Palau World Heritage - A Naturalist's Haven

A mini documentary by Silke de Vos.
All around the world nature is threatened by the onslaught of mankind. It is commendable that the state of Palau tries to stem the tide in its territory by far-reaching conservation measures. Almost 60% of the marine environment is protected. In 2009 Palau became the first shark sanctuary in the world and in 2012 Unesco added Palau's Rock Islands to the World Heritage List.

PALAU: Exploring the beautiful city of KOROR ????️????️, what to see! (Pacific Ocean)

Island of Koror in Palau, top sites to see and visit in the island of Palau in the Pacific Ocean! Here's a tour of the island of Koror in Palau in the western Pacific Ocean where I spent 4 days. Koror is the state comprising the main commercial centre of the Republic of Palau. Koror consists of several islands, the most prominent being Koror Island. The state of Koror contains about 70% of the population of the country.
Koror, formerly Corrora, one of the Caroline Islands that is part of Palau. The island of Koror lies in the western Pacific Ocean just southwest of Babelthuap island. Koror city served as the provisional capital of Palau until 2006, when the capital was moved to Melekeok in eastern Babelthuap. Partly uplifted coralline limestone and partly volcanic in origin, Koror has a land area of 3 square miles (8 square km) and rises to 459 feet (140 metres).
Palau is an archipelago of over 500 islands, part of the Micronesia region in the western Pacific Ocean. Koror Island is home to the former capital, also named Koror, and is the islands’ commercial center. The larger Babeldaob has the present capital, Ngerulmud, plus mountains and sandy beaches on its east coast. In its north, ancient basalt monoliths known as Badrulchau lie in grassy fields surrounded by palm trees.

PALAU: Inside a community ???? meeting house (Bai) in Koror! (Western Pacific)

Koror Island, Palau, Pacific Ocean - stunning traditional meeting house (Bai) in Palau (Palao) in the Pacific Ocean. Let's visit Palau which is an archipelago of over 500 islands, part of the Micronesia region in the western Pacific Ocean. We are going to visit Koror Island which is home to the former capital, also called Koror, and is the islands’ commercial center. We are going to tour a traditional meeting house (Bai) in Koror.
Most of Palau's important cultural symbols are derived from its chiefly past, in particular the gable of the community meetinghouse, or bai, one of which we are going to visit here. This impressive thatched building (bai) was the center of political, social, and artistic life. Today the decorated bai gable is used in most national and state seals and to decorate Palauan buildings. Other important symbols include the circle subdivided in four, representing wealth, and the half shell symbol of the giant clam shell, which also represents the foundation of Palau and the creation of humanity from the sea. The image of the traditional Palauan mother at the time of her first child ceremony symbolizes the wealth and fertility of this matrilineal society. Symbols of nationhood include the national flag, a full golden moon on a blue background, and the national anthem.

Palau /pəˈlaʊ/ (help·info), officially the Republic of Palau (Palauan: Beluu er a Belau), is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean, some 500 miles (800 km) east of the Philippines and 2,000 miles (3,200 km) south of Tokyo. Having emerged from United Nations trusteeship (administered by the United States) in 1994, it is one of the world's youngest and smallest sovereign states. In English, the name is sometimes spelled Belau in accordance with the native pronunciation. It was formerly also spelled Pelew.[3]

Palau's most populous islands are Angaur, Babeldaob, Koror, and Peleliu. The latter three lie together within the same barrier reef, while Angaur is an oceanic island several miles to the south. About two-thirds of the population live on Koror. The coral atoll of Kayangel is situated north of these islands, while the uninhabited Rock Islands (about 200) are situated to the west of the main island group. A remote group of six islands, known as the Southwest Islands, some 375 miles (600 km) from the main islands, are also part of the country and make up the states of Hatohobei and Sonsorol.

[edit] Climate
Palau enjoys a tropical climate all year round with an annual mean temperature of 82 °F (28 °C). Rainfall can occur throughout the year, averaging a total of 150 inches (3,800 mm). The average humidity over the course of the year is 82%, and although rain falls more frequently between July and October, there is still much sunshine. Typhoons are rare, as Palau is outside the main typhoon zone.

Consists primarily of tourism, subsistence agriculture, and fishing. Tourist activity focuses on scuba diving and snorkeling in the islands' rich marine environment, including its barrier reefs walls and World War II wrecks. The government is the major employer of the work force, relying heavily on financial assistance from the US. Business and tourist arrivals numbered 50,000 in the financial year 2000/2001. The population enjoys a per capita income twice that of the Philippines and much of Micronesia. Long-term prospects for the key tourist sector have been greatly bolstered by the expansion of air travel in the Pacific, the rising prosperity of leading East Asian countries, and the willingness of foreigners to finance infrastructure development.

In July 2004, Palau Micronesia Air was launched with service from Palau to Yap, Guam, Micronesia, Saipan, Australia, and the Philippines. By offering low fares it was planned to be a competitor of Continental Micronesia, however it ceased operations in December of the same year, mainly because of rising fuel prices. Palau Micronesia Air has not restarted operations since but has made a codeshare alliance with Asian Spirit, a carrier that operates flights between Palau and the Philippines (Davao, Cebu, and Manila). There are two flights weekly from Manila via Cebu to Palau and one flight weekly from Davao. Just after few months of service, Asian Spirit ceased its Philippines to Palau route.

Taxes are moderate, the income tax has 3 brackets with medium rates (9.3%, 15% and 19.6%), corporate tax is 4% and general sales tax is 7.5%. There are no property taxes.

Palau - A visit to Dolphins Pacific

Dolphins Pacific is a non-profit educational/research center in Palau, near the capital city of Koror, that keeps bottlenose dolphins (that came from Japan) in a natural bay formed by small islets of the famous “rock islands” of Palau. We visited the center and took part in 2 of their dolphin encounter programs for visitors, Close Encounter, and Dolphin Symphony.
Visitors can interact with dolphins, touch them from the dockside, or in the water, learn to make them do tricks, and if conditions are right, even go on a ride holding the dorsal fin. The trainers and guides are very knowledgeable and guide the visitors to properly interact with the dolphins. The center has been successful breeding them and when we were there, there was a baby of three months old (see if you see her jump with her mother in the film), and one female was ready to give birth at any moment. This was a great experience, and so nice to see dolphins in captivity that still can play with reef fish, and giant clams, in an actual bay in the ocean.
Thank you to the management of Dolphins Pacific for inviting us to experience the center, and film it. Filmed in January 2015.
