Packrafting in Suriname- 12 day solo paddle

In December 2019 I took a flight to the Rechter Coppename River in Central Suriname. I lucked into a wet weather system and had to protect my electronics from a daily soaking, but managed to record a little of what I stumbled upon. For the most part I enjoyed simply observing the flora and wildlife around me without a camera in hand. As it turned out, twelve days alone on a river was great pandemic training.

Video Summary:

This is a 6 day solo Amazon Rainforest journey about discovery and survival. I am on the search for the perfect canal for packrafting and for a new tour itinerary. Along the way I have to overcome various obstacles such as dangerous animals like caimans and piranhas, overgrown waterways, swamps, razor grass and deep mud. I also have to avoid Peruvian goldminers which have expanded to take up most of the Mother of God River. They are claiming plots and are now threatening any intruders with shotguns and wearing masks. For these reasons I have to choose my route carefully as my life depends on it. I'm also on the search for unspoiled wildlife and find it! I encounter various species most which are specific to lower jungle elevations such as tapirs, caimans, black skimmers, roseate spoonbills, kites, caracaras, parrots, kingfishers, taricaya turtles, squirrel monkeys, hoatzins, wattled jacanas and flycatchers.

To the tune of Man vs Wild, Alone and Naked and Afraid this is a movie I made alone without the aid of a camera crew or production. I set up the shots by myself and film as I go. There is no script and no planning beforehand. The animals show themselves when they feel like it and I try to capture it.

In addition to looking for and finding the perfect canal I find a lost oxbow lake! Oxbow lakes are the jungle's hotspots for wildlife where concentrations of animals prefer to live. Oxbow lakes are formed when a section of river becomes isolated after finding a new route around a bend of the river.

This is an educational adventure and survival video showing you that the Amazon is not as dangerous as the movies portray. Animals are scared of other animals and very scared of humans. This video shows you that a solo trip can be done and how to do it when dealing with other people, possible situations when one can get hurt, how to hammock camp and how to handle any wild animals and what the threats are.

In the style of the Discovery Channel I created this video to be more like a TV show with music and voice over techniques. There is also some scientific information about the forest animal species, river and weather characteristics. It also shows a little bit about the psychology and mindset of a person on a solo trip and mental state after a few days of being alone.

If you're looking for a true adventure through seemingly dangerous territory then this movie is for you.

The video begins in the gold mining town of Boca Colorado and continues down the Mother of God River to Pacal, CICRA (Los Amigos Biological Station) to Huitoto to J's Lake and finally ends in another gold mining town called Laberinto.

Happy exploring and be safe!

See what the Amazon is like away from tourism.

Summary:
This is a solo packrafting trip down a Creek to the Malinowski River to an unnamed creek to the Tambopata River. I am a tour operator and guide always looking for new trip itineraries for those who want to experience the Amazon and find out what it is really like. I first run into gold miners on the Malinowski river then paddle 2.5 miles up an unknown creek where I find a tapir, hoatzins, macaws, caciques, hawks, vultures, kingfishers, caiman, freshwater stingray and a birds nest made from algae. Returning to the main river I reach the Tambopata River confluence. I then demonstrate how to set up a hammock. Further down I pack up the raft and hike into the forest to a small lake. From there I continue rafting and run into some class 2 rapids followed by paddling up another creek and to Gato Falls. Then downriver I bushwhack into the jungle to set up a hammock on a small cliff. The next day I float down to an established trail which leads me to Lake Condenado which is heavily regulated by SERNANP and where my trip ends.

Kleine Saramacca ,boven Saramacca (Suriname)

I was cleaning up my hard drive and came across some old videos i never posted and thought to share it with you guys .
This was from a trip i did a while ago and it is part of the ''Fred Berg tour'' .
it is a 3 day tour consisting of a walk to Fredberg and a kayaking expidition and a small kayaking expedition though the Kleine Saramacca ,boven Saramacca in Suriname .

You can book a tour at:

Jungle tour Suriname river

The deeper into a country, the better.
In Suriname this means you end up in the jungle. So we went as far as we could.

This time, we left 'Ya' to make a 300 km ride by car, and then a 100 km 'ride' in a longboat through the jungle on the Suriname river. There, we slept in a little house to complete our tour over land.

We were impressed by the force of Nature.

Top 10 Places to Visit in Suriname

???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE SHIRTS & MERCH:

Back in July of 2019, I spent 11 amazing days traveling around the diverse South American country of Suriname. These are the top 10 places you must visit in Suriname!

1. Paramaribo
Suriname’s capital and largest city. It’s a cosmopolitan melting pot where you can find a rich, colonial past and cuisines that range from Chinese to African to Indonesian to Indian to Dutch. You can also find accommodations for every budget!

2. Tamanredjo
A small town between Paramaribo and Albina. Most of its people are Javanese, and you can find incredible Indonesian chicken, fried banana, rice, and beans, at Warung Lenny’s restaurant in town.

3. Galibi
A small village located at the meeting place of the Maroni River and the Atlantic Ocean. There, you can find lots of outstanding seafood and, between February and June, you can find nesting sea turtles!

4. Brownsweg/Ston Eiland
A town about 80 miles south of Paramaribo, near Brownsberg Nature Park and the Brokopondo Reservoir. The reservoir and surrounding forest offers jungle treks, Howler Monkey Island, and fishing for piranha, and you can find Surinamese barbecue in town!

5. Atjoni
A tiny port village that provides transportation to villages along the Upper Surinamese river. Here, you can grab some Indonesian-inspired food at the riverside restaurant and take a boat ride to Isadou Island.

6. Isadou Island
A small river island in the Upper Suriname River that is home to the Isadou Resort. You can also enjoy delicious jungle food, take treks in the forest, take a dip in the river, search for caiman at night, and visit nearby Jaw Jaw village!

7. Browns-Mountain
A 500-meter-tall mountain in Brownsberg Nature Reserve near Brokopondo Reservoir. From its summit, you can enjoy views of the reservoir and hike to two different jungle waterfalls.

8. Palumeu
A tiny village along the Tapanahony River deep in Suriname’s interior. Take a hike through the jungle to Poti Hill, explore the primary and secondary forests, go fishing in the river rapids, and visit the village!

9. Lelydorp
A mostly Javanese village along the main road leading south from Paramaribo. It’s a great place to find unique handicrafts and Indonesian-inspired street food like lumpia, satay, chicken sausage, and boiled vegetables with spicy peanut sauce!

10. Johanna-Margaretha
An area east of Paramaribo near the meeting place of the Suriname and Commewijne Rivers. Watch the pink-bellied dolphins at sunset and have an Indian dinner at the Johanna en Margaretha plantation before heading out into the swamp to look for caimans at night!

And there you have it! Those are the top 10 places you must visit in Suriname. This country is so unbelievably diverse in terms of culture and food, and is also a gorgeous country that is largely untouched and unknown to most. You will love it!

Enjoy!
