San Diego to Los Angeles Drive - 15 Beautiful Stops

Planning a road trip from San Diego to LA? In this video, we’re going to highlight some of our favorite stops on the San Diego to Los Angeles drive.

Making the drive from Los Angeles to San Diego? Simply reverse the order of these suggestions.

Balboa Park is a 1,200-acre sprawling city park with beautiful Mediterranean and Spanish architecture and close to 20 museums to visit.

La Jolla is known as the jewel of San Diego. There are plenty of opportunities for enjoying all of the beauty La Jolla has to offer. Rent a kayak, go snorkeling, explore a sea cave, take a coastal stroll, or hang out with the locals. With water so clear, the tidepools in La Jolla are a must.

Not too far down the road from La Jolla is Glider Point in Torrey Pines, Southern California's premiere site for paragliding and hang gliding. Call the day you’re planning to visit to see if they’ll be flying, as flights are dependent on the weather and wind speeds.

Next, head to Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. Go for a hike on one of the many trails and take in views of the rare Torrey pine and maritime chaparral, along with miles of unspoiled beaches and a lagoon that is vital to migrating seabirds.

Further up the coast, you’ll find calming meditation gardens tucked away at the Self-Realization Fellowship in Encinitas. These internationally renowned gardens feature plenty of spots for you to pause, reflect, and meditate.

Some of our favorite things to do in the beachside town of San Clemente are to walk the beach trail, go out on the pier, or catch the train for a ride along the coast. The sunsets can be pretty spectacular here, too!

Dana Point is a great location to head out for a whale watching tour. The tidepools at the beach behind the Ocean Institute in the Dana Point Harbor provide a great opportunity for discovering local marine-life.

Another way to view local wildlife is to visit the Dana Point Headlands Conservation Area. This area contains over 150 species of plants and animals that are native to coastal Southern California.

Mission San Juan Capistrano is known as the Jewel of the California Missions. This mission was founded in 1776 as the 7th of 21 total missions found throughout the state.

Treasure Island Park is one of our favorite places in Laguna. The views here are unrivaled. If time permits, head to Victoria Beach next door to lay eyes on the distinctive Pirate Tower.

Another favorite destination of ours in Laguna is Crescent Bay Beach. We consider this to be one of the premier locations in Laguna for tidepooling. Make sure you visit when the tide is low, less than 1.5 feet is preferred. When visiting the tidepools be very aware of your surroundings and watch your step. We kindly ask that you simply observe and do not disrupt this fragile marine habitat.

Crystal Cove State Park offers 3.2 miles of beach and 2,400 acres of backcountry wilderness for hiking. Other great features of this wonderful state park include fun little caves to explore and unique rock formations.

Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is a 1,300-acre coastal estuary in Huntington Beach. Over 200 species of birds have been identified in the variety of habitats here.

Rancho Pales Verdes is a coastal city just south of the city of Los Angeles, atop the bluffs of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, and a little off the beaten path. Main highlights include miles of coastal walking trails and the Point Vicente Lighthouse and its accompanying Interpretive Center. The Wayfarers Chapel, designed by architect Lloyd Wright, son of Frank Lloyd Wright, is an architectural masterpiece and one of the world's most beautiful and evocative Organic Modern designs.

Our final recommended stop requires a detour… and a boat ride, or a helicopter ride if you’re feeling super adventurous. Catalina Island lies 22 miles of the mainland and is the perfect Southern California day trip… or truthfully, it’s a vacation in and of itself!

Paragliding at Torrey Pines Gliderport with my Family

The four of us went paragliding at Torrey Pines Gliderport near the Torrey Pines Golf Course we had just played that day. Bob was driving my tandem paraglider (is that what you call them?) This video shows 3 of the 4 of us taking off, all of us at some point flying along the cliffs and over some of the golf course, and then the landing. The best part is probably at 3:50 when 2 of them are over the ocean, touching their chutes together and then zooming off, but if you back up to 2:45 you can see us go over some pretty incredible mansions. You can see the golf course at about 5:30. This is great fun - highly recommended!

Paragliding over the Pacific

My short, but awesome paragliding trip off the Pacific coast at the Torrey Pines Gliderport (

First time I've done it, but now I'm hooked.

Though the naked people when I landed on Black's Beach at the end were a little freaky #nakedfurryhippies.

And the 660+ stair, 300 foot climb back up from the beach was exhausting. Next time, I'm hoping for more wind so we can land back on the cliff.

Thanks to Toyota and the #2014corolla for the opportunity!
