike for a few days was the best way to get around and Neil’s motorbike licence process was all part of the Raro experience. We were able to lap the island a few times (32kms), visit the Muri night markets for dinner, Punanga markets, visit the yacht club for a cocktail (sounds fancy but isn’t) and drive the backstreets of Rarotonga to get a feel for local life.

We give Rarotonga 4.5 stars.

30th Anniversary CookIslands

Cook Islands, 30th Anniversary, Anniversary

Cook Islands / Südsee by Yachtfernsehen.com
