Mabuhay!

The two things I love about Philippine Airlines is their warm Filipino service and very good Philippine-inspired catering. Come fly with me on PAL's long haul Boeing 777-300ER from San Francisco to Manila.

What I liked:

The Warm Service - The in-flight service from the crew was impeccable and we were addressed by name throughout the flight. The crew were very warm, proactive, and eager to please the passengers. The meal service was also perfectly paced.

The Catering - The catering on this flight was outstanding. The crew did a good job on the presentation, but most importantly the in-flight meals were tasty and there were plenty of options to choose from.

What I didn’t like:

The Mabuhay Lounge at SFO - It’s dated, small, and when it gets crowded, the lounge is literally standing room only as there are only a handful of seats available for guests. The food options were OK with cold sandwiches, clam chowder, instant noodles, and other snacks. There’s a small self-serve bar and a decent amount of beverage offerings. PAL seriously needs to renovate this lounge soon if they want to compete with other Asian carriers.

Long Lines at Passport Control in Manila - This flight arrived at about 4:00AM in Manila, so I was very surprised to see such a long line at passport control. Apparently a few flights all arrived around the same time, hence the backup. I wish PAL would provide their premium passengers a fast track lane to bypass the long lines.

It’s Fine...

The Seats - The seats on this plane were the newer refreshed version of PAL’s old Recaro angled flat business class seats in a 2-3-2 configuration. Though the configuration is still 2-3-2 and does not give direct aisle access for all seats. The difference is that these seats recline to a full flat bed and it was very comfortable for the 14-hour flight to Manila.

The Amenities - PAL's business class amenities are decent, though they don't provide pajamas. A full size pillow and good quality duvet were waiting at our seats. A Furla amenity kit, slippers, and WIFI card were also provided to business class passengers. The lavatories were on the small side, but they were very clean and stocked with L'Occitane toiletries.

Overall impression:

Overall I’ve been very impressed by PAL’s onboard service and catering in the sky, but just like my past reviews the ground experience leaves a lot to be desired eg. The Mabuhay Lounge at SFO and the long queues in Manila upon arrival. Let’s hope PAL fixes these issues soon, so they can truly be a world class airline.

Mabuhay!

It has been a while since our last experience with Philippine Airlines longhaul Business Class. Our last journey with them on this route took place at the beginning of the pandemic, and we couldn't help but wonder if there have been any noteworthy changes since then. I'm delighted to share that the hallmark warm and attentive Filipino service in-flight remains as inviting as ever. The in-flight amenities and catering continue to be up to par with our previous flights. However, it's worth noting that PAL's lounge at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) continues to be disappointing.

What I liked:

The Warm Service:
The in-flight service provided by the crew left a lasting impression. Their professionalism was evident in their proactive and attentive approach, addressing us by name throughout the journey. The crew's warmth and commitment to passenger satisfaction were commendable. Notably, the meal service was thoughtfully paced, enhancing the overall in-flight experience.

The Catering:
The catering on this flight surpassed expectations. The crew demonstrated excellence in both presentation and substance. The diverse array of well-prepared meals reflected a commitment to accommodating varied tastes. Beyond the aesthetic appeal, the flavors were exceptional, elevating the dining experience and contributing significantly to the overall satisfaction of our journey.

What I didn’t like:

The Golden Gate Lounge at SFO:
The Mabuhay Lounge, now rebranded as the Golden Gate Lounge, retains its familiar ambiance, which unfortunately includes its somewhat dated and confined layout. Seating remains limited, and our good fortune allowed us to secure a spot before the lounge reached its capacity. The food offerings, though acceptable, are not particularly expansive, featuring standard options like fruits, vegetables, charcuterie, cold sandwiches, pasta bowls, noodle soup, and assorted snacks. A modest self-serve bar complements a decent selection of beverages. Urgent renovations are advisable, especially in light of United's Polaris Lounge at SFO, which raises the competitive bar.

The Seats:
Turning to the in-flight experience, the seats on this plane were the refreshed version of PAL's older Recaro angled flat business class seats on the Boeing 777-300ER, arranged in a 2-3-2 configuration. While the seats do recline to a fully flat position, the layout does not allow direct aisle access for all passengers. Despite this limitation, the seats provided a pretty comfortable 14-hour flight to Manila. PAL should definitely consider upgrading their long-haul business class seats, especially since to United offers the more modern and superior Polaris seats on the same route.

It’s OK, I guess…

The In-flight Amenities:
In terms of amenities, PAL's business class offerings strike a balance of comfort and function. Notably absent are pajamas and mattress pad, but they do provide a full-size pillow and a high-quality duvet in business class. Premium passengers are also treated to a Bric's soft pouch amenity kit, equipped with Payot toiletries, noise-canceling headphones, slippers, and a complimentary WIFI card. Despite the lavatories being on the smaller side, the crew kept them very clean throughout the flight.

Bottom Line:

In summary, our experience with Philippine Airlines' longhaul Business Class showcased the airline's enduring strengths, including warm and attentive in-flight service and excellent catering. The Golden Gate Lounge at SFO, however, remains in need of a revamp to match the competition. The business class seats, while comfortable, lack direct aisle access for all passengers, which PAL needs to improve. The amenities are decent, with a notable absence of pajamas, but thoughtful touches like a well-equipped amenity kit and clean lavatories enhance the overall journey. While there are areas that could benefit from enhancements, PAL's positive aspects continue to make it a competitive choice for travelers.

Philippine Airlines 777-300ER | Business Class Review 2021 | Los Angeles LAX to Manila MNL

Welcome to my World.

In this episode, we take PAL's Business Class from LAX to MNL on a transpacific flight. Let's take a look at my COVID-era flight experience and see if Philippine Airlines' direct flight is worth the time and money compared to its competitors that have more affordable and more premium business class, but with a caveat, a stopover.

PHILIPPINE AIRLINES BUSINESS CLASS BOEING 777-300ER | MANILA TO SAN FRANCISCO

Overall impression: A review of Philippine Airlines (PAL) flight PR104 MNL-SFO on their Boeing 777-300ER (reg. RP-C7776). Not the best seat configuration in business class in terms of comfort as the seats were 2-3-2, but pretty comfortable compared to the ancient Airbus A340-300 seats we had on the outbound. In-flight amenities included a full size pillow, proper duvet, L’Occitane amenity kit and PAL branded slippers. The business class lavatories were pretty basic, but were kept clean throughout the flight. They offered L’Occitane handwash, lotion, mouthwash, and cologne. Where PAL really shines is the service and food. Service was attentive and warm. We were addressed by name, not just once but throughout the flight. The food was excellent as well. Each meal had selections that catered to the Filipino, Asian, and Western tastes. No trays were used during the meal service and all courses were directly placed on the linen. This airline is really growing on me. They still have a long way to go to catch up with the likes of Cathay Pacific or Singapore Airlines, but I see the potential. Way to go PAL! Thanks for the great flight!

Philippine Airlines Business Class | B777-300ER | Manila (MNL) to Los Angeles (LAX)

This is our Business Class flight experience aboard Philippine Airlines B777-300ER, from Manila (Philippines) to Los Angeles (USA) on November 22, 2023.

SURPRISING Business Class Flight on Philippine Airlines

This flight was one of the few flights that I went into completely blind. I knew based on my seat choice that it was a 2-3-2 cabin but othere than that I really didnt know waht to expect. Philippine airlines blew my mind. I love every moment on board. The food was delicious, the crew were friendly and the seat comfortable. I believe that PAL is an airline that everyone should fly if they need or want to travel to Southeast Asia.

Overall Impression:

What is Philippine Airlines Business Class like?

Mabuhay!
We've been flying PAL a lot lately and as much as I dislike MNL's NAIA Terminal 2 and the Mabuhay Lounge, I really like PAL's warm and friendly onboard service and delicious Filipino in-flight catering. As I've mentioned in my previous PAL videos, PAL is trying to catch-up with their other Asian competitors in the market and things are getting better, albeit very slowly. Come fly with me and see my experience with PAL. Please let me know what you think of the video in the comments.

What I liked:

The warm PAL service: Pre-departure beverages were offered along with a hot towel. After takeoff, we had a full meal service (although a bit abbreviated due to the short flight duration). The catering was very good and service by the crew was excellent and very warm, which is one of the things I love about PAL.

It was OK:

PAL's Mabuhay Lounge - I have a love/hate relationship with Mabuhay Lounge in Manila. On one hand, the arroz caldo they serve in the lounge is by far the best I've had anywhere. Sadly this is where the good things stop. The lounge gets very crowded especially during peak hours, their food and beverage offering could use some work, and the lounge decor is just sad and drab. The lounge is very much due for a huge makeover.

The seats - These old school Recaro angled flat seats are really showing their age, but they are fine for the short hop to Bankok.I know most business class passengers value privacy and there's very little privacy in these seats. However if you are traveling with a companion or family, these seats are ideal since you can still carry out a conversation with them during the flight unlike in other configurations.

What I didn't like:

Departing from MNL (NAIA) Terminal 2. The terminal building is literally bursting at the seams with the amount of traffic they get.

PHILIPPINE AIRLINES BUSINESS CLASS BOEING 777-300ER SFO-MNL

Overall impression:

Mabuhay!

The two things I love about Philippine Airlines is their warm Filipino service and very good Philippine-inspired catering. Come fly with me on PAL's long haul Boeing 777-300ER from San Francisco to Manila.

What I didn’t like:

Check-in was a bit disorganized and the agents were overwhelmed with the amount of
passengers checking in for the 2 PAL widebody flights to Manila. Business class had a dedicated queue, but we still had to wait 10-15 minutes. The Mabuhay Lounge at SFO. It’s old,
small, and when it gets crowded, the lounge is literally standing room only as there are only a handful of seats available for guests. The food options are OK with cold sandwiches, BBQ chicken wings, instant noodles, and other snacks. There’s a limited self-serve bar, and a good selection of softdrinks. PAL seriously needs to renovate this lounge soon if they want to compete with other Asian carriers. (By the way, the Cathay Pacific Lounge just down the hall is heavenly!) The boarding area was crowded but thankfully the boarding process was orderly.

It’s fine...

The seats were PAL’s Recaro angled flat business class seats in a 2-3-2 configuration. We were seated in seats 4A and 4C. They aren’t the most comfortable business class seats, but I was still able to sleep about 6 hours out of the almost 13 hour flight to Manila... and better yet, NO SLIDING!

Onboard service was impeccable and we were addressed by name throughout the flight. The catering was very good and presented well by the crew, as expected.

Overall I’ve been very impressed by PAL’s onboard service in the sky, but just like my past reviews the ground experience leaves a lot to be desired. Let’s hope PAL fixes these issues soon, so they can truly be a world class airline.

PS: Checkout our missed approach and go around during landing in Manila.

PHILIPPINE AIRLINES BUSINESS CLASS BOEING 777-300ER MNL-SFO

Blogpost:

Overall impression:

I get a lot of questions on what is Philippine Airlines Business Class like? We finally found a good PAL business class fare and went for it. We were looking forward to try PAL's updated Business Class seats on their Boeing 777-300ER, and we were not disappointed. The seats are very comfortable and the configuration allowed my companion and I to talk during the flight. The Mabuhay lounge was a nice respite from the zoo that is NAIA Terminal 2. Service from the crew was very good and consistent with our other flights on PAL. The catering was excellent, especially if you like Filipino food. Another great flight on PAL!

What I didn’t like:

The dreaded NAIA Terminal 2. Much like the other terminals at MNL, NAIA T2 requires passengers to go through multiple security checks. When you first approach the terminal entrance, you need to show the security guard your printed itinerary/eticket. Then, once at the entrance of the terminal, they xray your luggage and you go through a metal detector. All US-bound checked baggage are then opened by security during check-in, after which all passengers are asked the usual security questions. That's not the end of it, there's another security checkpoint after immigration, and then another at the gate (for all US-bound flights). Anything for security, I guess...The terminal itself is actually pretty airy with glass windows and high ceilings, but the problem is the terminal building is too small to handle the amount of passengers. There's literally nowhere to sit once you're airside, especially during the evenings when most North America-bound PAL flights depart. There are very limited food choices once you're airside and not many (if any) stores for shopping.

It’s fine...

Philippine Airlines'(PAL) new full flat Business Class seats on their Boeing 777-300ER was a nice improvement over their older Recaro angled flat seats. PAL deployed the Zodiac Aura Enhanced seats, similar to the seats that Turkish Airlines uses on their Boeing 777-300ER aircrafts. The seat is well padded and comfortable when sitting and lounging, but most importantly it turns into a full flat bed when it's time to sleep. Although the 2-3-2 seat configuration is not ideal for the typical business traveler, the cabin felt open and less claustrophobic than other configs we've tried. Business class passengers are provided with a L'Occitane amenity kit, slippers, as well as a full size pillow and thick duvet (similar to the one Qatar Airways uses) to make the 12 hour journey across the Pacific more comfortable.

Onboard service was very good. The crew on this flight were a little bit more reserved than other PAL flights we took, but provided us with great service nonetheless. PAL doesn't use trays during meal service, so our plates were placed directly on the white linen. Refills were proactively offered and we were addressed by name throughout the flight.

In my opinion, PAL's onboard catering is where they shine. They offer a selection of Filipino, Asian, and Western dishes. Being Filipino, it was a nice treat to be able to eat my favorite Filipino dishes onboard. The dishes were all presented nicely and were delicious! I really enjoyed the food offering on this flight.

PAL's Mabuhay Lounge at Manila's Terminal 2 is a relatively small lounge compared to other Airline lounges in their hub. Though there's plenty of seating available, the lounge can get crowded during peak hours. The food offering is good and they offer made to order noodle soups. Don't miss the chicken arroz caldo!
