Opatija, Croatia is my favorite summer getaway - Travel Guide

Opatija is one of our favorite destinations in Croatia and very different from the most visited tourist destinations, Split and Dubrovnik.
Hey there, everyone! I'm Diana Roberts, and I recently had the opportunity to travel to Opatija, Croatia.

Opatija is a beautiful seaside resort town located on the Adriatic Sea. The scenery here is breathtaking, with beautiful and unique architecture and breathtaking sea views.

The city is full of interesting activities and attractions. From the charming cobblestoned streets to the luxurious beachfront villas, there is something for everyone here.

I started my trip by exploring the city center. I visited some of the many churches and monuments and had a chance to see the old town. The architecture here is truly remarkable, and it's easy to see why this city has been a popular destination for centuries.

Next, I explored the nearby beaches. The main beach in Opatija is Slatina Beach, known for its white sand and crystal-clear water. I also visited the small beach of Zlatnik, known for its beautiful sunsets.

Today we’re in Opatija! A beautiful, elegant coastal town in Croatia. We had a stunning, clear day to explore, and saw so much of the city!

Opatija is located in Kvarner Bay, which is located at the foot of Mount Ucka. It’s about 15km from the bigger port city of Rijeka.

The Maiden of the Seagull

This statue has become a symbol of Opatija. Anyone that comes here definitely has a picture with the Maiden of the Seagull! It was built in 1956 by the famous Croatian sculptor, Zvonko Car. There was actually a fish in the seagull’s mouth when the statue was first made, but it mysteriously disappeared, and they don’t know exactly how. It’s believed that it was either stolen, or washed away by the sea. I think it was probably stolen, what about you?

The Lungomare

This is the beautiful and famous promenade that lines the seafront in Opatija. It actually goes on for about 12km, and connects two other villages on either side of Opatija. It’s a stunning place for a walk, a stroll, and they even have great little look out points that you can just sit at and relax before continuing on your way.

Hotel Kvarner

This is the oldest hotel on the East side of the Adriatic Sea. It was actually built in 1844 and was originally intended as a sanatorium to treat lung diseases. People with money would come and stay in this gorgeous hotel while they treated their illnesses. Opatija as a city wanted to be known as a health tourism destination, so when this hotel went up, many other luxury hotels and guest houses started to be built. Hotel Kvarner was really what sparked tourism in Opatija, which then sparked tourism throughout the rest of Croatia.

Villa Angiolina

This gorgeous villa used to be a summer residence way back in the day, but now it’s turned into Croatia’s tourism museum. It usually has a beautiful garden park right in front of it that is filled with color, and various kinds of flowers, but now it’s all been trimmed back for the winter. The greenery is still lovely to admire, though! You can just picture what it might look like with colourful flowers between all of the green edges.

St. James’s Church

This church sits in the center of Opatija, and it’s very important to the city’s history. It was built in the Benedictine Abbey around 1420, by a colony of Benedictine refugees. Opatija even got its name from the Abbey, because abbey in Croatian is actually the word “Opatija” so that’s how the city got it’s name. It’s very connected with the church and a very central part of Opatija.

St. James’s Park

This park sits right in front of St. James’s Church, and it’s a peaceful place to walk through, sit down and enjoy the immaculate landscapes throughout. The park is well known for the lovely fountain that sits in the middle. There are figures of Selene and Helios, which are the goddess of the moon and the god of the sun.

Hotel Milenij

This hotel has the best terrace in the city, we think! Great views of the sea, beautifully designed and decorated, and they have delicious cakes and coffee! Perfect for a little stop while you’re exploring Opatija!

The Chocolate Museum in Hotel Continental

Definitely the most delicious museum we’ve ever visited! There are so many different types of chocolate, along with breathtaking sculptures made of 100% chocolate. In fact, the horse statue shown in the video started from a block of 400kg of chocolate that was sculpted down into the statue as it stands now.

We really had a lovely day in Opatija. It really has so much to offer, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! We come here once in a while when we need a break from Zagreb and a dose of the sea, because it’s just a quick 2hr drive.

IČIĆI | Opatija Riviera | Croatia | Pointers Travel DMC

Ičići - a hidden gem in Kvarner Gulf
Ičići is a small tourist village with around 800 inhabitants located in Kvarner Gulf. The village is 5 kilometers away from Opatija and 15 kilometers from Rijeka. Inhabitants of Ičići mainly work in the tourism industry. Although small, Ičići boasts a rich repertoire of activities for tourists; from sports and clubbing to day trips and beautiful sea.

Ičići through history
The sea has always been the main resource for the people of Ičići, ever since the 9th century BC when the Liburnians (an Illyrian tribe) used to build their fast ships along these coasts and then sailed to North Africa and Asia Minor. It is, therefore, no wonder that this ancient connection with the sea has been preserved until the present day.

What makes it worth visiting
Today, Ičići is most famous for its attractive beach and one of the best marinas in the Adriatic. For more than a decade, Ičići beach has been awarded the Blue Flag, an international symbol of high-quality service and cleanliness, and has been listed as one of the five best-maintained beaches in Croatia. From Ičići, visitors have a clear view of two of the largest Croatian islands, Krk and Cres, both of which can be visited by ferry. Ičići lies in the foothill of Učka mountain with a summit at 1401 meters above sea level. Učka mountain and its surroundings were declared a nature park due to their exceptional beauty and uniqueness.

Still, one of the main reasons why people come to Ičići is its beautiful beach that is located at the center of the village and has a concrete and sandy part. The beach is a target of large investments every year and due to that is continually awarded the Blue Flag. Despite all of this, entrance to the beach is free.

Lungomare, a very famous promenade built by Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I, passes through Ičići. This magnificent promenade is 12 kilometers long and spans from Volosko all the way to Lovran, with Ičići being almost right in between the two. At night it is dimly lit which offers excellent surroundings for romantic strolls with that special person. Ičići is very well connected with surrounding towns with many cities and intercity buses.

If you are looking for an ideal vacation, be it on your yacht or on a beach, Ičići is one of those top destinations you simply must visit while in Croatia.

Opatija, Croatia - Walking Tour

Opatija is a town and a municipality in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County in western Croatia. The traditional seaside resort on the Kvarner Gulf is known for its Mediterranean climate and its historic buildings reminiscent of the Austrian Riviera.
Opatija is located 18 km northwest of the regional capital Rijeka, about 90 km from Trieste by rail and 82 km rom Pula by road. The city is geographically on the Istrian peninsula, though not in Istria County. The municipality had 10,661 inhabitants in total, of which 5,715 lived in the urban settlement.

The town is a popular summer and winter resort, with average high temperatures of 10 °C in winter, and 32 °C in summer. Opatija is surrounded by beautiful woods of bay laurel. The whole sea-coast to the north and south of Opatija is rocky and picturesque, and contains several smaller winter resorts.
Opatija is best known nowadays as the venue for a 1912 chess tournament devoted to the King’s Gambit. The Austrian emperor Franz Joseph I used to spend several months there during the winter. He met there with the German emperor Wilhelm II on 29 March 1894; other crowned heads seeking relaxation included Empress Elisabeth of Austria and the German empress Augusta Victoria, King Carol I of Romania and his consort Elisabeth, King George I of Greece, King Albert of Saxony, Grand Duke William IV of Luxembourg, and Prince Nikola I Petrović-Njegoš. Many of the late 19th-century luxury hotels and villas have survived to present times.
Opatija was included in the territory of the Liburni, a pre-Roman Illyrian tribe. In Roman times, the area was home to several patrician villas connected to the nearby town of Castrum Laureana, the modern Lovran.
The town's modern history began in 1844, when Iginio Scarpa, a wealthy merchant from Rijeka, had the Villa Angiolina manor built in an extended park, where he received notable guests such as Ban Josip Jelačić. In 1873 the Austrian Southern Railway company from Vienna opened the branch line from Pivka to Rijeka via nearby Matulji and thus opened the path for the development of tourism in Opatija and neighbouring Lovran. In 1882, the railway company purchased the Villa Angiolina, where it accommodated the crown princely couple Rudolf and Stéphanie.

Lovran / Croatia / near Opatija / 4k | Pointers Travel DMC

Hi there. take a look at this video of Lovran and maybe this will help you to decide where to go this summer ;)

Lovran is a town in Istria, Croatia, situated on the western coast of the Kvarner Bay. Its name derives from Laurel (Laurus nobilis), as shown in the coat of arms. Lovran is one of the oldest coastal settlements on the eastern shore of Istria. By the early Middle Ages, it was an important urban and shipbuilding center of northern Adriatic. Lovran lost its significance following the sudden development of port towns in the vicinity (Trieste, Pula, and Rijeka) which became the new and dominant urban centers in the region.
However, by the mid 19th century, the area gains prominence as it becomes a fashionable resort for the Austro-Hungarian nobility. Lovran still fosters its long tradition of tourism which is evidenced by its economy; the backbone of which is still tourism.

Monuments and landmarks of Lovran
The region is rich with cultural-historical heritage. From the parish church with medieval frescoes and Glagolitic inscriptions, the 14th-century tower of St George's Square within the old urban core, to the rural ambiances and architectural edifices – namely turn-of-the-century villas with surrounding parks provide interesting sights for everyone visiting Lovran in Croatia.

Active vacation
The advantage of Lovran is its geographic position which allows for a great number of various activities and day trips. You can visit some of the most beautiful national parks like Plitvice Lakes, Brijuni Islands, and Risnjak) and the coast of Istria and its lovely towns. In Lovran, you can play tennis, go mountain climbing, rent a bike and explore nature or even go scuba diving.

Lovran offers all the prerequisites for an ideal vacation, the only thing you need is to come and make it happen!
