Flores Guatemala and its magic sunsets

Arriving in Flores, Guatemala:

List of Things to do in Flores Guatemala | Guatemala Travel Tips

Number 3 Thing To Do in Flores Guatemala: Walk, Eat Sunset. One of the best things to do in Flores Guatemala was to walk around the town, eat at many different places including my favourite home restaurant on the back side of the island of Flores and then watch the sunset.

Number 2 Thing To Do in Flores Guatemala: Get a boat, or do a boat tour, and enjoy Lake Peten. A huge lake, with Flores as just a little needle head. Much more of the lake to see than simply your view from the center of Flores, Guatemala.

Number 1 Thing To Do in Flores Guatemala: Tikal Ruins! Very famous ruins about 1 hour from Flores and a reason that a lot of people travel Guatemala.

A few Days in Flores, Guatemala

We spent the last part of our anniversary trip in the little town of Flores. It's a colonial town built on an island in the middle of Lake Peten. It was nice to spend a few days just relaxing and recharging our batteries. Had fun just wandering around, eating, and of course enjoying some beer other than Belikin! We did discover we must sharpen up our spanish abilities!

BLOG POST:

Until this trip, I was never a sunset kind of guy. Growing up in Vancouver, on the west, you always got beautiful sunsets during the short few days of summer. However, sunsets became a thing that I would use to collect my thoughts, wrap up my day, and slow down and take a minute for myself.

Being in Flores, Guatemala, I felt fortunate enough. A beautiful town, located on a little island, on a massive lake, surrounded by water. Simply stunning. I found a gym, went for a workout, and then went to the backside of Flores, where I was the day before, to a restaurant over looking the lake, to catch the sunset.

Belize to Flores, Guatemala:

As I ordered my food and watched the sun descend it started to give off the most beautiful colours. This part of Flores, in this part of Peten, Guatemala, it is so peaceful, and so quiet that I kept saying to the lady who owned the tiny restaurant you are very lucky. Guatemalan people are very humble and she simply smiled and joined me in starting at the sunset and replied ... yo se ... I know.

Since the ordeal in Belie, and the trip not starting off as expected, also, with the situation with the Guatemalan ATM system, I put those thoughts behind me and focused on the amazing sunset, and enjoy my last moments in the beautiful town of Flores, Guatemala, which I became extremely fond of.

Petencito Zoo, Flores, Lago Peten Itza, Guatemala, Central America, North America

Stay on the path while in the jungle or a jaguar may eat you. Don't swim in the lagoon or you might make the crocodiles mad. Have a good time, and I will see you in a few hours, said the boatman as he left us on our own. Arriving by boat to a tiny island in the middle of Lake Peten we knew that this was going to be a much different zoo experience than we were used to. Passing the ticket counter to the zoo we were immediately greeted by some free roaming boars. They seemed pretty friendly. I am sure if I wanted to they would have let me touch them. However after watching them roll in the mud I decided to let them be. Walking through the zoo, some of the animals were caged and others were not. Some of the more dangerous animals such as the jaguar and the puma were separated by big pits. Going to the zoo, one needs to be prepared for a lot of walking. Terrain wise I'd say it is comparable to the San Diego Zoo (a lot of going up and down hills) in California. The main difference is there are no shuttles within the zoo and you are walking through a very hot jungle (should of brought sun screen). After about 2 miles worth of walking we were done, but there are trails that go out to about 4 miles. The Petencito Zoo in Flores, Guatemala is a nice little diversion to those staying in the Flores/Santa Elena area. For 130 quetzales ($19 usd) you can hire a boat to the zoo. (That's per boat, not per person.) The boat fee also includes a scenic tour around Flores Island. From the boat we had great views of Flores, Santa Elena, and San Miguel. The zoo tickets cost us 40 quetzales ($7.25 usd). Being under 6 AJ wasn't required to pay. The zoo operates from 7 AM-5PM.
