What's a trip without a ride in one of the slowest,oldest steam engines of India when you are headed to the queen of hills (AKA Ooty/ udhagamandalam).
This toy train that starts from mettupalayam works on an amazing rack and pinion mechanism with the engine at the end pushing the entire train upwards on the hills.
There is a museum in mettupalayam explaining all the details of how the train works.
We suggest you have your breakfast in mettupalayam before you start the journey since the toy train takes you slow for almost four hours letting you soak in the mesmerizing views of the Nature.
The train stops in a couple of stations giving you a break of 15 minutes to take pictures and Film videos.
This has three categories, the first class, second sitting and unreserved.
You can book your tickets online using IRCTC website giving your destination as udhagamandalam. You also have an option of booking tickets offline which will require you to reach the respective station a little earlier or you can reach coonoor and find many trains and take a ride in one of them.

About Ooty Nilgiri Mountain Railways: . If you are travelling from Mettupalayam to Ooty, go for the Ooty Mountain Railway, rather than any other mode of transport. More commonly known as the Ooty Toy train, the experience you get here is really out of the world.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is the only mountain railway that operates on a daily basis in South India. The train runs one to and fro journey every day and the frequency increases during peak summer, to accommodate the heavy inflow of tourists. The train runs from Mettupalayam to Ooty via Coonoor.

The track is a total of 46 kilometers and runs completely through the picturesque Nilgiri Mountains and the journey is worth the time spent in the train. You get both first class and second class tickets and if you are a person who loves some quiet and calm, go for the first class tickets and enjoy the mountains and the beautiful scenery that whisks past you in the train.

Ooty is a hill station in Tamil nadu, a southern state of India. The main attraction of Ooty is toy train, (Nilgiri mountain railway line), Ooty lake and shooting points. Although, monsoon is off season here but, tourists come here throughout the year to enjoy it's natural beauty.
This popular tourist place was habituated long ago by the the then british ruler's. The average height of Ooty is nearly 7000 ft above sea level and for this reason the weather remains comfortable throughout the year. Although, at winter, temperature drops to subzero at late night, but due to the location, no snowfall happens. Ooty in monsoon is also pleasant. The main attraction, Ooty lake is a man-made lake and it was made for fishing. Tamilnadu Tourism Ooty Boat House is by the bank of Ooty Lake.
How to go Kolkata to ooty:
Ooty is connected with Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, and many other prime cities of India via it's nearest railhead Coimbatore. This tour place is also easily accessible from Bengaluru (Bangalore) and Mysuru (Mysore) by road via Mysore-Ooty highway in 6 hrs and 3 hrs respectively. Coimbatore has one international airport which connects it through flight from Kolkata, Delhi and other prime indian cities. From Coimbatore, it takes 2 hrs to reach Ooty.
One of the main tourist attraction of Ooty is toy train, which now runs from Mettupalayam station through Nilgiri Mountain Railway Line and take 5 hrs to reach Ooty. Tourists from all over the world come here to enjoy the journey through the Ooty hills. This narrow gauge railway line has been included into UNESCO World heritage. The Ooty tour never completes without enjoying Ooty toy train ride. Toy train from Ooty to Coonoor, one way journey is sufficient to enjoy the natural beauty of Nilgiri Hills. This journey takes nearly 1 and half hour to reach Coonoor. The journey through the hills, tunnels and pine forests will remain in memory forever. Ooty toy train advance booking can be done online or from ooty railway station in person. As tickets for toy train in ooty has high demand, prior online booking is advisable.
This south indian hill station is very popular among tourists for its natural beauty and pleasant weather. The town has one famous government Rose garden, which is the home for nearly 4000 types of roses. The zoo and botanical garden is also very popular. Other Ooty visiting places are, pine forest, pykara lake and pykara falls, shooting points, museum, thread garden etc. In Coonoor, the tea gardens and the Sim's park is famous tourist spot around Ooty.
Where to stay in Ooty:
The town has many hotels, hostels, zostels of different class and budget. Tamilnadu tourism development corporation (TTDC) has two hotels here, unit 1 and 2. The government youth hostel is situated along with unit 2. The arrangements in all the government accommodation is very good and a budget ooty trip is possible with these.

Ooty, Officially Known As Udhagamandalam, Is A Town And A Municipality In The Nilgiris District Of The Indian State Of Tamil Nadu. It Is Located 86 Km North West Of Coimbatore, 100 Km North West Of Tiruppur And 128 Km South Of Mysore And Is The Headquarters Of The Nilgiris District. I had a train from Kacheguda Railway station to Mysore railway station, from Mysore railway station to Mysore bus stand to catch Ooty bus. Then travelled from Mysore to Ooty bus journey, passing through Karnataka to Tamilnadu crossing Bandipur Tiger reserve and Mudumulai Tiger Reserve and reached Ooty Bus stand covering 5 hours journey.

After 2 days we came from Ooty to Mysore by bus journey via Tiger reserve in Mysore we booked a hotel Aashraya near Railway station and hired 2 wheeler bike rent in Mysore through Onn bikes near Jaganmohan palace
