If you are travelling from Mettupalayam to Ooty, go for the Ooty Mountain Railway, rather than any other mode of transport. More commonly known as the Ooty Toy train, the experience you get here is really out of the world.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is the only mountain railway that operates on a daily basis in South India. The train runs one to and fro journey every day and the frequency increases during peak summer, to accommodate the heavy inflow of tourists. The train runs from Mettupalayam to Ooty via Coonoor.

What's a trip without a ride in one of the slowest,oldest steam engines of India when you are headed to the queen of hills (AKA Ooty/ udhagamandalam).
This toy train that starts from mettupalayam works on an amazing rack and pinion mechanism with the engine at the end pushing the entire train upwards on the hills.
There is a museum in mettupalayam explaining all the details of how the train works.
We suggest you have your breakfast in mettupalayam before you start the journey since the toy train takes you slow for almost four hours letting you soak in the mesmerizing views of the Nature.
The train stops in a couple of stations giving you a break of 15 minutes to take pictures and Film videos.
This has three categories, the first class, second sitting and unreserved.
You can book your tickets online using IRCTC website giving your destination as udhagamandalam. You also have an option of booking tickets offline which will require you to reach the respective station a little earlier or you can reach coonoor and find many trains and take a ride in one of them.

Join us on a breathtaking train journey from Mettupalayam to Udhagamandalam (Ooty) on the iconic Nilgiri Mountain Railway. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is known as the 'Ooty Toy Train' and is one of the steepest tracks in Asia, with a maximum gradient of 8.33%. Our journey took us through the stunning Nilgiri Mountains, passing through 16 tunnels, 250 bridges, and 108 curves. We witnessed a beautiful sunrise during our downhill taxi ride from Ooty to Mettupalayam, which was only the beginning of our incredible journey.
To travel on the Ooty Toy Train, it is highly recommended to take the entire journey from Mettupalayam to Udhagamandalam or vice versa, and we recommend booking your tickets in advance. The train runs daily from Mettupalayam to Ooty via Coonoor in the morning and back in the afternoon. The uphill journey takes around 4 and a half hours, while the downhill journey takes 3 and a half hours.

How to travel in Ooty Toy Train ?
To have one of the best experience and to enjoy the breathtaking scenic beauty of Nilgirs (as you see in the video), it is highly recommended to take the travel or take the entire journey i.e. from Mettupalayam to Udhagamandalam (Ooty) or vice versa.
Since we were already in Ooty and we wanted to get the experience of morning train journey from Mettupalam to Ooty. We hired a cab in the morning and our journey start at around 4:45 AM from our hotel.
A 50 KM taxi ride from Ooty town to Mettupalayam railway station took us around one and half hours approximately. This taxi ride was a downhill journey from Ooty which is situated 2,240 M above sea level to Mettupalayam which is only 320 M above sea level. The Sun was rising in the far east, while we watched it rise from horizon through the clouds during our downhill journey towards Mettupalayam. This is one of the best Sunrise i have watched during my trip.

Mettupalayam to Udhagamandalam (Ooty) :
Departure: 7:10 AM
Arrival: 12 PM
Udhagamandalam to Mettupalam:
Departure: 2 PM
Arrival: 5:35 PM
You may Book the train tickets via offical Indian Railway booking websites or apps. Since we planned this trip in the last minute, we had to take Tatkal ticket via IRCTC website. I recommend to book the train tickets in advance.
About Toy Train:
Nilgiri Mountain Railway / also famously known as Ooty Toy train is declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2005. The track is also considered to be the steepest track in Asia with a maximum gradient of 8.33%
Nilgiri Mountain Railway is the only railway that runs through the south Indian mountains on a daily basis. The train runs daily from Mettupalayam to Ooty (Udhagamandalam) via Coonoor in the morning and back from Ooty to Mettupalam in the afternoon. During the Summer season, the frequency increses to meet the inflow of tourist and also accommodate the normal passengers.
The total distance of the track is 46 Kms running through the Nilgiri Mountains. The uphill journey takes around 4 and half hours), and the downhill journey takes 3 and half hours.
From Mettupalam to Coonoor, the train is pushed by Steam engine and then at Coonoor station the engine is then changed to Diesel Engine with addition of multiple compartments.
Between Mettupalayam and Coonoor, the line uses the Abt rack and pinion system to climb the steep gradient. The Nilgiri mountain railway is the only rack railway in India.
The train runs at an average speed of 10 Km/h crossing 45.8 kilometres (28 mi), 108 curves, 16 tunnels and 250 bridges, including few of the stations and maintenance stops. Kallar, which is the first station from Mettupalayam followed by Adderly, Hillgrove, Runneymede, Coonoor, Wellington, Aravakadu, Lovedale and finally to Udhagamandalam. During each stop the engineers refill the water tanks in the engine followed by regular maintenance checks for the engine.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) is a 1,000 mm (3 ft 3+3⁄8 in) metre gauge railway in Nilgiris district, Tamil Nadu, India, built by the British in 1908.[1] The railway is operated by the Southern Railway[2] and is the only rack railway in India.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is the only mountain railway that operates on a daily basis in South India. The train runs one to and fro journey every day and the frequency increases during peak summer, to accommodate the heavy inflow of tourists. The train runs from Mettupalayam to Ooty via Coonoor.The railway relies on its fleet of steam locomotives.[3] NMR switched to diesel locomotives on the section between Coonoor and Udhagamandalam. Local people and visitors led a campaign to return to steam locomotives in this section.[3]
In July 2005, UNESCO added the Nilgiri Mountain Railway as an extension to the World Heritage Site of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. The site then became known as Mountain Railways of India.

Nilgiri Mountain Railway
METTUPALAIYAM - OOTY :
It was in 1854, that the first plans were made to build a mountain Railway from Mettupalaiyam to the Nilgiri Hills. But it took the decision-makers 45 years to cut through the bureaucratic red tape and complete the construction and installation of the line.
The line was completed and opened for traffic in June 1899. It was operated first by the Madras Railway under an agreement with the Government.
The Madras Railway Company continued to manage this railway line on behalf of the government for a long time until the South Indian Railway company purchased it. The line was extended to Ootacamund from Coonoor some time in 1908 on the same gauge over a distance of 11 and 3/4 miles at a cost of Rs. 24,40,000.
The steepest gradient on this line is 1 in 23 and there is no rack on it as provided between Coonoor and Mettupalaiyam.
The Railway line from Mettupalaiyam to Ooty is 45.88 km. long and lies partly in Coimbatore District and partly in Nilgiri District of Tamilnadu, on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats. Mettupalaiyam is at the foothills with an elevation of about 330 meters and Udagamandalam (Ooty) on the plateau with an elevation of 2200 metres. The average gradient of this line is about 1 in 24.5.
The gauge is laid to Meter gauge (1000 mm). The sharpest curve on the section is 17.5 degrees.
The track is made of 50 lb rails. There are 250 bridges on the section, out of which 32 are major ones and 15 are road over bridges.
There are 16 tunnels between Kallar and Ooty all of which are in excellent condition.
The section from Mettupalaiyam to Udagamandalam is provided with stone ballast and the cushion varies from 75 mm to 150 mm.
The Maximum permissible speed on Mettupalaiyam-Kallar and Coonoor-Udagamandalam Non-Rack system is 30 while between Kallar and Coonoor RACK section the maximum permissible speed is 13 kmph. The region covered by the Nilgiri Mountain Railway gets rainfall during the south-west and north-east monsoons. The average rainfall is of the order of 1250 mm at Udagamandalam, 1400 mm at Coonoor and 500 mm at Mettupalaiyam. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway keeps chugging despite the downpour.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) is a 1,000 mm (3 ft 3+3⁄8 in) metre gauge railway in Tamil Nadu, India, built by the British in 1908. The railway is operated by the Southern Railway and is the only rack railway in India.
The railway relies on its fleet of steam locomotives. NMR switched to diesel locomotives on the section between Coonoor and Udhagamandalam. Local people and visitors led a campaign to return to steam locomotives in this section.
In July 2005, UNESCO added the Nilgiri Mountain Railway as an extension to the World Heritage Site of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. The site then became known as Mountain Railways of India.

Toy Train - Ooty to Coonoor toy train | Travel Vlog | Part - 8
One thing that promises to be a highlight of your visit to Ooty is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway experience. If you are travelling from Mettupalayam to Ooty, go for the Ooty Mountain Railway, rather than any other mode of transport. More commonly known as the Ooty Toy train, the experience you get here is really out of the world.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is the only mountain railway that operates on a daily basis in South India. The train runs one to and fro journey every day and the frequency increases during peak summer, to accommodate the heavy inflow of tourists. The train runs from Mettupalayam to Ooty via Coonoor.
The track is a total of 46 kilometers and runs completely through the picturesque Nilgiri Mountains and the journey is worth the time spent in the train. You get both first class and second class tickets and if you are a person who loves some quiet and calm, go for the first class tickets and enjoy the mountains and the beautiful scenery that whisks past you in the train.
Initially the mountain train was pulled by a steam locomotive, but now this is sometimes replaced by a diesel one to give the train more pull. The carriages have always remained the same blue and cream color and it is easily recognized from many South Indian movies.
The Nilgiri train timetable currently says that the train leaves at 07:10 hours and reaches Ooty by 12:00 hours, and the return journey from Ooty starts at about 14:00 hrs and reaches Mettupalayam by about 17:35 hrs. Do confirm this before you leave.
