The ancient Qissah (Kissa) Khwani Bazar (“Street of Storytellers”) is the meeting place for foreign merchants who deal in dried fruits, woolen products, rugs, carpets, pustins (sheepskin coats), karakul (lambskin) caps, and Chitrali cloaks.

Situated in the broad Valley of Peshawar near the eastern end of the historic Khyber Pass, close to the border with Afghanistan, Peshawar's recorded history dates back to at least 539 BCE, making it the oldest city in Pakistan and one of the oldest cities in South Asia. As the center of the ancient Gandhara region, Peshawar served as the capital of the Kushan Empire; and was home to the Kanishka stupa.[10 Peshawar was then sacked by the White Huns, before the arrival of Muslim empires. The city was an important trading centre during the Mughal era before serving as the winter capital of the Afghan Durrani Empire from 1757 until the city was captured by the Sikh Empire in 1818, who were then followed by the British in 1849.

Most of my trip to Pakistan was spent in the mountains, but I knew my trip would not be complete without seeing a few Pakistani cities and meeting the people and culture. Peshawar was the perfect place to experience both. Situated in the northwest of the country, on the edge of the Khyber pass to Afghanistan, lies the historic Silk Road city. Not many tourists make it here lending itself to a very authentic look into the lives of the Pakistani people. The hospitality was overwhelming as we shared many meals with complete strangers and couldn’t walk down the street without shaking a few hands. We had a few days to wander these ancient streets, and here’s how it went….

The city was an important trading centre during the Mughal era, before becoming part of the Pashtun Durrani Empire in 1747, and serving as their winter capital from 1776 until the capture of the city by the Sikh Empire in March 1823, who were followed by the British Indian Empire in 1846.
