Pamban Bridge is a railway bridge which connects the town of Rameswaram on Pamban Island to mainland India. Opened on 24 February 1914[1], it was India's first sea bridge and was the longest sea bridge in India until the opening of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in 2010. The rail bridge is, for the most part, a conventional bridge resting on concrete piers, but has a double-leaf bascule section midway, which can be raised to let ships and barges pass through. Until 1988, the Pamban bridge was the only surface transport that connected Tamil Nadu's island of Rameswaram to the mainland.
In 1988, a road bridge was also constructed parallel to the rail bridge. This road bridge is also known as Indira Gandhi Road Bridge. The Pamban Road Bridge connects the National Highway (NH 49) with the Rameswaram island. It stands on the Palk Strait and between the shores of Mandapam (a place on the Indian mainland) and Pamban (one of the fishermen town in Rameswaram island). It was inaugurated by former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on 2 October 1988.This 2.345 km long Bridge took close to 14 years to be completed.

Dhanushkodi translates to the end of the bow. And the bow we are discussing here is Lord Rama’s.The legend has it that when Ravana kidnapped Sita and took her to Lanka, the events propelled Lord Rama to build the Rama Sethu Bridge also known as Adam’s Bridge. The bridge is faintly visible from a distance and has been confirmed even by geologists.
In the process of making a bridge to Lanka, which is mere 30 km from Dhanushkodi, Rama earmarked this as the place from where bridge construction would begin. He took his bow to mark the place and hence its name!
Years back Dhanushkodi on the Pamban Island was a bustling town along Southeast India’s coast with a railway station, police station, medical center, and basic amenities. Ferries from Chennai and to Talaimannar in Sri Lanka was a perfect tourist activity until the massive cyclone engulfed the entire region on 22nd December 1964. The cyclone, with tides as high as 20 feet, didn’t spare anything but ruins.
Post calamity, government, after analyzing the perilous location of Dhanushkodi, declared it as an uninhabitable place. Hence the place got popular as the ghost town. Today, apart from the 50-60 odd fishermen and a few local shopkeepers, nobody else lives here. The place continues to fascinate history lovers and experience seekers.

Pamban Bridge - engineering marvels in India - Malayalam with English (Subtitles)
The Pamban Bridge is one of the five sea bridges in India. It is the only bridge connecting the island with the mainland of Pamban Island, which is part of the Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu.
The bridge was built across the Pakistani Strait, which is located between the Pamban Island of Rameswaram. The century-old Pamban bridge is one of the engineering wonders of India.
The bridge construction started was in 1911 and was completed by 1914. The two-kilometre-long bridge was built on 143 pillars. This was the first sea bridge in India. Though it has been built since then, the Pamban Bridge is the longest sea bridge in India.
The bridge is designed so that the centre of the bridge can be raised for the ship's passage. When the ship passes through the Palk strait, the railway will become a gate and way to the ship. If the ship passes, it becomes an old railroad. It is the only bridge of its kind in India. This lift is a very innovative concept in view of technological growth in 1911.
The steel parts of the bridge were built in London and brought here. The bridge is still standing because it was built during the British period. You may have heard ads describing the strength of a snake bridge made of steel. The town of Dhanushkodi was washed away by the devastating cyclone of 1964. But the bridge had some damage and nothing else happened. The lift in the middle of the bridge was not damaged by the wind. The bridge was built today to repair damaged parts.
The Pamban bridge was designed for rail transport. Until a road bridge was built parallel to it in 1988, the railway was the only mode of transport. The bridge is also the pride of the Indian Railways. The bridge has earned the status of the longest extraordinary railway in the world. The Pamban bridge has been named the National Geographic Channel after its worldwide study.
It was in 2007 that the meter gauge bridge was converted into a broad gauge. it would cost Rs 800 crore to build the broad gauge and decided to stop the work because of lack of fund, then the initiation by the former president APJ Abdul Kalam and completed the broad gauge. Now the bridge is strong enough to go the goods trains. The strength of the bridge was increased in 2009.
Today, the Pamban Bridge is one of the major tourist attractions in India.
