The Bosporus Strait is a natural strait and an internationally significant waterway located in Istanbul in northwestern Turkey that connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara. It forms part of the continental boundary between Asia and Europe, and divides Turkey by separating Anatolia from Thrace. It is the world's narrowest strait used for international navigation.
Most of the shores of the Bosporus Strait, except for the area to the north, are heavily settled, with the city of Istanbul's metropolitan population of 17 million inhabitants extending inland from both banks.
The Bosporus Strait and the Dardanelles Strait at the opposite end of the Sea of Marmara are together known as the Turkish Straits.
Sections of the shore of the Bosporus in Istanbul have been reinforced with concrete or rubble and those sections of the Strait prone to deposition are periodically dredged.

Understandable, with such an abundance of historical sightseeing spots in Istanbul and too little time to squeeze them all into your short holiday. But take my advice and set a few hours aside to take an unforgettable Bosphorus tour. Certainly if you’re in town between May and September. You won’t regret it — at least if you follow these simple guidelines.

Istanbul (2024) is the ancient city of Constantinople (Κωνσταντινούπολις) - city of Constantine - and the most beautiful city of Turkey and certainly one of the most impressive cities in the world. The city of Constantinople was the pearl of Byzantium untill it was conquered in 1453 by the Ottomans who made it the capital of the Ottoman Empire. The city remained powerful as it was strategically located at the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus which connected the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean to the Black Sea. The Ottomans named the city Konstantiniyye. Finally, the Turkish Republic, which was established in 1923 by Ataturk, renamed the city of Constantinople in Istanbul. However, Istanbul preserved its Greek origin as Is tin Pol(is)means 'To the City' in Greek. After WW I the city grew enormously and their population, although uncertain due to illegal immigration, blew up to approximately 16 million citizens.
Istanbul retained many ancient artifacts from its Greek-Hellenistic, Byzantine and Ottoman past, like the artifacts of the Hippodrome, the impressive Orthodox Cathedral of Agia Sofia, the city walls of Theodosios, the Chora Church, the small Agia Sofia church, the Topkapi and Dolmabahce palaces, the Yedikule Fortress and many hightlights more. Istanbul is also the only city in the world which is located on two continents: Europe and Asia.

The Bosporus , also known as the Strait of Istanbul (Turkish: İstanbul Boğazı, colloquially Boğaz), is a narrow, natural strait and an internationally significant waterway located in northwestern Turkey. It forms part of the continental boundary between Europe and Asia, and divides Turkey by separating Anatolia from Thrace. It is the world's narrowest strait used for international navigation. The Bosporus connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara, and, by extension via the Dardanelles, the Aegean and Mediterranean seas, and by the Kerch Strait, the sea of Azov.
Most of the shores of the strait, except for those in the north, are heavily settled, straddled by the city of Istanbul's metropolitan population of 17 million inhabitants extending inland from both coasts.
Together with the Dardanelles, the Bosporus forms the Turkish Straits.
The Bosphorus is the only way for Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Russia and Ukraine to reach the Mediterranean Sea and other seas. Sovereignty over the straits is also an important issue for the riparian countries besides Turkey.
Although it is only one of the natural borders separating the European and Asian mainland, the most known is the Bosphorus. Since it is a favorable region in terms of climate and geographical conditions, it has had a great role in being a settlement area for ages. The city of Istanbul, divided by the Bosphorus, is one of the few intercontinental cities in the world.
Even if Turkey has no right to receive tolls from ships passing through the strait Turkey's military has broad powers in accordance with Montreux Convention. Today, the Bosphorus Command is located on the shores of the Bosphorus and the military ships connected to the Command are anchoring in the Bosphorus waters.
Located on a peninsula at the intersection of the Black Sea, the Bosphorus and the Marmara Sea, Istanbul has been one of the most protected and hardest cities for centuries.

The Bosporus Strait is a natural strait and an internationally significant waterway located in Istanbul in northwestern Turkey that connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara. It forms part of the continental boundary between Asia and Europe, and divides Turkey by separating Anatolia from Thrace. It is the world's narrowest strait used for international navigation.
Most of the shores of the Bosporus Strait, except for the area to the north, are heavily settled, with the city of Istanbul's metropolitan population of 17 million inhabitants extending inland from both banks.
The Bosporus Strait and the Dardanelles Strait at the opposite end of the Sea of Marmara are together known as the Turkish Straits.
Sections of the shore of the Bosporus in Istanbul have been reinforced with concrete or rubble and those sections of the Strait prone to deposition are periodically dredged.
