Occupy Tower: Living in the world’s tallest slum - the Tower of David

x

Abandoned Office Tower In Caracas Has Become The World's Tallest Slum

El Torre de David, a towering 45-story skyscraper in the center of the Venezuelan capital of Caracas, is a towering monument to the country's crippling banking crisis and to the poverty experienced by the majority the city's population.
x

NAJWYŻSZE SLUMSY WenezuelI

Torre David, czyli Centro Financiero Confinanzas, jeszcze niedawno było najwyższymi slumsami świata. W roku 1990 David Brillembourg, prezes Confinanzas, postanowia zbudować w Caracas wieżowiec wyższy niż 40 pięter.
David umiera w roku 1993, a rok później z powodu kryzysu bankowego, budowa Torre David zostaje wstrzymana.
W 2007 wieżowiec zaczynają zamieszkiwać nielegalni lokatorzy. Zamieszkują oni w Torre David aż do 2015 roku, kiedy to rząd przesiedla ich do dzielnicy Zamora. W ostatnim roku w wieżowcu mieszka prawie 5 tyś. osób. Oprócz rozwiniętej przestępczości, w Torre David funkcjonowały sklepy, zakłady fryzjerskie, dentyści, prawnicy, itd.

Dzisiaj Torre David jest symbolem niepowodzenia Wenezueli, straconego potencjału i zaprzepaszczonych nadziei.

The Zabaleen: Cairo's Garbage Collectors (Part 2)

Garbage City - Cairo's dark and dirty underbelly. It's home to 50,000 Coptic Christians that make their living recycling the city's garbage. Why only Christians? Because they feed the organic waste to their pigs – and Muslims won’t touch pork.

You can learn a lot about a city from its trash. In Garbage City, they don’t just sort by garbage type, but also by brand. Among plastic bottle collectors, there’s an “American” pile.

• What one piece of garbage is sought by almost every collector?
• Cairo recycles over 85% of its garbage – more than any other city in the world. how did the Garbage People create such an efficient recycling system?
• Why was the swine flu so devastating to Cairo’s Garbage People – even though no pig ever tested positive in Egypt?

The Garbage People don’t just collect garbage – they remanufacture plastic forks into chairs and cans into shiny metal sheets.

But there is always one catastrophe away from starvation. First it was swine flu. Then the Egyptian government sold the garbage collection contract to foreign corporations. Lately China has stopped accepting recycled plastic.
When the Garbage People don’t work, Cairo’s streets overflow with waste.
But there is hope – and community. The Garbage People send their children to school, and dream of getting them out of garbage city. They've created a community with shops and cafes - they even have a mayor (unofficial). And they built themselves the world’s largest Coptic Christian Church – drilled out of a cave in the mountainside. More than anything, they are a strong community with deep family ties.
Many of Garbage City's residents would live there even if they didn't make their living off of trash.

This is my last video from Turkey, showing you another side of Istanbul but much more touristy since Istiklal Street and Taksim are the main parts of the city for tourism. I accidentally came across some hidden streets that I do not recommend you visit, especially at night!

ABANDONED SKYSCRAPER - Bangkok

Climbing the abandoned Sathorn Unique skyscraper in Bangkok, Thailand. Also called the Ghost Tower, locals say it's haunted... what do you think?

The Sathorn Unique skyscraper was supposed to become a premium luxury apartment complex until it was suddenly abandoned during Asia’s 1997 Financial Crisis. Left to rot in neglect, the unfinished skyscraper eventually became a home for drug addicts, homeless vagrants, and wild dogs.

A foreigner living in a slum? Yep.
Why!?

My whole reason for traveling in the first place, is to experience culture. I have learned that the further you get away from the 'tourist spots', the more authentic that culture is.

So, I traveled off of the beaten path, a bit, and went to a slum. Sure, it's only on the outskirts of the city/town of Puerto Princesa - but it made a world of difference.

Over the next couple of weeks, I will show you bits and piece of my journey as I was inside this slum/squatters area.

Who put the biggest bra in the Middle East on a famous Tel Aviv (Israel) statue?

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness month, one of Tel Aviv's most famous statues, the discs in Habima Square, have been decked out in a giant pink bra. The artists who created the biggest bra in the Middle East say: 'As two nutcases who love challenges in the street and in all shapes and sizes, we said – of course it's possible.'The famous statue in Tel Aviv's Habima Square has a new feature: An enormous pink brassiere, with each cup measuring five meters across. The garment will temporarily grace Moshe Kadishman's work in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

The stunt is the initiative of the non-profit organization One out of Nine, which works to call on all women aged 30 and above to go and get checked for breast cancer. The new statue has generated much interest from passers-by, who stop and photograph the installation.

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.

Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.

In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)

Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.
