The Mascarene Islands: Episode 2 of 2
The Mascarene Islands, known as the Mascareignes in French, is a group of islands located in the Indian Ocean. They are situated east of Madagascar and they belong to the Republic of Mauritius as well as a French overseas territory. Their name derives from the Portuguese navigator Pedro Mascarenhas who first visited them in April 1512. These islands are considered an archipelago due to their common geology and history.

Mauritius has perfect beaches, cultural treasures, history and lush green mountain landscape. Reunion also has crazy white beaches, volcanic landscapes, waterfalls and cosy colonial towns.
Let’s see both Mauritius and La Réunion and all the top sights. We rent a car and drive to beaches, hiking spots and waterfalls. We visit the best snorkeling spots too and walk among the volcanos. Of course we brought the drone for perfect 4K footage.
Our journey through Africa is part of a one and a half year trip around the world. After the Middle East, Asia, Australia, North and South-America, the Caribbean and now Africa, this is the 27th destination. REUNION ISLAND: Ultimate Travel Guide to VOLCANOES & BEACHES in the Indian Ocean
This is the French paradise in Africa! Far away in the Indian Ocean is an incredible nature paradise island called La Réunion. Between Mauritius and Madagascar, this island has crazy white beaches, stunning volcanic landscapes, lush waterfalls and cosy colonial towns.
During our two week family holiday full of sun, beaches, hikes and great food, I show you all the highlights of La Réunion and all the top sights. At the airport in Saint-Denis we rent a car and drive to Boucan Canot, a hotspot near the best beaches. We visit the best snorkeling spot at Plage de l'Hermitage and drive down south to Saint-Pierre. We visit the volcanos at Piton de la Fournaise and see the best jungle waterfall Cascade de Grand Galet. Of course we brought the drone for perfect 4K footage. This video is the perfect guide for a family holiday to Reunion Island!
In the previous episodes you saw how we made a road trip from Cape Town to Kruger Park in South-Africa. We drove the Cape Namibia Route along the West Coast to look for animals in the Kalahari Desert. After that we crossed the border into Namibia, where we drove straight through the world's highest sand dunes in the Sossusvlei. We saw all the sights in Namibia and wend on for a safari in Etosha National Park. Lately we visited Botswana and Zimbabwe, to cross the border again back to South Africa. After the Kruger Park, we fly out of Johannesburg to take you island hopping on Mauritius and also the French island of La Réunion.
Our journey through Africa is part of a one and a half year trip around the world. We can even continue to travel indefinitely. On New Year's Day we started in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands. La Réunion is already destination number 26, after Oman, Cape Verde, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Tobago, Grenada, the Bahamas, the United States, Mexico, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Brazil, Qatar, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Australia, the Philippines, Zanzibar & Tanzania, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Mauritius. We have also been away from home for one and a half year now. Follow us on this world tour, now in La Réunion and then to many more beautiful destinations across the globe! Saint-Denis is the most populous commune in the French overseas departments and the nineteenth most populous in all of France. Its most emblematic site is the Piton de la Fournaise, an active volcano that can be climbed and rises to 2632 m altitude. The Piton des Neiges, a huge extinct volcano, and the 3 calderas of Reunion (natural amphitheatres formed by volcanoes that have collapsed) are also climbing spots.

La Réunion vue du ciel (4K) (Reunion Island from the sky)
Survol de la Réunion d'aujourd'hui (l'île intense).
La Réunion est une île située dans l'archipel des Mascareignes à 172 km à l'ouest-sud-ouest de l'île Maurice et à 679 km à l'est-sud-est de Madagascar. Elle constitue à la fois un département et une région d'outre-mer français où, une mosaïque de civilisations venues de tous les continents (Europe, Asie, Afrique...) vivent en parfaite harmonie et ont apporté leur savoir-faire et adapté leurs recettes pour créer une cuisine typiquement Réunionnaise. Sur ce joyau de 2512 km2, cohabitent deux volcans, le Piton des Neiges (3069 m) aujourd'hui éteint et le Piton de la Fournaise (2631 m) qui, depuis trois cent mille ans agrandit l'île, au gré de ses éruptions successives... Bénéficiant d'un climat tropical d'alizé maritime et située sur la route des cyclones, La Réunion abrite un endémisme exceptionnel. Les amateurs de sport nautique pourront apprécier les plages de Saint-Gilles, Saint-Leu, L’Étang-Salé et Saint-Pierre où ils pourront pratiquer leur activité favorite (surf, plongée, pêche au gros, voile, etc...).
Les randonneurs trouveront dans les 3 cirques et les montagnes inférieures, plus de 1000 kms de sentiers parfaitement balisés et entretenus, conditions essentielles pour profiter pleinement d'une nature qui se fera selon les lieux, primitive, exotique ou romantique.
Le Parc National de la Réunion figure depuis 2010, sur la liste des biens naturels inscrits au Patrimoine Mondial par l’Unesco, soit environ 40% de la surface de l’île.
La Réunion, n'est pas une île tropicale comme les autres, elle offre un vrai dépaysement à ceux qui recherchent autre chose que la sempiternelle image du touriste paressant sur une plage de rêve. Si, un seul mot devait remémorer l'image de l'île, ce serait celui de diversité.
