Part 1 - Muscat

Today we are back in the capital city Muscat. Since we haven’t had the chance to try traditional Omani cuisine, we headed to a the restaurant Bait Al Luban which was recommended to us by a couple we met as well as had great reviews on TripAdvisor.

The interior decor of the place felt like we were taken back in time to an Arabian rest house. There were treasure chests, lamps, tables on the floor and Frankincense smoke that filled the air. I tried coffee that tasted more like medicine tea, a smoothie made with nutmeg, goat meat that had been roasted in the ground for hours, and Lawrence had some cheese sticks that resembled Mozzarella sticks back home...and then had a feast at McDonalds after =)

BAIT AL ZUBAIR MUSEUM IN MUSCAT | #albaghmuseum

#wanderexplore #omanvlog #muscatvlog

Bait Al Bagh is the main museum building that was originally founded as a family home in 1914 by Sheikh Al Zubair bin Ali, who served three former Sultans as a minister and advisor. It was a gathering place for the elite, while today it is rebuilt to suit its function as a museum, though still reflecting traditional elements of Oman’s architectural heritage and the original house. Exhibits include information regarding the Al Busaidi dynasty; with portraits of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said and various other Sultans. There are also six galleries on the ground floor that exhibit excellent examples of khanjar (Omani dagger), male and female attire, traditional swords and firearms, antique jewellery and household articles, musical instruments & a wedding display. On the first floor the stamp collection of Mohammed Al Jamali is exhibited along with a historic collection of coins and a unique collection of manuscripts dating from the 16th century.

Oman/History of Muscat (Bait Al Branda museum) Part 41

Welcome to my travelchannel.
On my channel you can find more than 1000 films of almost 80 countries. See the playlist on my youtube channel.Enjoy!
Bait Al Baranda Museum:
Located in the heart of the tourist district on the seafront in Mutrah, Bait Al Baranda had previously housed the American Mission in the early 1930’s and the British Council in the late 1970’s.
Housed in a renovated 1930s residence, this museum traces the history – and prehistory – of Muscat through imaginative, interactive displays and exhibits. A ‘cut-and-paste’ dinosaur, using bones found in Al Khoud area of Muscat and topped up with borrowed bones from international collections, is worth a look. The ethnographic displays help set not just Muscat but the whole of Oman in a regional, commercial and cultural context. The ground floor of the museum is used as an exhibition space. It is hard to miss the charming ancient monument near the Mutrah Corniche. The distinctive old Portuguese house was home to the American Mission in the early 1930s and then the British Council in the late 1970s before finally being converted into the Bait Al Baranda museum in 2006.
The museum aimed to help people trace the history of Muscat through interactive displays and exhibits. It also hosted art shows, book launch functions, photography training sessions, and children’s art workshops, becoming a cultural hub in Muscat.
The director, Malik Al Hinai, served as a member of the Royal Guard as a soldier, as the marketing manager for Oman International Bank and then for Grand Hyatt, but it was his love for art that was at the heart of the Muscat Municipality’s well-placed faith.
“We began from scratch. The lessons learnt during my visits to renowned museums around the world came handy during various stages of Bait Al Baranda’s development. Nothing makes me happier than the success story of the museum. It has been going from strength to strength for the last nine years,” Malik said.
With Muscat Municipality giving him a free hand in administration, Malik has had been able to implement innovative plans.
“I thank the Muscat Municipality officials for giving me the freedom. They trusted me from the beginning and never interfered in my plans. They never turned down my proposals. It helped me think out of the box and make the place lively.”
“The most memorable day in my career was when Grand Mufti His Eminence Sheikh Ahmed Al Khalili visited the museum to inaugurate Turkish-German Calligraphy artist Mustafa Anlas’ exhibition in 2010. It was my idea to invite Grand Mufti as the works showcased 99 different names of Allah. My colleagues tried to dissuade me, but I persisted. I felt happy when I saw him leave the museum with a smile,” he said.In another example of Malik’s perseverance, a fan of the late Michael Jackson, he yearned for years to meet the legendary singer.
“He was my icon and I always wanted to meet him. Years later, I got the opportunity to meet him when he visited Times of Oman. That’s why I believe nothing is impossible in life.”
Malik is also known as a good art critique. “I don’t like every piece of art, and I look at works with a critic’s eye.” And he appreciates artists who are humble and know their limits. “I have a problem with the local artists who put a huge price tag on their works. Some of them work only for monetary purpose, and not for creative purpose.”
With Bait Al Baranda gearing up to celebrate its 10th anniversary next year, Malik hopes to see many changes at the museum.
“I would love to set up a small library to cater to the needs of children. Reading is on the wane. It is high time we inculcated the habit in them. I also wish to see a major revamp of the display items. Besides, I want to recreate the old Mutrah of 1950 in one of the rooms, where people can experience the sight and sounds.”
With passion, resoluteness, and an unwavering belief that nothing is impossible in life, Malik Al Hinai’s contributions continue to grow and ripple through Muscat, new and old.
Open from Saturday to Thursday, 9.00am to 1.00pm and 4.00pm to 6.00pm. Closed on Friday.

Muscat, Oman - Bait Al Zubair Museum (2020)

Bait Al Zubair is a museum, located on Al Saidiya Street, Old Muscat, Oman.

The museum has an extensive collection of ancient weapons, including khanjar, household equipments, and costumes (most of which derive from the owner's private collection). Outside the museum is a full-scale Omani village and souk.

Muscat (Arabic: مَسْقَط‎, Masqaṭ pronounced [ˈmasqatˤ]) is the capital and largest city of Oman. It is the seat of the Governorate of Muscat. According to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), the total population of Muscat Governorate reached 1.4 million as of September 2018. The metropolitan area spans approximately 3,500 km2 (1,400 sq mi) and includes six provinces called wilayats.[citation needed] Known since the early 1st century CE as an important trading port between the west and the east, Muscat was ruled by various indigenous tribes as well as foreign powers such as the Persians, the Portuguese Empire, the Iberian Union and the Ottoman Empire at various points in its history. A regional military power in the 18th century, Muscat's influence extended as far as East Africa and Zanzibar. As an important port-town in the Gulf of Oman, Muscat attracted foreign tradesmen and settlers such as the Persians and the Balochis. Since the ascension of Qaboos bin Said as Sultan of Oman in 1970, Muscat has experienced rapid infrastructural development that has led to the growth of a vibrant economy and a multi-ethnic society. Muscat is termed as a Global City.

The rocky Western Al Hajar Mountains dominate the landscape of Muscat. The city lies on the Arabian Sea along the Gulf of Oman and is in the proximity of the strategic Straits of Hormuz. Low-lying white buildings typify most of Muscat's urban landscape, while the port-district of Muttrah, with its corniche and harbour, form the north-eastern periphery of the city. Muscat's economy is dominated by trade, petroleum, liquified natural gas and porting.
